    Log Jammers was AWESOME. You could ride it at night enjoying the water theme while not getting that wet. Haha, I really miss it.

      It was typically the first ride I used to visit first. If I could, I would ride it again before at dusk, when there was just enough sunlight left. It was a totally different feeling than riding it during the day or at night.

      @Jennifer Yeah, it looks like one of the weaker RMC's. Only way I could see that not being true is if it's warmed up and actually synced and dueling properly.

  • @leejohnson179

    I remember so many of these rides well, a few I don't remember at all (and probably never saw), and then quite a lot of these I remember now but I had forgotten until I watched this -- so for this last category thank you for this video! The only moment here that was a dagger in my heart was when you said "Thank God" after saying the Log Jammer was torn down! Yes, I love Full Throttle, but the Log Jammer was great! I had a tradition that it always had to be my first ride when I got to the park. Also, Mountain Express was a wildcat coaster that really packed a punch, actually, and I used to marathon it at night when the ride ops would allow repeat rides.

    I started working at Magic Mountain in 1998. I started at Granny's Grand Prix/ Sierra twist.
    I was on Tidal Wave/spinout crew the last day it operated. A kid had cracked his head on the fire sprinkler feed pipe after he climbed the side wall. After he hit the operator hit the EStop trapping everyone inside. Far as I know aside from the times they had me come back to operate the ride for six flags laweres that was it for old spin out.

    I was a loader on psyclone way back in the day. I remember one night we had some riders going on near closing. We nearly didn't get enough people to get on the ride. I had to go on the ride after checking each lap bar then my own to have the last riders have a go before closing.

  • @bruce2357
    @bruce2357 7 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    I remember most of these rides.
    I first visited Magic Mountain when I was 9 years old in 1971 and went there probably every year through the 70's and a little less often through the 80's.
    I haven't been back since 1991.
    Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it was quite nostalgic for me.

    • @mlbslugger62
      @mlbslugger62 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we went back once since the 70s but it lost all its nostalgia. Did not enjoy it because it wasnt Magic Mountain anymore. Can go anywhere for a park full of roller coasters. Perhaps being from Anaheim had something to do with it, but in the 70s it was my favorite park!

    • @MelieneGardner
      @MelieneGardner 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I came in slightly later, but only slightly. It was my favorite park as an older kid & teenager in the 80's through to very early 90's. I went back once around 2001 or so, and again a couple of years ago around 2016 or 17. I really missed rides like Spinout (my friends and I would ride it on loop for HOURS till someone would throw up & they'd have to close temporarily). I remember riding most of the rides on this list at least once - I even got to experience Thrill Shot once. Psyclone was always awful.
      However, a lot of the rides from that era that are still there have really not aged well. Ninja and Viper are painful to ride now. But, there is also a newer ride called Tatsu that is wonderful & is now my favorite coaster ever.
      I agree with the nostalgia factor and this video. But, if you have a chance, do consider going back again.

    Thank you for a great 'ride' down memory lane! Having grown up in Valencia, I started going to the park in it's first year, I plan on taking my grandkids like I took my kids. I absolutely love rollercoasters and really enjoyed 'dejavu', gonna miss that. The 'Colossus ', yet to try out the new version, but hope to soon. So many of the rides you named were such integral parts of my childhood, so much so that I have been bringing my family back for years. I really enjoyed the look back!!

    I'm disappointed that Magic Pagoda is not on this list. I remember being a kid and being in awe of some of the effects in that attraction. It's frustrating that there is not much on the internet about it

    • @neferazure
      @neferazure 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Magic Pagoda is still in the park but only gets used during Fright Fest now as a maze. So it's not considered "gone" since the building is still there and it still does get some seasonal use. Head to SFMM during Fright Fest season and you can walk through it once more and experience nostalgia.

      I believe there was a period of time when one lane ran the coaster backwards and the other lane ran the coaster forwards; you got to choose which lane at the front of the line. Originally both lanes ran the coasters forward and at the same time, simulating a race.

    Very interesting video. There were a lot of rides I'd never heard of, but it still brings back a lot of memories. My first time going to Magic Mountain was in 2002 for 8th grade grad night and we decided to run to the back of the park as soon as we got in to beat the lines. We ended running straight to Deja Vu for some reason, but it instantly became one of my favorite rides at the park. After that I started going to magic mountain 4-5 times a year, but I only managed to ride Deja Vu maybe 2 times a year, as it was closed down often for one problem or another. I really miss that ride... I never had any problems with it being too rough.

    I liked Log Jammer for its length and how it went so high up the side of the mountain (oh, hi Gold Rusher!). At one time in the 70s they seemed to have a plan of placing similar rides at opposite sides of the park: Log Jammer/Jet Stream; Gold Rusher/Mountain Express; Swiss Twist/Himalaya; Spin Out/Electric Rainbow; Big Bloop Bounce/Teen Tank.

    Old schooler here-worked at MM during high school (83-85/ride ops)...Grand Centennial Excursion closed in 84...the clip you have is from the early years...I worked the last two years on GCE (83-84)...we drove an actual diesel switcher with a throttle and air brakes (it was dark green and the real deal)...we had these cool black conductors outfits, hats, and old style Col. Sanders bow ties...too cool...checked out all the hot babes (guests and employees)...then broomball in the valley after the park closed...people would freak out to know how many employees far from sober when working there...it was just one big party all summer...

