    I've got a 1992 that has been in the family since my dad drove it off the showroom floor. I inherited it when he passed so it has tremendous sentimental value - and only 110k miles on it... When that Toyota engine gives out - you'll likely be getting another one to play with! Great work, great video, kinda makes me want to stop doing oil changes to expedite the conversation.

      I agree. I actually would like to see classic cars being converted. It keeps the looks, but its electric. You can even get better performance once graphene batteries and things like it get to mainstream consumers. Yeah, there isn't a classic big block V8, but it would still be cool.

    Michael,
    Excellent build and an excellent plug for the AC-50 HPEVS system. I think many have the idea that the AC-50 is not really suitable for the heavier vehicles and pretty much only for the VW type kit car platform. Nice to see it really can do well in other vehicles. Looks nice and clean.

      Coincidentally I was also watching MCM when I searched this video, but for a completely unrelated reason.
      I was watching their turbo Mercedes episode where they were making diesel fuel from waste oils and I thought to myself, that'll be a great way to keep my car on the road after they stop selling fuel, but my MR2 isn't diesel and I figured, if I'm going to convert my MR2 to an alternative power source, rather than diesel, why not electric? And so here I am.

  • @Clesarie
    @Clesarie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    So im a little confused. I literally just started doing research on these and it seems like they have to be manual transmisions. I always thought electric was always 1 gear. If you get to still shift and its electric im way more excited. My issue is how do you know when to shift or why?
    Also what kinda power is this making in terms of conversation to WHP?

    • @omardude39
      @omardude39 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Clesarie It's still geared because the MR2 was originally geared, but in reality you wouldn't need to shift much at all - you would just put in in 3rd or 5th and leave it there, and not touch the clutch pedal because the motor doesn't need to idle like an engine when the car is stationary.
      You can shift if you want to, but the only time there is any point is if you need ridiculously high torque and are willing to sacrifice top speed by using a low gear.

    • @DennisSantos
      @DennisSantos 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Omar Smith But wouldn't launching in 2nd or 3rd gear put too much strain on that stock gearbox? Does the owner shift at all? Or just leaves it on a middle gear?

    • @omardude39
      @omardude39 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dennis Santos the gearbox is designed to handle the stress of starting from stationary, the gear being used doesn't have much bearing on this in an electric application. In a normal engine, too high a gear would stall the engine because it can't produce the torque (turning force) being required of it at low speed, but as electric motors can output their full torque strength regardless of what speed they are running at, this is not an issue.
      Of course, there are limits to the torque you can put through the stock gearbox - the same goes for the drive shaft and clutch, if you install a more powerful motor than the original engine was and accelerate flat out, you could bust the clutch or twist the drive shaft, but a correctly matched motor won't damage the gearbox.

    • @DennisSantos
      @DennisSantos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omar Smith Yes, of course. But what I'm wondering is if the maximum torque permitted on second, third or higher gears is less than first. As you said, a gas engine would likely stall, trying to pull away in those gears, so I'm guessing that OEM manufacturers factor that into gearbox design based on weight and cost vs material strength, even gearwheel location on the shafts/layshafts. Since an electric motor produces maximum torque at 0 rpm, isn't it more likely to overload a second or third gear by launching in those?
      This may be completely out of context but on multi speed bicycles it isn't recommended that the rider selects the lowest "granny" gear up front and the smaller(est) sprockets on the wheel hub at the same time, so as to avoid overloading the drivetrain (in addition to severely crossing the chain).

    Just in case anyone is curious how much this conversion would cost in parts alone, I found that EV West offers a conversion kit for $6,988 (plus a battery system, including cables, fuses, and contactor box). My guess is the battery system will run another $10,000 so you are talking around $17,000 for the conversion.

  • @Prophes0r
    @Prophes0r 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So you take a mid engine car because of the mass distribution. Then mount a (much) lighter motor in the engine bay. And then add all the battery mass OUTSIDE the axles?
    Being 50/50 looks nice on paper but that battery placement cannot work favorably compared to putting them down the center-line, between the axles.

    What kind of improvement have you been getting with the water jacket sink for the Curtis controller? I have been looking at a few and thermal damage seems to be a common problem. I suspect it was to do with the way they have the through board thermal plane on the fets and heat soak inside the case. It would be who of Curtis to have a water cooling jacket mount to the other side of the fet boards, thermally isolating the output stage, and providing addition noise shielding for the controller board. There are like 96 fets on the 3 phase output drive between two different pcbs, as well as a control board and a power conditioning board all stacked into that case. I am guessing that dc converter is just a 12v buck converter for the car? Quite interesting work over there. You guys needing an ex nuke em EE anytime in the future? Keep up the good work!

    I took a good look of this setup, even if both cars have significant differences, but in size are pretty much the same.
    In another way after removing of extras none necessary to the conversion, I will end up with a lot more space than the MR2.
    My intentions are buit something in at least a 200 mile range, and if possible with a little kick on the take of.

    They could be using a variable frequency drive to control the battery to ac power and the speed of the motor. That is the way most new heating a ventilation system now are designed. A VFD works by converting ac to Dc and then chopping the DC voltage to the ac frequency needed. In a battery powered car they just chop the dc power.

      I think more than if you buy brand new electric car like nissan leaf.

      You can build your own car using the batteries from these other cars. A guy already has a crashed Tesla, he is going to turn his Double VW Van which is two vans put together into an electric vehicle using all the Tesla parts.

      @MB031 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TekReview's Yeah,how often you get crashed tesla $100K car??! It is still very expensive to convert any car to EV and you end up with old car..

      Go to EVTV and learn. Conversion sometimes is cheaper then an OEM car.

      I would say probably even worse than original due to the fact half the batteries are behind the prayer wheels now. Probably handles much like the older rear engine 911.
      But still a cool project.
