I gave it a thumbs up. Recently purchased a 2010 civic. I like the video as all I wanted to know was the basic stuff. Where's the drain plug and filter. I really liked the comments. Exactly how to do it right from the folks who commented, so good. Thanks everyone!
You checked the oil level before filling up the oil filter. You should check oil after running, checking for leaks. It will probably need a little more. With a vertical oil filter such as this one I always fill the filter before installing, this provides oil pressure right away so you don't have to wait for oil pressure to build.
Just did it today with help from a friend who’s done it to his own cars . We lifted the civic from two sides using two jacks, and were able to get on our backs under the car; to be able to screw the filter off by hand and use a wrench for the oil pan. Took us about 45min more or less. Good luck! My civic is non Si so owners manual said 3.9 quarts as the civic in the video. Check the manual for your car. I believe for Si models it said 4. Something I think 4.5 quarts.
+Its Rafael Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
According to the manual: You have to warm the engine first , then drain, install bolt with new washer and tighten to 29 ft pounds, remove filter, check that the o ring is not on the pan, clean the mating surface of the filter, then put new oil on the o ring, and hand tighten the filter until the o ring sits on the seat. then do 3/4 turn then tighten to 8.7 ft pounds, then put the new oil 3.9 us quarts with the filter and 3.7 us quarts with out filter. keep the car lifted and turn it on for at least 3 min, then check for leaks. then turn the car off. to reset the maitenence light: turn igntion to on (2) press and release the select/reset buton after 10 seconds. the display will flash then press for another 5 seconds and the display will say 100% oil life
I was surprised they didn't include the maintenance reminder reset. It's in the manual, but would be much faster to watch on this A1 video.
i didn't see a new washer... but hey it works
Many times, the same washer can be used 2-3 times before they need replacing. As long as they are not mis-figured or crushed.
@@carlovanrijk4039 been using mine over 6 times no crushes 😆 some people go as far as changing the whole thing not just the washer
As I have found with all 1A Auto videos, this presentation is easy to see and understand. Bravo!
+Jeff G Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Jeff G, agreed!! All of the 1A videos I’ve seen have been easy to follow, well explained, and good camera/mic work!
Good video, but...
Before draining oil, loosen but do not completely remove fill cap. This prevents vacuum while reduces chances of debris entering the engine.
Use a new washer when putting the drain bolt back in.
Torque drain bolt to 29lb-ft.
Fill new filter with clean oil before putting it on.
Thread on new filter by hand, 3/4 turn after contact.
ALSO, since most of us can't justify investing in a TPO lift...
If you haven't already, invest in some chocks, jack stands, and a 3-ton floor jack.
Locate the pinch welds behind the front wheel wells and in front of the rear wheel wells. These are where the jack stands will support the car. Locate the front jack point on the middle of the cross beam of the frame. It's marked by an arrow stamped into the plastic. Or if you only need to jack one side of the front, either of the front tow loops will work as jack points. The rear tow loop is the rear jack point.
Make sure the car is on solid pavement. Set the park brake and chock the back wheels, because when it comes to safety 2=1=0. Set jack stands at each wheel. Jack up the front and set the front stands under the pinch welds. Jack up the back and set the rear stands at height equal to the front. NEVER get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. ALWAYS use jack stands. Unless of course you're insured and will leave your widow a nice settlement.
+dhtsoaeds dhtnadi We appreciate the feedback. Sometimes there are multiple ways to accomplish the same repair.
Yes to everything buuuuuut you don't need to prefill the filter, that's just a common myth. Some companies actually specifically advise against prefilling so it's better to just not do it and let the car do it by itself.
Awesome video.. Do I have to change the o-ring of the bolt drain each time I change the oil?
Yeah you should. The aluminum crushed to create a seal between the bolt and pan. Honda dealerships sell them for like $0.43 each, or I think there’s a 20 pack for like $8 on Amazon
2 points. Remove the oil cap for easier draining and always use a new washer on the drain plug. Be better 1A Auto.
That what I’m looking for . Very informative content . Thanks so much 👍👍✅
I usually loosen the oil cap before I drain the oil
It’s still fine id rather do Oil filter before doing oil drain plug because it prevents you getting oil on the oil filter and not getting oil on the oil filter because it’ll make it slip and hard to get off
Can I use windshield washer fluid mixed into the oil to help keep the engine clean?
+David That is not recommended to mix oil with windshield washer fluid.
I have a 2007 Civic with 228k on it. Should I use conventional, full synthetic, or high mileage synthetic?
Should a new crush washer be used on the drain pan plug?
