- Today, we're going to discuss the diverse racial makeup of all of the Central American countries of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. I'm going to explain the history behind each country, and how that's contributed to the people living there in the modern day.

Masaman you got a lot of things right about belize but you got the black diaspora wrong. It's divided between Garifuna and creole population. And the Garifuna ethnic group stretches from the southern coast of belize, stann Creek to a part of Nicaragua.

Belize and Honduras have a large population of African descendants . I'm garifuna .
marvin fernandez Sorry but i feel that that is not the case in Honduras, it is rare for me to see afro-honduran people exept in the north coast in their garifuna cominities... i think they are a minority here.
We are 7 percent of the population. Yes the majority of afro honduran live in the atlantic coast of Honduras but there is also huge polulation in san pedro sula and the capital Tegucigalpa.

I'm Mexican and I got a DNA test and it said I am 79.7% Native Central American and I was shocked at first because I didn't expect such a high number but now I embrace being indigenous to the Americas, I'm guessing it's a mix of Mexica(Aztec) and Mayan blood and I feel very happy to be that

Was it myheritage? That is very wrong. “Central American” is not a race and they mix your Spanish and Indigenous dna into that. Try transferring it to dna.land and gedmatch for better results. I got over 60% there and 32-39% everywhere else for Native and 54-63% European and 2-7% African. Trust me MyHeritage is the worst place for your dna information for a Latino/a. I’m Guatemalan.

I'm so happy to have found this video. It gives an insight on my genetic identity. My grandpa on my mom side is black and from Belize and my grandma is mestizo from Guatemala. And my dad is more of a lighter skinned Guatemala but (the call themselves Spanish) mestizo either way. The video was very informative.

You are basically proud Guatemalan. Guatemala fpr centuries has been so rich in gold, silver, jade, nickel and such beautiful landscape. From 1925 to 1984 the Guatemalan Quetzal was one of the strongest currencies in the World paired with the french franc, US Dollar and above the Swiss Franc. I have a Spanish last name just like almost everyone else in Guatemala and I though my DNA was Native american and Spanish, but it says that I am 30% native 60% European from Portuguese/German/Spanish/Scottish. 10% African from Angola.
I think this is because the later waves of European inmigration had people from everywhere, not just Spaniards and Italians.

Because Guatemala/Honduras/El Salvador have the similar Maya heritage which the rest of Central American countries including Nicaragua lack.

@@elleelle1888 Uhm...other different tribes? The Maya sphere of influence didn't extend that far in Pre-Columbian times. Into Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, or beyond.

Thank you so much for this! my mom's parents died and have no recollection of honduran history and my only living grandparent left his home at the age of 11. Unfortunately my family experienced extreme poverty and most of the family did not have a parent raise them because of death. Thank you for the video!! :)

Hey I'm Salvadoran, do alot of Nicaraguans have Portuguese last names? I took a DNA test and I match people from Nicaragua that have Portuguese last names, I find it very interesting. My test also said I was more Portuguese than Spaniard.
Bejeezus Almost all of Central Americans are descendants of slaves. Whichever last name our masters gave us matters little to me as far as DNA is concerned.
jean moreno True, I'm about 6% West African. I have a scalp problem called acne keloidalis nuchae which according to Google is found mostly African men and Hispanic/Latinos that carry African ancestry like me.
Bejeezus Is the 6% West African an estimate or did you do a test? I haven't done a test, but estimate myself to be about 15% African (I'm also Guanaco).
jean moreno I did 23andMe and AncestryDNA. Ancestry had me at 2% Senegal, 2% Mali, 2% Africa Southeastern Bantu, 1% Ivory/ Coast Ghana, and 2% North Africa. 23andMe had me at 4.9% Sub-Saharan African, and 2.6% North African and Arabian. North African and Arabian I guess you shouldn't count, so between both test about 6% Sub-Saharan African.
I'm from Placencia, Belize. The picture of the beach you showed around 4:08 is literally a 30 minute walk away from my house. It's clearly an older picture because it looks alot different now.

Guatemala ain't over it, Masaman. We just had a referendum to decide if we should send it to the International Court of Justice to fix the issue. 96 percent of Guatemalans voted yes.

