  • Welcome back! In this Native American flute review, I'll play this deep bass A flute by Mad Max Flutes. Max and his wife, Karen are great folks that live in the Phoenix Valley. Max has been making flutes for some time now, and you can view more of his wonderful flutes by visiting him online below.
    One thing that I love about this bass Native American flute is the mouthpiece-something that we're starting to see a lot more of in our industry.
    Many use the Native American flute for meditation, especially big, deep flutes like this.

    I bought this flute. Just arrived today. Oh man this flute is awesome. I have two flutes from High Spirit Flutes, which I also love. I’ve been playing in since I received it. 😁 I’m in love with this flute. Thank you Jonny!

    Mad Max's EZ Reach flutes are very nice. I got my "A" at Flute Quest when I had met YOU! It looks almost the same as yours. I've never had any issues with watering out with mine.....and each one is slightly different in tonality. Mine has a much cleaner and clear voice. I also agree with your comments on his more traditional designs...they are boldly voiced. A great flute for playing outdoors without an amp!

    Audio great today. Wonderful flute I would buy it just to look at it. A piece of art. I hope you put those colored lights in the flute room.

    I have a contra bass F# flute by the late Stephen DeRuby that has a very similar mouthpiece. Very nice, as always. Thanks for sharing! One thing about the fixed blocks: you can take a folded piece of paper the width of the slot (or a bit less) and work it in and out to help dry/clean the air passage.

    Great review Jonny, as always. This style of flute is a great option for those without the reach who want to play a bass flute, providing they note the caveats you covered. Personally, I'll stick with the standard style where you can move the block, thankfully I've got larger hands so reach is not an issue. I find myself using the block to fine tune flutes all the time, even has a less experienced player, and I'm not willing to give that up. I do have one of the High Spirits nova flutes in this style, so my preference is based upon experiences with that flute. My hats off to Mad Max and all of the flute makers who are doing all they can to get bigger flutes in smaller people's hands, and this design certainly does that very well!

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. To all, their own preferences. Another option out of many. Thanks for tuning in!

    Thanks for this oneJonny ,had my Madmax Ez A flute for a year now I love it .
    Took time for me to work with it to get mellowed sound once I did it was immediately on my go to for Latin , Jazz and Blues do to it’s raspy voice. this flute can be played a long time before wetting out and if it does a shot of Can air clears it out and I keep playing . Don’t know if Canned Air is recommended so be cautious.
    Many thanks Jonny.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure! Others have mentioned the canned air method of drying the flute quickly. As you mentioned, caution is indicated here.

    My feeling about this low A flute, just from looking at it, is that the length of the vibrating air column, or the sound chamber of the flute looks mighty short for a low A flute. My idea is maybe that he made the bore diameter super wide so he could make the length of the vibrating air column shorter - and therefore, the finger holes more reachable. How does this low A flute compare with other low A flutes in your collection regarding both the bore diameter as well as the length of the sound chamber?

    I am guessing that Mad Max Flutes is no longer in business, because nothing on the website looks to be updated since 2021. Too bad, this EZ Play Bass flute seems like it is really good quality.

    Just a few questions I'd like to ask you here, Jonny: 1) What is the bore diameter on that flute? It looks pretty wide. 2) This flute does not have a slow air chamber. In your opinion, is there any solid positive value or reason for having a slow air chamber?

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The addition of a SAC allows for fine tuning of the flute's voice by the player in moving the block slightly forward or back. Also, this design gives flute makers more options for creating a voice for their own brand of flute by adjusting dimensions in the depth, width, length and ramp inside the SAC and on the block itself. Also, the player can expedite drying the flute by taking the block off and physically wiping down the flue and the block, where the other is a little harder and maybe just better to wait for it to dry on its own.

      @@JonnyLipford Thank you for your answer. But I'm not complaining about the content (the scale sheet) nor am I talking about the link to your website where you ask for an subcription in exchange for the sheet. I'm talking about the email I got about the sheet. It did not contain a PDF, but only links to dubious relinking services. If you are not sure what I am talking about then there is a very high chance that this relinking service is taking advantage of you and your fans. There is no need to go through these services. You can just upload the PDF to your website and either display it there openly or - if you only want to trade it for email addresses and subscriptions - replace those links in the email with actual direct links to the PDF.

    Are metal flutes better than the wooden ones?

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are referring to the classical silver flute vs a wooden native style flute, I would say that they are two different instruments, each with their own virtues. There is a great difference in tone and the method with which they are played. Different, yes. Better? Apples and oranges.
