As a fellow ref, I don't disagree with you. Judging from the Tortorellas gesturing, I'm guessing they tried to sell it by saying it would have been boarding even if icing had been waived. not here to say what the call should have been, but here is the rule in the nhl rulebook Rule 41 - A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee. There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule. Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging.”

Its a boarding penalty not a roughing call after the whistle you can board somebody before during nd after the whistle this has to be flyers home announcing.
We the referees for this game have decided that instead of being accountable for our mistake of not blowing the whistle quickly enough, we’re going to deflect blame to the player for our screw up since we don’t have the emotional maturity to own our mistakes.
Where are the Bruce Hoods and John Damicos? The NHL is sure scraping the talent barrel these days. The whistle was late and this was a combination of a late whistle and an awkward fall into the boards.
I don’t see the issue? Hughes has got to protect himself there? He’s putting 1 hand towards to puck, he’s engaged in the play, a hit is warranted there
I don't either; it was shoulder to shoulder--a clean hit but from what I saw, I did not see an arm raised either from the referee, indicating a d-zone icing. I don't understand the call here either.

Another reason why this call was so bad and few people are mentioning it. The boarding call by the NHL rule book is a hit from behind. Hathaway hit him in the chest. By rule, boarding actually does not even apply.
The icing call was definitely blown, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a boarding penalty any day of the week. He didn't get boarding because it was called icing...he would have got that even if it was waved off. Boarding that results in an injury is going to be a major every time. You can, and Torts argued that it's somehow up to Hughes to protect himself, but the responsibility lies on the attacking player, not the player being fouled. That's the rule.

I hated his guts for a long time because, while I always liked and respected his no bullshit, tough as nails, no excuses old-fashioned way of coaching, his obnoxiousness took away from his character. I couldn't stand him. But he's really not much like that anymore. Look at him now compared to when he coached the Rangers. He's mellowed out a lot. That said, he had every reason to blow his top tonight and be as pissed as he was. I was right there with him.
Even after reviewing / discussing, they get it wrong. Officiating in all sports is horrendous these days.
Honestly in some cases coaches and players should be able to rant off on officials without the fear of getting fined or suspended. While they may not cost teams games, what we have seen over the years is that it's getting worse every year. This call right here helps confirm it.
Ref should be suspended for this. This was the whole point of the rule change for icing. What are we doing here?
You are taught to play until the whistle. Linesman never blew the whistle, play is live. The official created the situation. And admitted no culpability or blame. That was not a penalty and it was not a game misconduct and it certainly was not a major. And Luke should have had a match penalty for embellishment.
The officiating in the NHL is approaching a joke.
When ISN'T John Tortorella Furious?
Oh! I can answer that - Torts was very happy After his CBJ team swept Tampa Bay 2019 playoffs!
@@TheFoolintherainn Probably. For about ten minutes.
@@edvadojunk I like Torts! And I like the world's only triple gold coach- Mike Babcock.
Newer fans have no idea what goes into this game.
The passion, the crazy hormones.. you're not going to find somebody sane who wants to get bashed into the boards or have 4-in vulcanized rubber discs flying at their heads at 90 mph! Lol!
So I'll just ask fans be careful because they don't actually know what's going on behind the scenes.
Coaching hockey players is one of the most fun and toughest things a coach can do. It's a very dangerous sport. The rest of this stuff is a sideshow.
Those of us who are in locker rooms, rink ratz keep our mouths shut. Because the most of the embarrassment would go toward the players not coaches.
I can't believe how they took down Mike Babcock in a boy's gossiping hen house
Fans don't know the fact that when hockey players go over the Canadian border, border patrol can take their phones and go through them any day.
George parros in the player safety committee job is actually to monitor players behavior both on and off the ice. They could go through phones.
Canada violates "privacy rights" all the time - they don't have privacy.
So obviously these hockey fans have never gone into Canada! But they're going to take down a triple gold coach?!
It's happened to many of us driving to Alaska.
These coaches know not to expect less than the players deserve, because they will have settled for less than they expected.
The officiating in all sports has gone into the crapper.
Years ago a lot more contact, different game now!We need more good hip checks, open ice clean checks, razzle dazzle, enter at your own risk!
That is a clean hit all day. Couldn't have been more clean..... but..... because Hathaway... because it's The Flyers... and because it's a hit on a star player....... 5 minutes. NHL ref logic.
Sous forte recommandation de Bettman !
Protèger ses franchises hockey