Guatemala for centuries has been so rich in gold, silver, jade, nickel and such a beautiful landscape. From 1925 to 1984 the Guatemalan currency the Quetzal was one of the strongest currencies in the World paired with Yhe French Franc, the US Dollar and well above the Swiss Franc. Guatemala most recover its mayan territory of Belice and sue the pirate, criminal and parasite monarchy from the small island of England (small and with limited resources that had to sent pirates for centuries to most of the world to steal and rob). The last president to keep the Guatemalan Quetzal strong and the economy so stable was Kjell Eugenio Laugerud (son of morwegian father and Guatemalan mother).
@@jbarnes4271 Guatemalan is not claiming its people its claiming its mayan territory of Belice were english pirates settled more than 2 centuries ago (typical of english pirates around the world symbol of robbery). Belice is a province of Guatemala by law and by history.

Panama has more of a Caribbean-South American culture. Food, accents, music , political history - it has far more in common with coastal Colombians and with Venezuelans. Even more in common with Cuba, Dominican Rep, and Puerto Rico, than say with Costa Rica even.
Panamá was taken away from Colombia from the U. S. to make the Channel, so if you look why these countries are all divided, go to see historical facts, and the one behind all this is the U. S.
Yes, the USA was instrumental in Panama's break with Colombia, but it's a long shot blaming the USA for all the differences latin American countries have with each other. Panama historically always answered to a Viceroy in South America, and had much more contact with other trade-route cities, such as Habana, San Juan, Cartagena, Sto Domingo, Maracaibo, and also LIma, than it did with the say Costa Rica or Honduras, that answered to a Viceroy in Guatelamala or thereabouts. Perhaps more contact with "US culture" than other latin american countries has had more affect on some countries than others, but not by a long shot is it because of the USA that Costa Rican spoken-spanish and culture is very different from Panamanian spoken-spanish and culture. ( or PR differencs with say Mexico or any other latin american spanish-speaking nation) Panamanians felt 'Panamanian' from long before the break with Colombia in 1903. Panama broke with Spain and voluntarily joined the union of Gran Colombia ( Venezuela, Colombia, and i think Ecuador)

Also, the Black and Mestizo populations are switched. Panama is more like 70% Black and 14% Mestizo. I'm Panamanian so I know.

Yes mainly from Jamaica and Barbados, they were brought by the Americans (U.S) to finish the Panama canal that the French started, and the majority of them settled in the province of Colon.

Belize has TWO main Afro-descendant populations. One of them are Kriols or Creoles who vary in African, European and to a lesser extent Native ancestry, and have COLONIAL ties with only SMALL foreign immigration from Jamaicans and Barbadians (NOT Trinidad).
The other are the Garinagu or Garifunas who are predominantly African but with around 20% admixture from native Caribbean people (Caribs, Arawaks, taino-related people). They came to Belize from 1802 - 1832 after being EXILED from St. Vincent & the Grenadines via Roatan, Honduras.

News flash, both groups are African in culture. No Native American would confuse a Garifuna with a Tribesman.
@@Guirolon doesn't matter. You wouldn't confuse most Kriols for Garifunas. Kriol vary a lot, but average around 60% African and most of the rest European, with some Native. This is closer to "mulatto" range than West African looking. Garifunas are around 80-85% African, which means that their native ancestry doesn't have much a phenotypical impact on their looks. It's like Puerto Ricans who are racial mixed, but look phenotypically "white".

monca01 that’s the reason why Panama is different than the other Central American countries in many things. Panama was added to Central America.

I enjoyed the video! I just want to mention another significant Amerindian group that you left out in Nicaragua known as the Mangue or Chorotegas. The name of Nicaragua actually comes from a Mangue chief of the same name.

I am from Puerto Barrios, real close to Livingston and Belize and there are so many Belizeans there and people who have family on both sides of the “border”. I remember when I went to visit, people would cross the border daily to work or just visit family.

Anthropologists and geneticists are stopping using the word “race”. Sub-Saharan Africans and aborigines Australians looks very similar but their genes are the most distance from all regions.
I was born in Bluefields, in Nicaragua's Caribbean coast (Founded by Dutch pirate Blauvelt). The majority are Africans mixed with native American, German, British, Dutch, Middle Eastern and Chinese. Main language is English (not Spanish) and most are members of the Moravian Church (bought by Germans from Moravia). My ancestry according to my DNA is: 20% South-Central European, 13% Native American, 13% Spanish, 10% North Africa,10% Ashkenazi jew, 10% Levantine, 7% Senegal, 3% Somalia, 5% Caucasus, 5% Iranian, 3% Irish.

