    I use my Itaki cooker for lunch... similar and I love it! The water in the bottom determines the cook time. It shuts off automatically when the water is gone.

    Thank you for this clear explanation! I have encountered less efficient units which are very slow to heat up and could cause food hygiene concerns, but this one looks good. Cheaper units tend to produce direct heat rather than using this bain marie approach and they suggest their purpose is re-heating food rather than cooking it. If you were making a drink requiring hot water to go with your food, you could perhaps use near boiling water initially in the unit to speed up the cooking. Suddenly, I'm quite hungry ...

    Nice clear informative video, thanks. For the cookie and chocolate cake you could try a greaseproof paper top tied with string - this is how my Mum used to make steamed puddings.

    Thank you so much! I was just looking for some way to produce a hot meal, or warm leftovers without using propane, shore power, wood fire or the solar oven for those times without sun, or a fire, like overnight boondocks in parking lots, a rainstorm or snowstorm. Recently we were in the ice storm in Texas, and no sun, power, or ways to set up a fire in the Kelly kettle, barbeque or a campfire. This fits the niche nicely, not too much drain on the solar battery, and can use the small solar generator instead of the beast. Also great to see the versatility of meals possible, but I am sold on the idea of heating up water and leftovers while getting ready to drive. Would love to see more recipes for this gadget!
    Liked and subbed 👍💙

    it's really stupid question why don't you just use a low wattage crock pot it's one big container it would be easier to cook than the small things you don't add water

      I have a low wattage crock pot. They take FOREVER. Like, 5 or 6 hours. I think these electric bento boxes the Japanese sell might be faster?

    • @RealJohnnyDingo
      @RealJohnnyDingo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seasea12 I've used both a crockpot (75w low, 150w high) and a steamer similar to this unit. You can bake or roast in a crockpot as the element gets really hot. it can brown to some degree. i use it to slow cook things that take 3+ hours. I used the electric bento to cook rice, ramen, curry or steam dumplings or baozi. it seems faster, but then again I'm cooking faster recipes. it seems to be more limited by the temperature of boiling water than raw power.

      Good for heating up meals while driving. Tried to cook w it - not enough wattage - but a small 300 watt rice cooker alao from Canadian Tire works well for omletes and rice with veg and lentils

    • @oddlytimbotwillison6296
      @oddlytimbotwillison6296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karenlewkowitz5858 Well I've cooked with it hundreds of times from raw to fully done. It will fully cook cubed potatoes (my usual test). It fully cooks meats as well, and I've tested this with a thermometer for safety. I've also kinda-baked bread but it has that thickness same as using a slow-cooker. These are not re-heated foods. But a lot depends on how full it is, and what form the food is in. It needs to be filled up without a lot of air in it, and foods with a higher moisture content do better.

    This is useful for emergency back up power. Soo many in Texas lost power for days and this isn't a one time event. There are many who every year have to prepare for hurricanes etc. The sun never ceases to rise again so easy to recharge! This is awesome for heating up a can of soup in an emergency, water for oatmeal, heck even heating up formula for a baby's bottle (OBVIOUSLY watching the time to not overheat)!!

      A cheaper 200 to 300 watt rice cooker with 4 cups (cooked) capacity may be a lot better. There are even 12 volt DC cookers that can be adapted to be wired directly to solar panels.

    Looks like that works in the same manner as a bottle/food warmer I took apart (150W). It uses a PTC heating element on a metal plate to heat the water in the small space below in the center. In addition to the PTC resistance limit, it has a thermal cutoff and a thermal fuse for safety. The technology has potential for other heating purposes

    Assuming you don't want to mess with a propane stove and you want to use your Solar kit with a solar gen or inverter this little appliances is simple and uses very little wattage. 300watts is low compare to a toaster 700watts etc. I think I will buy the little cooker.

    Great idea…I’ve been looking for fuel-based alternative to either warm up leftovers or at least cook eggs…being a Keto-ist and One-Meal-A-Day, would be nice to have more than cold (meat) leftovers - nice break from salads and sardines 😍
    Currently, I pour small amount of boiling water into a large-mouth thermos bottle, put leftover meat in a plastic baggie and submerse it in the hot water; works pretty well for several hours.

    If it was better insulated, the cooking process could continue using almost no energy after the first heating up. That is what "cooking boxes" do. Even at home, I sometimes put a pot with boiling food into my bed, cover it well, and let it cook for 30 min or so.

    Interesting video. Certainly seems plausible but I would think that the instant pot mini would do all that and offer some extras too. I think lower power consumption overall too (higher power but for a much shorter time).
    There are tons of small power stations that will put out over 800 watts and pull in solar or car charging quickly now.

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem. Could you update the link? I am really considering investing in this electric lunch box. This is a nice option but I would suggest the best way to cook for efficiency is using a low wattage induction cooker with a pressure cooker vessel. All the large institutions know that pressure cooking is the most efficient way to go. Coupled with a small induction module in the 300 to 500 watt range would be perfect.

    This is excellent Darbin! As well it's practically impossible to find any electric cookware to that uses any low electrically on the road. Try some hard cooked eggs, I hear they are easier to peel. btw your accent is very endearing. Safe Travels!

    Anyone know where to find this for sale? I've found similar-ish cookers but nothing quite like this with two pots inside water.

    In all likelihood, the vast amount of energy is used in warming the water up. If you put in water that is already been heated you will probably save half your energy. It would be interesting to test this.

    It should shut off automatically when the water is boiled off, if not it's a major drawback.

    I wonder about chemical leaching into the food (plastic lid) while cooking?

    Solar is best when it’s not cloudy. If you go with Solar it might be a good idea to periodically add more panels to your gear so that you can maximize how much power you can collect on cloudy days
