Super Fun, have you looked at sheet to tiller steering, no need for an autopilot or power usage. (I emailed you a pdf book) or look for DYI wind vane steering systems. Bet you could make one
I did have a quick look but it would be a fair bit of work to get it setup properly and a wind vane wouldn’t fit unfortunately. A tiller pilot is probably my best option since I have so much power onboard!
@@AlexGoesSailing aren't you an engineer? It's a bit of string and a rubber band my dude! Plus, if your autopilot breaks down you're back in the same boat anyway, might as well mess around with it while you're shopping for autopilots, then at least you have an idea what you can jury-rig if the thing craps out and you need to go below to put the kettle on.
@@tombackhouse9121 very true but the main issue is the amount of resistance on my tiller. I need to take it apart and see if I can reduce it. If I get the chance to try it out I definitely will be!
@@AlexGoesSailing Oh I see, little jobs do tend to lead to bigger jobs don't they 🤣 well good luck anyway, looking forward to seeing more of the Scillies from you soon 😊
I have a little 21' bilge keel over in Essex. It's great to see someone taking a very similar boat out in the open seas. Quite an adventure. Loving your vids too.
Yeah, I bet. Jib sheet tied to tiller with a bungie chord also on tiller to make fine adjustments. I used this method on a snapdragon 23 back in the day. But only works from beam reach to close hauled.
Just seen this a year after the event. Glad to see you bought Philps pasties. By far the best around. We have friends who live up country that we regularly send chilled ones to, that they then freeze.
great! we are almost into "fibreglass weather" to start repairing our V21 Selkie here in BC. plan is to get her ready for later this season, and emulate your offshore fun by entering the R2AK race maybe 2023. watch this space... thanks, and keep the videos coming.
Thank you! Luckily he was good for the rest of the trip. Had has been in tougher conditions then that before and been fine but that’s when he takes the pill in advance!
Try a bungie cord. tie it to the port side of the cockpit or stansion, take it to the tiller, depending on how much pressure you have on the rudder, put more wraps of cord around the tiller, start with 3 or 4, then put some tension on the cord and tie it to the stbd side of the boat. This is not perfect but does do quite well. To make fine adjustments, hold the wraps of cord around the tiller and twist like an outboard throttle. Have fun!
Well done on reaching the Scillies. I have tried twice but sometimes sailing I get seasick like Tom, so I turned back. I'm planning on trying again but will take my diesel rib, should take about and hour and a half at a steady cruising speed 😁
That’s one way to do it! Tom took tablets for the way back and they worked well. He took one once we hit the water and came back out again so that was him done for the crossing haha
Nice one dude! Love it!. Just found your channel as just at the point of saving for a sail boat. I’ve sea kayaked the Scillies but would love to sail across so was awesome to see your video. Will check out your other videos. Just need to get me a boat and get some practice in haha. Cheers!
Just a little on the risky side! Yeah Tom wasn’t having fun but I guess he learned his lesson and he probably has a more sailing experience then me! Luckily he was fine for the rest of the trip!

Thank you Tim! I was a great crossing!
Doing this single handed in a few weeks time, small bilge keeler. Been before and can't wait... change waves to swell! 2m waves would kill you...
Have a good trip!
Is Meraki a blue water hull, or do you just like living dangerously? I noticed Tom wasn't having near as much fun as you.😂

looking at getting a catalina 22 for my first sailboat.
Great choice!!!
Just found your channel, do you do long trips on the boat?
Yes I do! This season will be packed full of them!
I got 22 ft hunter 1985 want to travel with it
Depends where you want to go and your experience but you would have heaps of fun if you did!
Is it a Vivacity 21?
Yes!!!
Is your boat swing kill are full kill
Twin keel!

Nice little boat! Probably not a realistic boat to sail the world on as it is a bit small but would be ideal for inshore and costal sailing!
@@AlexGoesSailing thanks do u think i could sail from sweden to germany?
@@sebastianwohlgethan8071 depends how well the boat is setup and how good you are at sailing. It’s not an easy trip to take that’s for sure!
@@AlexGoesSailing i have never sailed in my lfie but ik most of the thing u have to do on a sailing boat
@@sebastianwohlgethan8071 you should really take some lessons or go out with experienced sailors to learn before going out on your own boat.