Some Central American countries share a common border, meaning that no matter which nationality you are from you can freely cross the border between countries similar to what it is in the EU. Also, when it comes to international trade, Central American nations won't do a separate deal but rather as a whole block.
Kinda offended that you didn’t talk that much about Nicaragua. But you are right on that if you would confuse the garífuna and the Miskito it would end pretty badly
You missed to talk about Chinese descendants in Panama and Nicaragua, German and Italians descendants in Nicaragua, Middle Easterns in Honduras and Nicaragua, and Jews all over Central America.
I met a Chinese family in California, they only spoke Spanish and were from Honduras. The city of Tela has a separate Chinese cemetery that is pretty much forgotten and overgrown. Most of the Middle Easterners I met in Honduras were Lebanese or Turkish.

A lot of people speaks english over here. Most of us in a medium level. About inmmigrants, people is ok and chill, some problems with nicaraguans and colombians, not a big deal. But usually we have a very welcoming culture if people respect our culture, people and nature.

+Silver Legion The level of English in Costa Rica is somewhat low-medium. Although if you are going to find many people who at least can understand English. Regarding immigrants in general are treated well. There is a problem with the immigrants coming from Nicaragua because there are many also many of them are illegal immigrants who come to demand government aid (I have no problem with Nicaraguans but at least in the Costa Rican population there are some negative thoughts towards Nicaraguans but That is another big issue, but as I said, the treatment of immigrants is good and more if they come to contribute to the country

Nicaragua needs its own video. Theres Toltec influence to the western coast, the Pelas family is allegedly of Italian decent, the Chinese diaspora there, and even the arabic ranch that people unfortunately label all as turks even though they dont speak a lick of Turkish, and the high German concentration to the middle of the country.
Regarding Panama you are very wrong. Panama has the older colonial cities of not only Central America but also South America. Panama is one of the oldest countries of Latin America. Panama is NOT mostly mestizo - Panama is mostly TRIracial(African, Spanish and Native) up to 60 % I would say. Panama has after one of the largest authentic mullatoe populations of Latin America around 25-35 % of the population. Whites make around 20 %, natives 5%, fully blacks like 5 % too. Panama is by far the most diverse country of Latin America racially speaking but unlike the other Central American countries....the Afro descendant of Panama is NOT an enclave but 95 % of it has mixed and evolve in Panama for over 400 years. I need you to get it together sir! Racially, historically and culturally Panama has nothing in common with Central America. Panama has a lot in common with the atlantic coast of Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic.

It would have been nice if you would have included the Afro-Guatemalan people that reside in Livingston in order to represent it thoroughly. The only comment that I have to mention concerns about the, possibly unintentional, biased approach about the events occurred in Guatemala between the early sixties until now. Those involved political, economical and sociological complexities that underpassed the frame exposed in this infographic material. I highly recommend the works of Francisco Villagrán Kramer, Héctor Gramajo, Ramiro Ordóñez-Jonama, Rachel M. McCleary, David Stoll, Carlos Sabino, Hugo Maúl, Steve Hecht and Dan Hagerdorn, amongst others. By the way, congratulations by the effort! By making such kind of synthesis about a region so diverse like Central American I must declare my personal recognition.
Central America didn't "gain independence" from Mexico
Central American Federation simply refused to be a part of any mexican empire after the break up of New Spain
Mexico sent Guatemalan troops who supported the idea of a Mexican empire but got beaten back after which the capital of the federation was moved to El Salvador
Mexico itself was split on how to govern their country having also just split from Spain so they quit any attempts to forcefully annex the Federation but offered an open invitation to any Central American region that wanted to join them

