- Am Mittwoch 14. Februar 2018 fährt die MS Europa in die Bass Strait ein (die Meerenge zwischen Australien und Tasmanien) und kommt prompt in einen Sturm, dem das Schiff aber sehr souverän trotzt. Auch das Mittagessen auf dem Lido Deck schmeckt.....
When MV Europa enters Bass Strait on the way to Melbourne it hits gale force wind and waves to approx. 6 m which it rides quite comfortably.

That ship has awesome stabilizers. You can see the movement is minimal despite the waves being at least 5 meters tall. I used to be an officer on a ship without stabilizers, and the pitch and roll is horrible even with waves half this size.
Yes we were glad indeed that the ships stabilizers worked very well.
Its amazing how smooth the ride is...people walking around drinking wine...most work boats in the gulf of mexico would be fighting for their lives in those condions. That ships sure built for the Southern Ocean

I'm seasick just watching this. I have no desire to go on cruises. I tried a short one once, spent most of it sick. Evidently some people are more prone than others to become seasick. This video came up in my recommended. Evidently TH-cam wants me to take a cruise.

Em seguida a pandemia.....
Wunderschönes Video mit tollem Seegang! Wäre gerne dabeigewesen. Habe vor vielen Jahren eine- Sturmfahrt
im Oktober zurück von Helgoland mit der heute nicht mehr existierenden MS Wilhelmshaven erlebt. Da hatten wir auch
vergleichbar hohe Wellen. Die "MS Wilhelmshaven" war unter Seeleuten für Ihr "Schlingern" unter Sturmfahrt bekannt.
Die Wellen schlugen hoch bis zu den Restaurantscheiben, das Deck war für Passagiere gesperrt. Das Schiff schwankte trotz Stabilisatoren sehr, es ging im Restaurant viel Geschirr zu Bruch, der Kellner ist 2x mit voll beladenem
Tablett mit Speisen ins Schwanken gekommen, gestürzt und Alles auf dem Fußboden verteilt. Unter Jubel der noch
wenigen Restaurantbesucher hat er dann keine Speisen mehr aufgetragen. Regelmäßig erscholl der Ruf: "Gläser festhalten!" Eine große Welle traf das Schiff, das sich dann auf die Seite legte, gelegentlich zitterte der Fußboden,
man merkte förmlich wenn sich der Bug in ein Wellental bohrte und die Schiffsschraube leer schlug. Nach Auskunft
der Mannschaft hatten wir einen Sturm der Stärke 8 - 9, Böen 10! Der Sturm ist erst nachmittags beim Einbooten
auf Helgoland innerhalb kürzester Zeit aufgebrist. In den Bördebooten wurden Plastikplanen ausgegeben, Außensitzende mußten Diese dann festhalten, die Gischt schlug über die Boote. Oben am Schiff wurden die Einstiegsluken geöffnet und immer, wenn wir wie ein Fahrstuhl mit einer Welle hochgehoben wurden, schnappten uns 2 im Schiff stehende Matrosen und holten einen Passagier an Bord! Die Arme mußte man dabei runterhängen lassen, so das Sie uns unter die Achsel fassen konnten. Die Strandpromenade auf Helgoland war nur noch unter Lebensgefahr zu betreten - weit schlugen die Wellen darüber hinweg! Das war meine schönste und interessanteste
Helgolandfahrt. Liebe diese Insel und war schon oft wieder dort, letztes Jahr 2020 mal für 6 Tage - gerade zur
CORONA-Zeit zu empfehlen! Die Schiffe dorthin legen jetzt direkt im Hafen an, KEIN Ein- und Ausbooten mit den kleinen Bördebooten mehr nötig (Finde ich schade!-War immer ein besonderes Erlebnis!) Auf der vorgelagerten Badedüne, die man mit einer kleinen, in kurzen Abständen Pendelnden Fähre erreicht, herrschte zu meiner Aufenthaltszeit (Juli 2020) keine Maskenplicht. War schön vom Strandkorb aus (im Tourist-Office vorbestellen)
bei leckerem, gekühltem Bier den Menschen ohne Maskenzwang beim Ballspiel zuzuschauen. Das Restaurant
mit schöner Terasse mit Meerblick war geöffnet. WC CORONAMÄSSIG sicher, sauber und gepflegt - auch auf dem Weg zur Ablegestelle der kleinen Fähre. Auf dem Weg dorthin kommt man an einer Kolonie Seerobben vorbei,
die sich am Strandufer aufhalten und auf dem Rücken liegend ein Sonnenbad nehmen. - Dort stehen 2 Bänke zum
Verweilen und Zuschauen. Zur Anreise empfehle ich den neuen "Halunderjet" (Fährt von Hamburg aus - keine Angst
vor Seekrankheit - schaukelt kaum bis gar nicht Fahrzeit ca. 4 Stunden oder von Cuxhaven aus die Neue "MS Helgoland" - ebenfalls mit guten Stabilisatoren ausgestattet). (Beide auf TH-cam mit versch. Videos zu finden)
Neugierig geworden? Dann, wenn der Lockdown endlich wieder vorbei ist, mal nicht ins Ausland fliegen, sich die
evtl. Quarantäne ersparen sondern einen schönen Urlaub im Inland auf Deutschlands Hochseeinsel verbringen.
Nebenbei hat man auf der Insel zollfreien Einkauf!

Exactly. That is not a storm. A Bass Strait storm has 15 metre waves. You would not be allowed on deck.

That is pretty amazing how stable that ship is. We crossed from Melbourne to Tasmania with a similar sea with the Ferry and I can tell you it was a bit of a roller coaster compared to this ship.
I don't get sea sick and I crossed the Bass straight in a 42 ft yacht (saling back a yacht from the Sydney to Hobart race), which is an adventure by itself.
Many thanks for your comment. We were lucky as we were heading straight into wind. I guess it would have been worse if the wind would have come from the side. Anyway I was also thinking then about dhe boats of the Sydney-Hobart race in those weather conditions...

I don'nt have any experience in sea.....(well traveld in a ship from Montevideo to Santos when I was 3 years old😁) But , think that for people is not used to ocean this water movements can be so uncorfortable...And if I have to go trhu this nowadays...maybe feel the same way...

Bei genau dem Wellengang war ich 1975 mit einer 7 m Segelyacht unterwegs. war mir nicht sicher ob wir das überleben.
Klasse und Hut ab, zumal 1975 solch ein Trip noch eine besondere Herausforderung war, es gab nicht viele die sich damals rauswagten.
@@svens.5139 Ja, das war es. Wir hatten die Yacht für 10 Tage gemietet und sind um Schwedens Küste geschippert. Am Vortag wurde die See kabbelig aber wir hatten keine Chance direkt zur finalen Destination zu kommen. Und auf der letzten Fahrt hat es uns dann richtig erwischt, incl. Brecher die über das ganze Schiff sind. Wir haben uns an Bord festgebunden damit keiner über die Reling geht.
