    Entering NY Harbor , Breathtaking! I lived in the same house overlooking the Harbor from my birth in 1946 until I was 28. This was the era of the great ships from not just England, but other countries. I'd watch them dock and depart and I knew them all by their horn sounds. Thanks for reviving that memory! Sure, it's nice to have some "creature comforts" such as a few nice restaurants/bistros/bars/lounges, and the usual array of gyms, libraries, theatres, pools, etc.
      Other than that, what I want on board is PEACE and QUIET. Places where I can watch the world float by while I read a book without hordes of annoying strangers invading my space. I know I could stay in my cabin but that's not the point. I most definitely do NOT want to be stuck in the middle of some combo of Disneyland and the MGM Grand for days or weeks on end the moment I leave my own quarters.Anyone who needs that constant and artificial stimulation to keep from being "bored" has, IMO, big problems.

    Definitely a cruise for the more experienced cruiser! No port days ("you're stuck in a 8x12' cell" as someone below put it), 'nothing to do' (no water slides or zip-lines), too many format nights (can't wear shorts, flip flops and Hawaiian shirts all the time).
    However, I for one am glad this more traditional experience is still available for those who would truly enjoy it.

      It’s not a cruise, it’s a crossing, for anyone who needs to travel between Europe and the USA. Formal nights are optional, you can use the self service restaurant if you like. We were bound for Canada this time, a few years ago we were bound from London to Los Angeles.

    Thanks for posting. I did the New York to Southampton crossing in 2016. Absolutely loved it and will hopefully do it again in the future (probably do the reverse crossing). The QM2 is by far the most beautiful ship on which I’ve traveled. It makes one appreciate the difference between a grand ocean liner and a cruise ship. I’ve always been obsessed with the elegance of ocean travel of the 30s and 40s, so if you want to try and get a taste of that today. The Queen Mary 2 is as close as you’re going to get. 🚢.

    This ship is a perfect combination of modern cruise ship and old ocean liner's
    It is made to travel through serious storms unlike modern cruise that get rescheduled if the climate is not close to ideal
    Even it's appearance is not too box shaped, thus making it look more like a ship than a floating hotel

      Other modern ships are more than capable of traveling through adverse weather conditions. Every cruise ship makes transatlantic and transpacific journeys multiple times throughout their lives. The reason they re-route during pleasure cruises is for the passenger experience. No one wants to pay for a cruise vacation and be tossed around like a bean bag and be forced to stay indoors.

    • @hb1338
      @hb1338 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sbeve6559 You've missed the point. QM2 makes Atlantic crossings in appalling conditions *without* compromising passenger comfort and with absolutely no need to reschedule. I made a crossing from NYC to Southampton with 3 solid days of force 8 and twenty foot swell. We weren't allowed outdoors but from the inside we wondered what all the fuss was about as the ship sailed serenely on as though she were on a millpond.

    I first took this trip in November 1982, on the Queen Elizabeth 2. There was a special Boat Train from London Waterloo that went nonstop directly to the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal. It used the tracks you can briefly see in the foreground. We walked from the train directly onto the ship, and the tagged luggage we put into the baggage van at London Waterloo was taken directly to our room.
    In 2005 we took the Queen Mary 2 eastbound, and noted that the tracks at the Southampton terminal were no longer used. Too bad.

    The Queen Mary 2, it is the best, and greatest, and most dignified, of current times.
    She is a worthy heir to all the great ocean liners in history. And possibly the last.
    Cruise ships are circuses and brothels.
    Here in the QM2 there are still values and seriousness.

    Addressing some of the faqs and general statements in the comment section:
    Starting with the obvious;
    This is an OCEAN LINER, not a cruise ship and this video depicts a CROSSING, not a cruise.
    “hahaha titanic” - I cannot begin to describe how disrespectful that is to those who lost their life in the disaster it’s not funny or original.
    “It looks boring” - You clearly haven’t been on the ship then. If you had, then you’d know it’s not, there is a theatre with shows and lectures, a planetarium, a cinema, a library, 3 pools (2 outdoor, 1 indoor), a pub and a casino - for those who want such a thing.
    “The passengers look old” - And your point is? It’s perfectly fine. There were plenty of younger passengers if it’s that important to your crossing.
    “How much is it to go on this ship?” - prices range; www.seat61.com/queen-mary-2-transatlantic.htm#Transatlantic%20fares
    “How long is the crossing?” The crossing takes 7 days/one week.
    “Are there private toilets?” There are private toilets in every cabin as far as I’m aware.
    “Why does it take 7 days instead of 5 like it used to or 2 or 3 like the older ships?” The crossing has been extended for more economical fuel management and also (probably) to increase the sales of alcohol and other such items that cost money.
    If there’s anything else feel free to let me know.
