enjoyed your viddy. thanks for intro the fibre pen - that's easier then electro plating I guess. maybe a bit more thinner or something to glass out the paint. you are a doer and that is a blessing to us all.

Thanks, Chris. This post means a lot to me as I'm currently struggling a bit with my paint finish (as I did on this model). I hope everyone keeps giving me some constructive feedback so I can improve my restorations. Thanks again, this gave me some motivation to tackle the issues I'm having.

  • @nascargas

Just a note that you may actually be able to address. The small tab forward of the dash board is actually the "front suspension". Properly and gently bent downward and the front end will sit a skosh higher than it does now. This is how Lesney first envishioned the car as most full sized sedans did sit slightly nose high. The rear also has a small bit of suspension however the rear trailer hook pinched between the body and base plate do not allow for much movement.
Ive considered glueing a small spring between the hood and front interior tab to keep the "suspension" pliable. Something to consider.
This is one of my grail old time matchbox cars. I have one that was crushed when I found it. I keep it to use in a junkyard dio.
As usual your job is on point. Nice work!

      @nascargas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MatchboxRestoration glad I can be of help. I just noticed this by taking apart the S n S Ambulance. I noticed the tab watching your video.
Some of the original Lesneys actually have separate plastic springs such as the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. Those tend to snap from being brittle.
      Anyhow...keep up the great work!

Now you can safely grind down or cut the screw to size. When you unscrew it from the fixture it should remove any light burrs. 😎👍

When i first started painting diecast cars, I used to get paint result like this - rough surfaces even after clear. I was spraying too thin coats and from too far; the paint particles were half dry before they reach the surface. Now I make every coat a wet coat. Meaning the car must look like it is completely wet. This solved my surface issues and the cars shiny and reflect light amazing now.

If you paint your doors laying down The colour Will not be exact because your car is level and your doors are laying down you’re shooting your paint downward and you are painting your car level The paint direction won’t be the same I hope this makes sense as gravity will pull your paint different ways that’s why a painter painting cars doors standing up instead of laying down I hope this makes sense good luck in the future you are doing an amazing job and I love your videos

A lot of people saying the paint needs sanding, and you could improve it that way, but I think the problem was with the spraying and that's what you need to practice. If the paint is too thick or sprayed from too great a distance, the droplets will be almost dry by the time they hit the car and won't form a smooth layer (the orange peel effect that people are talking about is often more of a chemical problem).

Looks good. You might want to give the body a light sanding before you paint, and you could polish it as well. Then after the paint has cured, give it another polishing. You can also polish it after the clear coat has fully cured, too. That'll get rid of the orange peel and rough looking texture. Still, it looks much better than what you started with!

You find it if you look for "fibre pen". It's typically used to clean electric contacts, but works for this purpose too.

Depends what you were going for here, I would have spent some time on the casting, sanding smooth, this would have given you a better paint job. But if the factory were happy with it perhaps so were you.

I like this and wish I could do same or better. New Hot Wheels have very glassy paint jobs. How to do so fine??? Also a Pontiac in Ferrari red kind of grates me. I need that on my Matchbox Ferrari not on Pontiac! Silvery light blue would be better. I had a GTO Pontiac 1966 that color. Thanks again from Thailand

    • @MatchboxRestoration

It's called a "Fibre Pen" or "Fibre-tip Pen". Just make sure you clean the model afterwards because the pen leaves a lot of small particles in the small corners.

I think you should use an electropolish setup for removing oxidation and rust, look at baremetalhw videos for instructions, he also has a zink plating tutorial but you generally don't need that for matchbox.
I also saw this video, the guy uses a sonic cleaner to clean up the parts but most importantly restore the paint to it's original tint for color matching.