Yep, Honda dealers should sell them for ~$0.4 each, or anywhere else. I know there’s a 20 pack on Amazon for $20 I believe
What oil brand is better for an Honda civic 8th gen? I just bought Quaker State Racing 10w30 (my manual recommend 10w30) (has the API seal). But if you say "don't use QS, use xxx brand. I'll be buy it.
Hugo Roberto Soler G… I have a ‘16 Honda Civic. It uses a 0W - 20 oil, but I have used the Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic oil for 7K mile oci. Sent a sample off to Blackstone Labs - the report came back saying the oil held up well, low wear metals, and enough additive package remaining to run it out to 10K miles (I do 90%+ hwy miles). The Quaker State is a good oil!
A great video. Thankyou for doing this. Just did my civic 09 in Melbourne. I always remove the oil cap before draining the oil. Reason why u did it in this order?
Is this the same for a 2009 manual transmission civic si?
Will 3 in 1 oil work instead?
May i know the size of oil filter wrench?
2009 civic ex sedan Requires 13mm socket_
Everything else, is Spot on
Hate that Civic dipstick, hard to see the oil level at times.
Thanks for the video!
is there enough room to remove the filter by hand without a filter wrench?
+smdanny1 Thanks for watching! There is not a lot of clearance for the filter, so you will be better off using a wrench like in the video. 1aauto.com
I know I’m 9months late, but with the help of a friend we lifted up the civic and we were able to Screw the filter off by hand.
Not very hard , but like 1A Auto says there’s not much clearence.. but definitely pretty easy for a 2 person job. Good luck anyone reading!
@@Rafaellasvegas its honestly bad location for the damn filter its mad hard to get out on mine the damn mechanic tightend it way to much and i dont have the damn socket and all the auto zones closed and its night now 🤣what a day
@@ja4182 better late than never, but for anyone reading this in the future you can wrap ductape around the filter and use that as leverage to get it off. You can also just stab a screwdriver or two into the filter to get some leverage on it but you WILL get oil all over everything by doing so lol. Works in a pinch though 👍
You're supposed to run the car before checking the oil. If you don't, it'll read over filled because the filter is still empty.
No plastic shield with clips or bolts?
The newer Hondas, yes. But this one, nope.
thank you so much very good video
Is it 17 or 19 mm
Excuse me, how many quarts of oil does the 2008 Honda Civic have?
+Ney Rodríguez Thanks for checking us out! The capacity of this vehicle is just shy of 4 quarts.
This same engine is in my 2008 CRV 2.0 petrol.
Shame you didn’t use a torque wrench.
It’d be nice if they said which type of motor oil and filter is needed
I put the oil in where the orange stick is. Is that bad?
Yes ur car will blow up
Bro
On my car it takes 3.9 but after putting 3.9 it just touches the dipstick (without starting it).
I don’t know if someone asked this before but is using 5w20 honda genuine oil bad if the engine has 5w20 regular oil thanks for the feedback
+Crazyleaf 4358 Thank you for your question! You will want to use the same oil that is on the oil cap and in the manual.
oil cap should be removed before draining for efficient and faster drain and no need for brake cleaner ...
+Johny Hansen Thanks for the feedback!
Wow great video! So excited! Amazing! Love! Keep doing what you do! 🥰🥵❤️💓
I just tried this but I cannot get the fkn bolt off even with a breaker bar after putting the car on 2 jack stands. I think I'm too bloody weak. They make it look so easy cause they have a lift lol.
Thank you!
No mention of the proper filter to be used, or did I miss it?
Appreciate the video but you should edit it because the info is wrong. The drain plug requires a 19MM wrench to be loosened.
+MexicanGeorgeLucas 954 Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Cool. So what if a filter wrench doesn't fit and somehow if won't come off.... Even tho I put it on last time... 🖕😅
Thanks.
+Don Gertan Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
And to think all of my local shops are charging $80+ for this...
Edit: How do I reset the car's oil life meter?
Oil type
Looks hard.
+BEAVIS Thank you for your feedback!
@@1AAuto lol I was just being sarcastic. I didn't know however about the 2nd position to open the hood. Thanks.
Not really
this is not 2005 civic
This is 2006-2011 not 2005
This civic takes 4.5 quart of oil and you check oiL when filter is empty
17 mm is not the size thanks a lot
Could you let us know which one it is?
@@gglvchucho4810 better late than never but it's a 19mm I believe
My civic is 17mm. I think some might be 19mm. Just buy 2 sockets/box wrenches
that civic is rusty and corroded as hell
Is this sarcasm? Come to Britain and take a look under our cars. I'm amazed how good the one in this video is, considering its age
Weird looking 98 civic!
