Shows why the Harley engine is so timeless. You can take it apart and repair it quickly with a simple set of hand tools, and you're good for another 100,000 miles.

If you rotate the piston to TDC on the compression stroke the spring pressure is off the valve springs. Eliminates the problem with wonky removal of the rocker box.

Skipped cam timing, oil breather gear end play and measuring for correct shim on breather gear.

Contacted H-D and it is the second ring that has the dot. The top ring has NO dot and square edges so it can be put on any way up. The second ring is shaped and so must go on with the dot facing up. To see how it is done properly watch the H-D engine rebuilds by Tatro Machine.

Outstanding video Jim! Your instructions and pace are concise and right to the point. I also found your teaching style to be one that allows your audience to be relaxed but dialed in at the same time. (My opinion anyway) Thanks for all three videos. Very well done! That first year Evo looks like new at the end!

The studs you show being installed are 1987 1/2. These are to be installed with that shoulder up, not down. There is a tool to be used if you want but you must not use wrench or ratchet, only air or electric impact tool so as to not off-load and risk bending during install. Length of protrusion from gasket surface to be 5.670 to 5.770. Stud threads are oversize to fit tight in crankcase and standard machine fitment on other end. Put them in upside down as you have can cause one of several unhappy conditions. 3 evo studs are as follows. 84 1/2 to late 85, late 85 to 88, 88 on. 85 to 88 manual shoes this info on pg 3-15. Pg 3-40 fig 3-48 shows what you did wrong. Studs with proper interference fit in crankcase are oiled before install and if little loose are treated with loctite stud n bearing mount. No high strength loctite is used any where in these motors. Runs the risk of peeling threads. I dispute your assy methods as I am just now into my 187k 88 evo 1 owner evo motor. Doing heads ,replacing first time cam and tappets, and inspect on oil pump and drive shaft

All looks good and is right for what you did do. But heres why this engine would be useless to me and why I would take it all apart again. When the cylinder jugs were off and when the cam cover and cam were removed I would have grabbed the shaft end and checked for up and down play and in and out play then I would have grabbed the rods and slid the back and forth and then side to side and up and down for crank pin roller bearing play. I would have done those things even if the engine was still in the bike frame. Why build a house on a cracked foundation? Your work you did is good Jim but why were these major importantces ignored?

That's a great question - it can vary depending on the shops you have available or if you're doing the work yourself. We recommend getting in contact with your local shop for the best answer on local pricing. Our tech team can also help provide some answers - give them a shout at 1-800-969-7501
