I use my mother's trick: lay a soaker hose on the top of the chicken coop roof. Run a trickle of water through the hose. The water cools the roof and drips off of the lower edge of the roof. In your coop, the hose would create a steady drizzle in front of the hardware cloth door and evaporates the whole time. We were in Texas, so it was dry. Basically, you turn the coop into a giant evaporative cooler. I don't know if it would work as well in Florida or someplace more humid. But when it's hot and dry - it's perfect! It only takes a few gallons at a slow drip to keep them cool all night.

You may have saved the life’s of my chickens with the “chicken air conditioner”, I did all the other measures but had not seen this tip. I’m located 17 miles north of Mexico and it has been over 100 F this past week and will continue in to this week. Already have the Home Depot industrial fan and just put water jugs in the freezer….thank you!

It’s been 100 plus for over a week and tomorrow is suppose to hit 115… I’ve been hosing down the run 2-3 a day, also freezing water bottles and adding them into their water container (with electrolytes)and of course frozen melons. We have a fan on the outside of the coop trying to keep the air flow going in the run. The top of the coop is open and covered with hardware cloth for circulation. Short of running A/C in the coop I think we have done all we can. Fingers crossed they all make it through this heat wave! Thanks for the tips 😉

we lost a lot of birds this year in texas. my friend who owns a feed store told me to add a fan and misters that run for 30 minutes 3 times a day. 12, 3 and 5. it got my gals through months of 100 degree dry temps. lots of deep shade helps too

I like to run the hose on a slow drip or trickle in a low spot in the shaded part of the yard. My chickens love to walk through the cold water puddles to cool off.

My dad installed a small fan in our chicken coop because it was over 100°F in the coop before the fan. Now, when we turn the fan on, the coop cools off a lot faster. Also, sometimes I lock our chickens outside and I gently hose them off. They really enjoy that

Our chickens like to hang out in slightly dried out mud muddles and to stand in the kiddie pool that is filled with a couple inches of water. When the temp gets above 110 we have a dog kennel in the house or the glass enclosed shower so they can be in the air cond

I did lose a beautiful Silkie to heatstroke last week. I am using the frozen jug of water for my two remaining girls that are outside. I also put an ice cube in each water dish (a 3" auto-water cup) plus some in the 13 gallon container. 3 other Silkies had to be rehomed because they turned out to be roosters. Now I've got 4 one-week-old bantams growing in the garage because it's not really good to only have 2 chickens. Chickens are very social. The babies are doing okay, although I keep a close eye because at times they are panting. I keep dipping their beaks in water when I see that. Because I live in SoCal, my coop is inside the run. The entire plywood shed roof is elevated on sticks with chicken wire over the open flat part (as secondary predator proofing). Not only do I have the top open, but there are vent windows near the top of the back side, and the front is a double set of double doors. The inside set are hardware cloth screen doors and the outside set are plywood doors. The plywood doors stay open 24/7 unless there's a storm. It's heartbreaking to lose an animal to the heat, but it does happen. Mine died in the middle of the night.

We put a sunshade up to give the hens a bit more of a break - the afternoon heat was just radiating off of the garage creating a tunnel of heat between the garage & coop. So the sun shade was VERY "cheep" and made a big difference.

Hello Oak Abode. My favorite method of maintaining a sustainable pantry and stockpiling items long term for the whole family and the family dog and the family cat is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every type of food storage methods and technology available, both old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone. Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, I had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for the family and I

In addition to these things we put drip line in our coop with the fan sprinkler heads about every 5 ft, the drip timer goes off at 1pm so hottest part of the day they all get misted and the ground gets cooled off. They’ll all run and do a cool dust bath right after. On the drip line i also put other sprinkler heads that shoot a stream and drilled holes holes in the sides of 18-20” plastic pot bottoms that also go off at 1pm with the sprinkler system and fill up with cold water and create a cool shallow trough for them. There scattered around and they like to stand in cold the water. If you install the drip- just make sure u run it for a while as the first water to come out is hot from the sun

Hi! Love your channel! I freeze solo cups of water to put in their water it tends to keep the water cooler longer than ice cubes. I also switch out a couple frozen jugs each day during the warm days. I don't think it's that much extra work...you get into a routine. I absolutely adore my girls and would be so upset if one died because of something that I could have done that takes an extra 5 minutes. That said, we are fortunate enough to have a fridge/freezer in our garage, and does help a ton...since I don't like to mix our stuff with chicken poop😂 I am currently having an issue keeping ants out of the feed...it's in a metal container. Any suggestions?

