  • My new favorite portable cook tops. Induction cookers are awesome and portable not to mention affordable. I have a Kmart brand up against the Ikea brand. Let's see how we go.

    I have had a few induction cooktops and they all do full power well. The thing I would really like to know is the size of the induction ring, large flat pot boil water you can see where the heat is and how large of a pan it will heat evening. The most important thing is simmer, they all have a few wattages (put a power meter on the unit) you will see 3 or 4 wattages then after that they cycle on and off. Finding a unit that you can set an even temperature and it does not cycle, even boiling rice you go between over boil and not boiling as they power cycle.

      So does the Ikea unit go down to low power without cycling the power on & off?

      my one does that l put cream on low and it caught on the bottom, where as on my gas with it turned right down it does not catch

    Thanks for posting, we have been using one for years, as you say being portable, we use ours away from the kitchen.

    I had the ikea and it is still going strong after more than 4 years. I bought the Kmart induction cooker and less than a year later it is shorting. The fan of the Kmart one has always been very very noisy. I tried to return the Kmart under warranty but could not find warranty so👎🏿👎🏿

    i tried to find a kmart one because they had good reviews, but they were sold out,the warehouse in nz had their model for $5 less and with a 3 year warranty which l have not seen on others, and it is good but l made a few rookie mistakes like trying to grill steaks in a big pan on full bore, the ones in the middle were burning whilst those on the edges were raw, and then it shut down because it got too hot, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to dry frying

    You do not need to rush out and buy pots to work on your induction cook top. If a MAGNET STICKS TO IT IT WILL WORK. it's that easy

    • @debeeriz
      @debeeriz ปีที่แล้ว

      l had a large fry pan that had a magnetic base and it would not work, i use gas and the base was dirty so l cleaned it and it still did not work so i put a straight edge on it and the base was cupped, it also has to be flat to work

    With less than a year of usage, my kmart one would frequently turn off if you set it to high watts (maybe overheat). And then a few months later, the whole thing died. Turning it on cuts the power to my entire house. I will throw this away and buy the Ikea one instead. Also the fan of the kmart one is a bit too noisy for comfort.

    Hey Chris, wondering if the Kmart has the ability to adjust to a specific temperature?

    • @chrismedia3312
      @chrismedia3312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question Noah, I have not seen any of these cookers with specific temperature control. I don't have the reason but they all seem to work in a similar way and each manufacturer uses their own terminology but having said that, they are amazing.

      If you press the menu button again, it goes into temperature mode and you can then press up and down from there.

    I have the new Ikea version and even though it says 2000watts it only pulls 1200 according to my watt meter. Still fast at cooking and will burn anything on full power.

    • @debeeriz
      @debeeriz ปีที่แล้ว

      i saw on another channel that it all depends on the size of the pot, they only pull maximum wattage on large flat bottom pans, he had his set at 2000 watts and it varied from 800 to 1900 depending on which pot he used

    Which one is your preferred one after 6 months and why?

    • @chrismedia3312
      @chrismedia3312  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Steve, it comes down to personal taste. A few people seem to like the Kmart one especially for camping because they're smaller but from day one the Ikea one is our preferred unit because of the fact the it looks good, has a metal clip to hook it on a wall for storage and my main thing is the cord is much better. The cord is thicker and is located in a better spot out of the way not to mention I like the menu or controls better. What I have learned over the past months is that you should never turn it off from the power point because the fans cool down the glass top avoiding any issues, my better half just turned of the power point and I noticed some marking on the glass top but over all I liked it so much I bought another Ikea one which is smaller but looks the same, hope that helps.

    how's the kmart's timer function? does it beep when the time is up?

    • @chrismedia3312
      @chrismedia3312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know I have never used a timer in anything. It’s because you should never ever leave anything hot unattended, I was a chef in my younger days so hot stuff should be checked regularly.

      thanks! it's particularly useful for cooking pasta or something. so i figured to reduce the chance of overcooking pasta and such, setting a timer on the cooktop will useful.

      Yes, I make hard boiled eggs on mine. I boil the water at MAX then press MIN and set the timer for 10 min. Beeps and turns off when finished.

    I have a different model and find it impossible to maintain a constant temperature unless at full power. It seems that anything lower than full power just cycles between full power and no power at different rates.
    Impossible to simmer anything.

    Does kmart i.c works on any size of pan?

    • @chrismedia3312
      @chrismedia3312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think first thing the pan needs to be suitable and I am not sure if there is a specific size. I never use over sized pans. they can be a bit bigger but not much more than a third bigger. That’s only my opinion not sure if there is a limit. Sorry I can’t be more specific.

    Do they cost more than the stove to run?

    • @chrismedia3312
      @chrismedia3312  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sara, I don’t have any data but I can say they are very efficient because they only heat up when a pan is on it and they shut off when you remove the pan. We only cook at 60 or 70% so I think they are a good option not replacement if that makes sense.

      No, but it depends, these are 1800 watt max, and run off a 15 amp kitchen outlet. If you have a multiple induction hob that runs a 220 circuit 40, or 50 amp like an average stove they can run 3600 watts and up and will definitely be more efficient, especially in the summer, they literally throw off no heat from the surface. I lay a thin towel over the cooking surface under skillet to catch grease splatter. Its crazy.
