Carly Elisabeth Simon (born June 25, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and children's author. She first rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of hit records; her 13 Top 40 U.S. hits include "Anticipation", "Haven't Got Time for the Pain", "You Belong to Me", "Coming Around Again", and her four Gold-certified singles "You're So Vain", "Mockingbird", "Nobody Does It Better" from the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, and "Jesse"
In 1982, she sang the Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards-produced single "Why", from the soundtrack to the film Soup for One. It was a top ten hit in the U.K., and successful throughout Europe.[71] Although "Why" stalled at No. 74 in the U.S., the song became a mellow classic in the aftermath of its being picked up to be covered and sampled by different artists from around 1989 onward
Nile Rodgers and bernard Edwards were a combo made in heaven. Their playing was tight!
Bernard Edwards is criminally underrated as a bassist. Perhaps the best who ever lived.
absolutely definitely honestly this piece of work 🎶❤for me it's genius 🎉🎉😊
Chic all over it with their signature sound! This song was also recorded while Carly Simon was going through a divorce.
Ironically, some of the best stuff come from people going through a divorce.
@@56postoffice And then there's Robin Thicke...
Thats an equal mix of NYC late 70s Chic and early 80s NYC underground Paradise Garage/Larry Levan production especially the drums/fx/dub reggae.
Don't remind me. @@spht9ng
You can kinda tell. This still sounds fresh though.
The best post-disco beat of 1982.
Sounds halfway to dancehall, very unique song
Carly Simon has one of the sexiest singing voices in music history. I will fight anyone who disagrees. I'll likely lose, but it won't make me any less right.
I was just starting high school when this came out..I,m 54 now had loads of Girlfriends and been Married and I never truly loved any of them..Still I live in hope that maybe one day I will experience what true love is 🤦🏻♂️🙏
I'm 33 and I had it 2 times. I really hope you find it one day. It's the greatest of all feelings
Sampled by the great rap band A Tribe Called Quest Bonita Applebum
Said you gotta turn me awn

Remember hearing this at Shoom in 1988 6 years or so after it's release and the ecstasy crowd fucking loved it,it fit perfectly with the second summer of love vibe in London that year. Noooice.
damn right - i was in some DIY gig in Nottingham - all pilled up DJ dropped he 12" - heaven....
fookin tune back in the wharehouse parties in Blackburn great times great tunes
big hacienda track as well
I heard this pitched up to about +4 in the back room at House Of God about 98 and had no idea at the time who or what it was. Blown away when I found out its Carly Simon
This is one of those occasions where the saying “this song sounds like it could come out today” is an incredibly valid one.
Used to play this at the end of raves back in the day. Great days.
I heard it for d first time after a rave in Croatia
And idiots thought it was a new record back then in 1989 (before the Internet) LOL! Yes I remember, Boys' Own twats. The song came out in '82
Nile Rodgers the hit master at it again!
Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards GOLD! A bonafide Balearic Ibiza CLASSIC #thechicorganization
The bass, keyboard and melody makes this track 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ingenious musicians, the reversed arrangements are pure art
The staggered handclaps are perfect
The bass on this is sublime. The rest of the song aint half bad either
HAHAHA (coming from a bassist, on his way to learn the track)
Yeah, of course-don’t you know who produced this? Nile Rodgers was producing records for everyone at this time.
Have you ever heard the bass line on a song called “good times” by Chic, aka “rappers delight”? Or Chic “everybody dance”? How about “Let’s dance” David Bowie? Or Madonna “like a virgin” and “material girl”? Diana Ross “I’m coming up?”
Yeah, all the same guy. R.I.P Bernard Edwards, one of the all time great bass players.
@@79Glitch Yep knew Nile Rodgers had his prints ALL over this what a talent
This was a massive dance floor hit in Majorca 1982
Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers , The Chic Organisation……
Why do I need to say anything more
🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Brilliant
The bass and guitar are fabulous.
Nile & Bernard🙏
I was apathetic to this song initially, but it really grows on you in a hypnotic way. Chic had to give away great songs to other artists once the "Disco sucks" movement started.
Never understood the generalization with the "disco sucks" movement actually. Alot of great songs even in other genres were heavily influenced by disco, synthpop, discotech or have roots from them.
Loved it from the moment I heard it in ' October 82
All the 'disco sucks' movement did was help create house music, so I'm phenomenally grateful for it.
they're genius
Lyrically, “Why” (1982) finds Carly Simon asking her ex why he treated her badly. Any kind of communication between them inevitably fails : all they hear when the other one speaks is “Ladidadida,” a line repeated four times to build the chorus. This is quite a departure for Miss Simon, an outstanding wordsmith known for finding just the right words (instead of onomatopoeias), but it’s not out of character for songwriters Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who would focus on the groove.
Rogers and Edward originally penned “Why” for the 1982 sex comedy film “Soup For One” - a flop❕- for which they did the soundtrack. 💙❓💚
Carly did a lot of great songs over the years. This is just one of them.
absolutely.
SUNRISE! IBIZA ! 1988 ! CHILLING OUT ! BIG GRIN!😍
Loves it
can you believe she was 37 in the video of her dance/walking down the street.... she looks 18
Carly Simon done a James Bond theme song (Nobody Does It Better)
Won an Oscar for the theme song for the film "Working Girl" (Let The River Run)
But this song is her greatest song EVER!!! Which also happens to be for a film (Soup For One) Thank you Nile, Bernard and Carly for this masterpiece
Nile Rodgers pop genius
The kind of tune that makes me yearn for my next DJ gig just to share that beautiful vibe with strangers
you're blessed. I play stuff like this and normies show up asking me to play "music people know". I quit DJing at venues because I had too many people complain about 80s boogie-funk, roots, disco, etc. I played parties at my own house on a massive system for a while after that but never got back into it publicly. Spent the last 13 or so years recording mixes at home to listen to when i drive/work/clean
Here in 2021, still bumping it..🔥🔥
2024 update
wild reggae funk hybrid that sounds perfectly natural
Always liked this song but that Bernard Edwards bassline sealed the deal for me

Pickering used to drop this at The Hacienda.

Je dirais même plus : merveille absolue !!
Je dirais même plus: merveille absolue!
Chic Prodution 👍🎸✌️
Why are there ads during the damn song....
Bass riff is all time
Essa música é realmente linda!!!❤❤❤❤❤✔👏👏👏👏👏👍🥇
When I’m dying I think this will be my last neuro play .
Why does TH-cam insist on playing ads in the middle of songs... seriously erodes the platform's use for music playback
I use Opera browser on my desktop and it blocks all ads on YT. I do not log in to YT. I watch and listen to all without ads. Also 4k downloader lets you d/l 30 YT vids a day without buying. YT used to drive me mad but now it is all good.
Golden! thanks for sharing this gemme
God knows why ❤
Maravilhoso!
An ad in the middle of the tune = Massive eff off !
Impresionante. Zarpada versión. De aquí a la eternidad!.

Imagine, if you will, a square. The corners of the square are 'having no cocaine', 'having no weed', 'having no alcohol', and 'having no money'.
That square is Hell's Square. And I'm lost within it somewhere.
