  • 16 years old, 200,000 miles, time to restore this machine I’ve had since I’ve made a million memories in. Pause the video on spots that may move too quickly to read and ask any questions you may have and I’ll explain further or get you a how-to link. I just like to show the world what can be done at home with some motivation and a vision.
Music by Pink Floyd, song “Coming Back to Life” off their Division Bell album. All musical content is theirs. If you don’t like it, I don’t care.

And thank you. You could always get another and make it your own. Imagine if I put in some footage of when my son’s mom was pregnant, then my infant son in the back seat, watching him grow up for 13 years... that would be a tear jerker!

Well done. I'm an 03'Durango 5.9 R/T owner myself now almost a year. Was a dream vehicle for me when I was a kid. I'm a few days a way from my 41st. Birthday and have thought about a few projects to update things here and there but you definitely breathed some new life into those ideas. I'm the 3rd owner of mine but I got her with 109,000miles and zero leaks period. I did a complete fluid change and tune up and a newish ecu and have had all my expectations of this vehicle as a kid be realized as an adult. I'm rambling but thanks. You did an amazing job. I hope my eventual work will come out as good as yours.

Lewis Martínez that’s exactly what I was hoping to achieve with this video! So many people hate the music (Pink Floyd, one of the most famous rock bands in the world and a fitting song), or they hate that I didn’t explain every step in slow motion. I’m not a TH-camr, just a fellow DIY’er and don’t have the time to film long how to videos. It’s all been done before. But the end result... I show how to get there and what the 1st gen Durango could look like so I’m glad you feel inspired.

I have a 99 SLT 5.2 with 219k on her and everyone that knows me knows how I love my Bessy. I bought her from a friend and she already had some "custom" work done lol. So she's sentimental to me as well. I always joke and say I'm gonna restore her when I run into money but watching this video reminds us just how much you can accomplish if you just invest a little work, ingenuity and passion into something. It doesn't always take lots of cash. (Although that also helps TREMENDOUSLY LOL) Anyways you've inspired me. I am absolutely going to set forth on giving old Bessy a facelift. Thank you. Looks amazing, but those hood scoops... To each their own I guess. Love the color and the wheels look good like that too. I have an 01, but haven't decided what I want to do with paint. I have already had some peal coat woes, so who knows.

Attuned yeah the hood scoop era was when I bought the Durango and thought it would be cool. I debated removing them for this restomod, but decided to keep them for old time sake. Some love it, some hate it.

Man I can't tell you how much I can appreciate all the work you've put in...from the small details to the custom fabrication. That's one bada$$ DD. I've had my '00 5.9 4x4 for several years and only recently started adding mods and upgrades. Of course the links you've added for the most part are expired but I have found some if the parts just searching keywords. I especially like the custom grill. Interested in making another on commission? Lol

Thanks, I’m glad it gave you some inspiration!! As for the grill, you’ll just need to make one yourself ;)
Look for a billet grille on eBay and go from there ;)

Ahh... very good project and liked the tunes ! I just got an 02 Durango R/T today. July 2021. Looking around for info and ideas etc... Mainly to get into the woods for camping , hiking, trout fishing etc...maybe a bed setup ??? Or to do a cargo trailer as a small C.T.Camper ???

    • @Cpennington57
      @Cpennington57  3 ปีที่แล้ว

If it’s just you, you can fit an air mattress up to a queen size in the cargo area. All seats lay flat (if you have and don’t need the third row seating, remove it). If you have more than a couple people, you may need to utilize that second row seating, so I’d do things like this:
Camping trailer with rack and roof top tent on the trailer (I’ve always wanted to build one of these), or a RTT on the roof of the Durango and store everything you need in the cab. I use mine for fishing, camping, and pulling a boat/utility trailer. It’s not my daily, it’s my utility truck.
When my ex wife was preggo, we’d go on trips with roof top storage, rods attached to roof, small pop up tent outside for the dog and cat, and we’d sleep in the cab on a queen air mattress! Then my son was born, so for the first couple years, he’d sleep between us on the air mattress. Nowadays it’s just my 13 year old boy and I, so we keep all the gear in the cargo area and use a traditional tent. An RTT would be cool, so would an off road camp trailer, but in a few years this will be his daily driver, so I’m done. I just posted an updated video a few weeks ago, btw. Try to find it on my channel.

