  • When the Dreamcast was first revealed, it was done so alongside the NAOMI Board. Built on the same specification as the Dreamcast, this would prove not only to be the most powerful arcade board in existence on release, but it would outlive it's console counterpart and be home to classic titles from both Sega and third parties.
James the Segaholic and Dan the Mega Driver discuss this legendary arcade system.

    Another superb vid guys.
I wonder if Sega saw how Namco’s System 11 / System 12 helped them with the crossover into easy PlayStation home port sales? Tekken 3 was a game changer as it was a huge arcade release followed up with a huge easy home conversion - I guess that anyone in the arcade business couldn’t help but notice.
I think Sega were very smart in making Naomi licensed for use by other developers too. A low cost system where software was on ROM carts rather than expensive boards meant that arcades couldn’t resist getting cabinets in. It was low risk as well as having cutting edge tech - buying Naomi cabs was a no brainer.

We were spoilt back then weren’t we, was only natural the jumps would slow down on arcade hardware from Model 3 > Naomi. Probably the arcade hardware with the finest software.

also the hardware never gets the recognition it deserves like the neo geo does 😔

while I agree it's a crime it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, I'm also happy because I'm currently collecting Naomi hardware/GDs, so I'm glad the game collector Internet hasn't learned how awesome it is

All I know is Dead or Alive 2 looked and played vastly better than Virtua Fighter 3. The reason Dreamcast ports of Model 3 games weren’t exact, is the fact that developers had a hard time with the Model 3 code.

Great video, guys. I see we had similar taste (as expected) ;)
With the Dreamcast, SEGA really achieved their "arcade at home" slogan. It was the first time I could experience at home the exact same 3D game as in the arcades without any compromise. Unlike Model 3 games (for the reasons you explained), the NAOMI allowed for easier, faster and better home ports, thus reducing costs as well as the time and ressources needed.
Virtua Tennis blew my mind as a coin-op (a tennis game had never looked as realistic before, like you said), I could only hope for a home port, and only a few months later, I could buy and play the exact same game at home! I knew the NAOMI was the same hardware, but it was only much later that I discovered that the NAOMI actually had higher specs like you mentioned, which makes the Dreamcast port even more impressive.
About Crazy Taxi, I always thought it was identical to the arcade version. It was only a few months ago that I discovered, thanks to a side-by-side video comparison, that the arcade version has a slightly better draw distance.
Kind of off topic with the Dreamcast not able to show its full potential due to premature death, but I'm still bitter we couldn't get the SEGA games we should've got on the Dreamcast, like Panzer Dragoon Orta, OutRun 2, Crazy Taxi 3 and the likes... What a waste!

Speaking of Crazy Taxi, if you watch closely, there are significant differences on texture resolution for Naomi. And understandably so.
What nobody talks about is how both Crazy Taxi games were incredible examples of "open-world" maps, constantly streaming from the disc, in pre GTA 3 times, and at 60fps no less.
Unfortunately Dreamcast wouldn't be capable of producing those Xbox games like they were made. We're talking about a machine with a modern GPU and programmable shaders, which none of the other consoles at the time had.
Even F-Zero GX was on a different league for Dreamcast, though Daytona USA 2001 is the closest we got performance wise.

If you can only have one arcade cabinet, make it a naomi netboot multi. The Naomi got me into collecting arcade hardware. Such a huge, varied library

Re the talk about Fila - the brand had a short-lived revival a few years ago. It was suddenly very trendy for a year or two, especially their trainers, but interest in it seems to have waned again recently.

The first time i played House of the Dead 2 me and my friend got hooked on it, spent the whole afternoon in the arcade and our wallets were considerably lighter by the time we'd left, not to mention the cramp we had in our arms haha

I caught a premiere for a change! (Need to catch the first 5 mins though)
Some great games there. Naomi was an awesome board. Played so much Capcom vs Snk 2 on the DC. Brilliant game.

Could have naomi 2 games ever have been ported to the DC. I remember VS3 had dreamcast adverts in the game.

With compression techniques and some clever nips and tucks, I don’t see why not. I’m still of the opinion Virtua Fighter 4 would have looked smoother and more colourful on the Dreamcast than it did on PS2.
The PS2 port makes noticeable scale backs from the NAOMI 2 arcade version, but with Dreamcast essentially part of that “family”, I think it would have had an edge in any port. - James.