      They need to build a new log ride there. If I were in charge I would build it either in place of the never busy Whistlestop Park and make it part of a Bugs Bunny World extension or build it in place of or around the Golden Bear Theatre. Rumor has it that Tidal Wave could be on the chopping block for the next coaster project (I would not much miss Tidal Wave) and this park can use a good new water ride.

    I think it’s safe to say most of the rides that have left the park have found homes in vacant lots, the park still needs to take that final step in deciding, are we a hill top carnival or coaster mountain of fun. I can’t imagine driving 2 hours to play a squirt gun game!

    When Six Flags Over Texas received the bobsled ride it wasn't yet known as La Vibora… it was actually called The Avalanche Bobsled and was a white color scheme the same as it was in Magic Mountain. It wasn't changed to La Vibora until sometime in the 90s, when the area received a major theming overhaul and it was fully integrated to the Mexico country motif that the area was decorated in.

    The original Colossus was my very first roller coaster. I was six years old and my aunt and two uncles took me on the ride. It only had a lap restraint, so I kept coming up off the seat and my aunt had to hold me down. I was so scared that I made them stop the kiddy coaster I rode later that day and let me off. I never rode another coaster again until I was a teenager and that was the viper. Eventually, the Ninja became my favorite coaster. I'm not as much into G-force as I am speed and maneuvers. Great Video!

    If you want to see what happened to many of the gondolas from the Galaxy, google “Eloy AZ Family World Adventures.” Basically it was a failed, never-completed park that had the gondolas as “giant birdcage” decorations on poles around the property, alongside the 10 freeway. There was going to be an animal safari park, a water park, and an amphitheater, but it fell through soon after construction started, but the Galaxy’s gondolas remained on the poles.

    I only recall a few of these former rides, but seriously, FreeFall should have stayed or at least something else other than that paralyzing Green Lantern ride -- never again. And although Cyclone was a rib and head bruising woodie, it still gave you a spook thinking you'd fly off the track. I'm just glad Six Flags never closed down the park back when it was a possibility. Can't wait for my next trip.

    It was cool to see what the rides were named at SF Magic Mountain - I could tell which ones we had in Georgia, but were painted differently and or had different names. Flashback was called Z-Force in Atlanta, the freefall ride you showed was called "FreeFall" here. lol. I worked at Six Flags two years in high school and I worked on that ride a few times. I didn't have any money to eat lunch one day and I probably wasn't supposed to, but I collected the change in the back of the seats and was able to buy a sandwich at the canteen!

    In regards to Deja Vu, I’m glad it’s gone, especially after what they just mentioned. Every time I rode this, it’s like it nearly takes me out to the point where I can barely manage to get on other rides.
    Also, my brother had a near medical catastrophe when the ride stalled on its initial descent, keeping him and his gf stuck there for a few hours in the summer (those that know are familiar with the weather in that area).

    Incorrect on Psyclone. As a former operator of that ride, it ran two trains through most of the summer months and actually got some healthy lines at times... had a lot of fun running that ride, actually. Rode it well over 2,000 times and also held a record for most times in a row.

    Psychlone was my first real roller coaster ride. Its lack of loops made it easy to coerce me to get on, but boy was it thrilling. But its what helped me get enough courage to ride some of the other roller coasters. Flashback, Colossus, Ninja, and then ultimately I had enough courage to ride Viper. All in the same night in 1996! Scarily enough, just a few days earlier, there was a death on Revolution, so that ride was closed and I never got to go on it.

    Spin out definitely needs to come back, I remember the changes in safety. First came the "no upside down" then the whole bottom stopped dropping down, unless it was just half broken every time I went. I knew it was in trouble but it was seriously one of the best little things to do there. Especially because it was next to the goldminer... Or whatever the first coaster there was, which is also a great little ride.

    • @neferazure
      @neferazure 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've heard firsthand from park staff (Former employee, 2007-2008), that the reason for Freefall's removal was due to metal fatigue along the bottom part of Freefall's rails where the track curved. It wasn't visible with the naked eye but when they scanned it with whatever it is they use to see inside metal beams apparently there were micro fractures and apparently it wasn't considered cost-effective to repair the damage. Fun fact though, the metal tower that Freefall's sign was mounted on (If anyone has a photo of the entrance sign for Freefall please share it, I can't find it anywhere on the internet), is still standing between the exit bridge for splashdown and the exit line for Riddlers.

    • @neferazure
      @neferazure 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They removed it simply because after Superman came out (which was an updated version of the same ride, and even by the same manufacturer, Intamin), there was no point having two rides so similar in the park. Superman pretty much made Freefall irrelevant. That was the reason it was removed. It actually sat abandoned for a small amount of time because people stopped riding it when Superman came out, and it became an eyesore sitting in the middle of Riddler's Revenge at the time. So ultimately it made no sense to keep both Superman and Freefall in the park at the same time, they got rid of the one with lower ridership.