Nice job!!!! You recommend a good forum. I just got me a 03 Durango R/T, was my father’s, it’s got a lot of wear and tear but I want to restore it!
    Again nice build!

hampton7c Dakota-Durango.com is where I often visit! And thank you so much man!! I recommend restoring it... totally worth it. There are so few true SUV’s anymore with solid frames. Everything is unibody nowadays except for a few like the 4Runner and Wrangler. I feel like I’m driving a brand new truck man. Wish I had the 5.9 but back then, they were hard to find! Good luck with your restoration!

I ordered all of my custom lettering from the site below. Keep in mind that vinyl lettering will not stick to the raptor liner! You’ll want to apply in to the vehicle, tape off with painters tape, carefully using a blade... cut around the letters. Be very careful. After the paint gets tacky (don’t let it fully dry), remove the tape with the tip of the blade or exactly knife. Be careful and pay attention !
      www.customvinyllettering.net/mobile/lettering/?source=google&gclid=CjwKCAjw3azoBRAXEiwA-_64Oqmj9rScQI8e7Jygf8cNnFH_l_7B1gyCcddtDAVgAsOmC-6j6aoQ1BoCqbEQAvD_BwE
I used a light bar/pod kit and designed my own brackets. You can order whatever lights you want, this is just an example. As for brackets, I mocked mine up on cardboard, traced out onto some scrap stainless steel, cut, sanded, primed, painted and installed. There is only one set of brackets for sale on the internet and they are like $50 on eBay, but I made my own. Try to look them up if you can’t make them yourself. They utilize two of the door gasket mounting holes and that’s it, no drilling into your roof! Underneath the edge of the light bar where it meets the windshield, I used 1/2 thick weather stripping. I’ll make a video of all this upon request!

BLACK Raptor Liner. (two liters covered the bull bar, roof rack, rear interior wheel well covers, all 4 interior rocker panel skids, bumper cover and lower cargo area cover like in video). Don’t confuse black Raptor Liner with tintable Raptor Liner. Tintable is made specifically for adding your own custom color (Dodge Destroyer Gray in my case), while black is already pre mixed in jet black and needs no added toner/color/base coat).
      U-POL Raptor Black Urethane... www.amazon.com/dp/B01CKE799I?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
8L TINTABLE Raptor Liner kit with spray gun. You will use 8 liters for the exterior, 2 liters for the interior. Watch videos on TH-cam for how to prep, mask, mix and apply! Be VERY careful to have a super clean/prepped surface. I shot mine at 60psi for a lightly course texture, shoot at 50psi for a medium texture and 40psi for a more course texture. Prep prep PREP.

Upol Raptor Liner makes pre made tint pouches that you mix into he tintable Raptor Liner (not made for BLACK Raptor Liner). You can also have your local automotive paint shop like PPG mix your favorite color. Get at least one quart, tell them what it’s for and leave out the “binder.” No reducer will be necessary, just the base coat color. The liner kit comes with hardener. Again, watch videos! Use your paint maker shop for supplies like true automotive prep tape, drop clothes, mixing containers, acetone for cleaning your paint gun, etc. you’ll fail using the typical interior wall painters tape, trust me.
Also purchase their “Grip” pre-paint spray on primer. It’s clear so don’t try to apply too heavy. Follow instructions. Specially made for hard to reach areas where sanding is difficult, and for plastic trim. Make sure your plastic trim is 100% clean of wax and protectant sprays or else the liner may peel up in that spot.
      U-Pol Products 0799 Grip#4... www.amazon.com/dp/B00397POFC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
As for the cargo area, I used quality interior 5/8 plywood. I removed the stock MDF panels, traced them onto the ply wood, cut and sanded. You’ll need to use some of your own ingenuity on this area of the truck as once the carpet is ripped out back there, you’ll see it’s not very level. You’ll figure it out or look at my video and figure out what I did. I was able to retain the OEM latches but needed ACE hardware hinges.
Torque wrench (make sure to tighten water pump, cylinder head, valve cover, and exhaust manifold bolts to OEM recommendations)! Look up videos online to see proper use of click style torque wrench

Paul Demercurio I’m at work and finally seeing this but when I get home I’ll get ya the tire size and lift info. The tires are the max size for stock suspension! I believe I did a 2.5” in the rear and 3.5” in the front to level it.