not here to say what the call should have been, but here is the rule in the nhl rulebook
Rule 41 - A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who
checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that
causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or
dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with
the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the
application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player
applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless
position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in
determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the
circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put
himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously
with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be
considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when
applying this rule.
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an
obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or
impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In
other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be
treated as “charging.”
Pretty sure boarding also has to be a hit from behind
@@rossrobertson674 I copied that from the NHL rulebook, makes no mention of being from behind
@@nolane3972 I just never seen a penalty for boarding when it wasn't from behind, even in the EA Sport NHL video games u only get boarding on hits from behind on the boards
@@nolane3972 I just never seen a penalty for boarding when it wasn't from behind, even in the EA Sport NHL video games u only get boarding on hits from behind on the boards
@@rossrobertson674 I've seen plenty of boarding calls take place that didn't involve hitting the player in the back.
I want to know what world the linesman was in when he thought about waiving that off. Luke had a noticeable step on both Flyers players. I don't blame him for letting up there expecting an icing.
Can't blame Hathaway for running over him either.
Boarding ??? He him from the front side !!! It was a clean hit. What a joke even with video replay they get it WRONG, what a joke man !
Hughes needs to wake up before he’s hurt bad, twice now getting fucken bundled not expecting a hit
What was there to punish Hathaway?
It's hits like that is the reason here is a no touch icing rule. The officials screwed up big time there.
thats a century too late for that whistle on the icing
Ranger fan here. No penalty in my opinion. Referee blew the call. Hathaway playing to the whistle and the whistle was blown late.
"Icing happen when the puck come down. Bang! You know, nobody there. My arm go comes up , the play stop then start up." - Denis Lemieux
Sorry?
LOL the reflection at 0:11 makes it seems like a ghost randomly appears and is wrestling with the Devils player in the scrum.
Minor league linesman literally blew the call.
Hathaway was penalized for “playing hockey while named Hathaway”
30 years ago that wouldn’t have even been a minor.
That's very awkward to see a former Caps pushing another former Caps into a former Wolverine when I'm a fan of both :/
That's not boarding
Where are the Bruce Hoods and John Damicos? The NHL is sure scraping the talent barrel these days. The whistle was late and this was a combination of a late whistle and an awkward fall into the boards.
Yea or a scumbag making a dirty hit knowing dam well it was gonna be icing
100% clean hit!
When did Angel Hernandez get an NHL ref job?
Hath and Torts are Beutys with real character personality not robot ol school all the way needs more of players and coaches like them !!
That's furious? Thought that was rather tame by his standards.
Tortorella should be furious at Hathaway. Hughes was vulnerable with that blind check from behind. 5min was the right call for boarding
It's boarding whistle or not. Hughes heard the whistle why not Hathaway ?
Because the whistle was just after contact . Hughes was assuming that he heard a whistle
Nice to see someone else recognize the hit as boarding. Everyone else seems focused on the icing aspect of the play, they ignore where the players are in relation to the boards when contact is made.
Refreee needs a game misconduct
this call is the exact scenario with Cale Makar and Mcann in the playoffs. you cant hand out majors and ejections because you dont know how to whistle a play in time. god awful officiating in sports these days and it's rigging games.
That looked like hockey to me.
He should be in AHL until he can keep head up
1 blow the whistle, 2 pertect yourself at all times this is not PeeWee hockey, 3 because he got mmmmm hurt and fell that was the call cause he fell and looked like he got hurt, 4 refs have to realize fans come to the game to see the players and not the refs, 5fans are getting turned off because of these types of calls.
Luke Hughes scored the game winner in OT.
Yeah.... because of terrible reffing. The refs gift wrapped that game for The Devils.
he was clearly pushed, like what ?
I'm watching this with no sound. Was it icing? When did the whistle go?
After Hathaway initiates contact.
Is that not a boarding? Dangerous place relative to the boards
You ever notice how consistent well run organizations never Hire John Totarella?
Tortorella showed a lot of restraint here. He must be doing counciling and behavioral therapy.
I honestly don't even know why they have video review anymore. They get more calls wrong now than they get right it seems like.
I've watched very few well officiated games in the NHL this year. Refs have been the most pathetic I've seen in a very long time.
Torts is 100% correct on this, as are the announcers. The officials blew the call with the late whistle. They screwed up and caused the entire mess.
Normally i disagree with torts antics and coaching ability but for once i agree with torts being pissed off on the refs on this one whistle should have been blown earlier and did i not see a push from siegenthaler? Like a boarding call.... really.....
The refs and the idiots are trying to protect their star Hughs player and making a statement. All of these refs should be docked there pay for this game.
Imagine an announcer blaming the officials for a players stupidity
I'm a Devils fan and not a fan of torts or his antics. But that was the wrong call. They usually blow the whistle when the puck crosses the blue line. They suck. They sucked last year and this year they suck even more.
Luke Ends up scoring the GWG
Look Im a flyers fan, and hathaway is a bit of a goon this year; but this is the least of his goonery this season.
Another reason why this call was so bad and few people are mentioning it. The boarding call by the NHL rule book is a hit from behind. Hathaway hit him in the chest. By rule, boarding actually does not even apply.
A linesman take responsibility for their screw up and admit it? Nah, screw up harder by reviewing it and standing by the call. What a joke
a clean hit. This is not ice ballet or figure skating.
No it's not. LOL.
another call refs did not want to take responsibility
Not boarding. How embarrassing for these refs. And I am a Rangers fan so unbiased.
yea just like when trouba swung nd hit his stick at the detroit players head 2 days ago nd not even a penalty was called lol, nd it was an elbow to the head

Boarding is dirty, smart guy
Nice to see torts mellowed out a bit over the years
Look at the body language of the linesman after Hughes is down. He knows.
istn that the same ref from the Bills-Eagles game?
Players don't know how to protect themselves along the boards anymore.
That's a b******* penalty considering he was pushed into the player.