I always see people on the forums giving their chickens frozen corn. Frozen corn is a huge no no in the summer! Corn makes chickens generate heat and should only be given in the winter/fall. It can make an already bad situation much worse.
When we go through heat waves I give my girls frozen peas, carrots, grapes and watermelon, and I put electrolytes in one of their many waterers.
Also, if they’re showing signs of really struggling I’ll fill up a tote with cool (not cold/freezing) water and I’ll dunk the girls one by one up to their armpits. But you have to be carful that it’s not too cold or you could give them a heart attack. On the days when I know it’s going to be extremely hot, I’ll fill up the tote in the morning and leave it in the sun so it’s the perfect temperature by the afternoon. Some of them love it, others not so much but it helps a lot. I also do this right before bed with my big bottom girls 😆

Mine do this too! I didn't know it was an actual thing for Rhode Island Reds to do! Haha Do you know why they do that?
I'm going to letting a water hose slowly drizzle in an area today and see how it goes. Thanks for commenting, I've learned something new about my chickens.
Also, my chickens prefer the powder from their food rather than the whole pellets. Sometime it didn't seem like they were eating enough so i would crush some up and they'd go crazy. Is this a thing too or are mine spoiled? Haha. I stopped crushing it up cause after all if they are hungry they will eat. Hard not to spoil them though since I only have 2.

The pecking order in our little flock has made "restrict movement" essential during this heat wave (102°), because our egg-laying hen is bossy and territorial (she will even knock our rooster off the windowsill 😂).
Even during the night ,temperatures are around 80°, so I put a frozen jug in each coop & they sleep next to it. I freeze bottles of water and poke tiny holes in them so that the frozen water is dripping into their regular drinking water throughout the day, I keep a shallow tray full of water as well.
I don't really like it because it looks janky, but I have an oscillating fan with an extension cord blowing between my three coops and the chickens are all making good use of it and it makes me very happy. They are still panting unfortunately because the humidity is so bad I think, but I check on them every 5 hours.
There is a fancier "emergency AC" tutorial on TH-cam that shows cutting a hole in a *cooler*, filling it with ice, and then putting a 4" duct + fan so that you can control where the air goes a little better, and I'm going to try that with a couple of styrofoam coolers since I don't want to destroy my plastic ones.
Anyways that was my essay lol, one of our hens died from stress and the incoming heat so I am all about keeping the ones I have now safe ❤ these birds were kind of dumped on me so now I want to make sure they're okay

Add frozen bottled water to your waterers. It has really helped mine. In summer months or hot days, we add them in the waterers and change about every 3 to 4 hours as needed. Put it back in freezer. We do this during hot days and no longer have any problems with our chickens getting overheated. They always have "ice water" and they also have a fan in the corner of the coop on high up in the ceiling as it is large. Anything for my feather babies. Hope this helps someone. Keep your freezer full of frozen water bottles.

We're in Arizona and were above 120 F for a few days this summer. We have an emergence AC in the coop, During the day we run a mister. We also make sure to give them a foot bath during the day which is a tub with a few bricks inside. We fill the tub with ice water and the chicken stand on the bricks to cool their feet. Once a day they get cold treats (frozen watermelon, cold cucumber and fozen peas are favourites) and we try to provide shade with shade cloth. That being said the heat in AZ is brutal during summer and even with all precautions we lost one of our young girls a few weeks ago which made me really sad.

I went to Thrive-Market at your suggestion & found it wayyy over-priced -- am I missing something? I've been buying organic/healthy groceries for some time now, but wow!
I'm considering an A-frame chicken-tractor for my first structure for strength & simplicity. What does everyone think? Is that a practical way to go?

Thank you for this information... MAY BE A SILLY QUESTION BUT I owned horses and my last 30 yr old passed so i have a stall that i would like to turn into a chicken coop.. my question is are flies a major issues, I ask that bc no matter what we did fly mask, spray my heart would break knowing how annoying it was for them.. Yes stalls were cleaned twice a day... If so do you have any solutions

I have an open air coop that works for us. Its been 115° all week here and there is no way me or my neighbor could keep our chickens in an enclosed coop where we live

I got 1 cookoo maran that pants a lot more than the other. Even on roost bar at night with coop temp in 70’s. Thinking she may be drama queen or real issue?

I spray a section of their cage, not coop down with water as well as putting a cat box tub full of water I . I’ve seen them try and bath in the west direct and walk in the tub.I’m in California and we just went thru a 2 week period of 106+ temps. Gruesomely frustrating. I only have 3 2 year olds but they all made it….

I had bought 2 chick's, and kept them in my home for 4 months, and I put them out in my wood barn, and 4 days later a Mom bear ripped the door open and along with her 2 cubs ate my chickens. This made me very sad. I'm not going to raise anymore.

I wet a portion of the ground and sometimes they immediately dust(mud?) bath in it, they immediately go to it.
it's over 110 here been stressful they're only 6 weeks but they're m7ch happier outside. I give them electrolytes and ice water regularly. I freeze a whole bottle for them and rotate it. they like frozen grapes once they realize what it is, frozen canned corn top

I wish I could be astonished by how many people have lost chickens due to heat stroke but I should know better by now. Step 1, plan for all weather contingencies and take appropriate steps, including if you have to house them inside a basement or other structure. It's nauseating that this happens, you have a responsibility to take care of your animals. If you don't like it, too bad, grow up.

The chicken that droops her wings before the other chickens is not a "drama queen". That chicken is more sensitive to the weather which may also go to an underlying health issue.