Then Guatemala didn't exist. Look at the name, the New Spain Viceroyalty had it's capitol in Mexico City, the thing is that the name changed when New Spain became independent to Mexico (Guatemala, El Salvador, etc. kept their name). It's like saying that Tenochtitlán and Mexico City are not the same place.
Guatemala is a Mexican name (Nahuatl), and saying that it only existed when it was name that way would be wrong.
Guatemala was part of New Spain, the name Captaincy of Guatemala was due because it was a military headquartera, but it belonged to New Spain where the viceroy had authority over that territory (and southwards to Costa Rica).
The fact is that the wars for independence were fought mainly in actual Mexico, and even in some parts of California, Tejas (Texas) and New Mexico (that included Arizona).
The treaty for which New Spain became independent from Spain was "El Tradado de Córdoba," signed by Juan O'Donojú, Chief in Charge of New Spain.
But even if someones says that Central America is not included in that treaty, they signed in to belong to the Mexican Empire of Iturbide (Panama not included because it belonged to Colombia, before the U. S. support of rebels to secede from Colombia).
Guatemala is not a Mexican name. Guatemala is a Mesoamerican name, because that name was given by the Aztec, not by Mexicans.
Rnld There was an election after independence about whether to stay a part of Mexico or become an independent state and 80% of municipalities voting yes 10% voting no and 10% voting on whatever the rest of the municipalities decided, the 10% that voted no was from El Salvador and the mexican army was sent there and fought a battle that the salvadorans lost, it wasn't until next year that Central America voted again when the Iturbide empire fell and this time voted no, that's why Central America's independence was in 1822 and not 1821 like Mexico's. But even then the vote was political, the average population didn't care enough about being a different country, it was the same political divide that ended up breaking the central american republic at the end.

Why completely brush over Nicaragua? Nicaragua is the LARGEST Republic in Central America. Interesting fact is half of the country was part of the British empire, which is why English (and mostly creole) is an official language in Nicaragua. The majority spoken in the RAAN and RAAS regions in Nicaragua. The country has a large Mestizo-mix population, but also has a fairly large number of European, African, and Indigenous people (Matagalpa, Sumo, Rama, Miskito, etc.). Nicaragua is unique in that groups related to the Maya to the North, and Inca to the South, both reached there at their extreme reach in respective directions. The Carribean coast is where the majority of Amerindian and African descendant people live. The latter which is very connected to their Jamaican roots. Bluefields, Nicaragua IS known as the reggae capital of Central America. In certain mountain regions, there are a lot of German descendants due to the incentives given for coffee and Tabaco farms back in the day. Arabs, mostly Palestinians, because of the brotherhood the Sandinistas have with them, so much so that at one point in the 80s corrupt Israelis fled the country for their involvement with the Somoza regime and the new government overthrew that Dictatorship. On the Caribbean coast, a lot of British, Jamaican and Chinese descendants due to trade routes. The Chinese mostly came in the 1800s for trade and a lot decided to stay while originally trying to make it to California during the Gold Rush era. A lot more fascinating things for anyone wanting something from Nicaragua, but seeing it was skipped in the video. The video is a hard thumb down for me.

Most places don’t even mention Garifuna. Guatemala seems to put Garifuna under native language so maybe they’re mixing Garifuna with Natives in the racial group. Makes no sense. Should be separate
You forgot nicaragua. Nicaragua actually were 2 different regions. The eastern part was english and the west being spanish. And the official language in the eastern part is english creole. Similar to belize.

I'd say honduras is the most diverse, and since I have visited honduras it's mostly like this. Africans are near the North eastern coast, the native tribes of the mosquitia are on the eastern coasts, the Europeans are usually in the North central area the provinces of santa Barbara etc. The mestizos are everywhere else lol.

I'm from Belize. I have heard stories of my ancestors with the surname "Leslie" coming from Roatan.
Before the Bay Islands became part of Honduras .The Creole culture of the Bay Islands was more similar to that of neighboring black Caribbean English speaking islands . As well as Creole culture on San Andres and Providencia . Belize has more Creoles and a Garífuna minority.The Honduras coast has Garífuna culture .The culture of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica:Limon ,etc is more Creole : Jamaican ;as well as the Creole who were brought to Panama to build the Panama Canal: Jamaican and to a lesser extend people from Barbados .

Yes specifically around the matagalpa region a lot of European last names my family was originally from Brazil & migrated to the region in the 30s to start a coffee farm there similar to the Germans

Curiosity: John MacCain was actually born in Panama. He only has american citzenship because he was born in an American territory that does not exist anymore. It makes it very interesting as the 2008 election was the first in which neither of the candidates were born on the mainland USA, with Obama being from Hawaii (and even more funny how people questioned Obama's nationality, when it was in fact MACCAIN who wasn't born in the US proper).
He's an American citizens because he's the son of American citizens. Everyone who is the son/daughter of an American citizen can claim American citizenship. McCain did not born in an American territory, other than the US embassy any part of Panama belong to the US, nor even the Canal Zone which was still part of Panama but under US administrarion.
