Mazda 2003 Tribute Radio Removal Problem

  • Frustrating! It should take less than an hour to extract the old radio and put in a new one, in these years (2002 - 05 I think) Mazda Tribute. HOWEVER...the extraction keys don't work in some cases. It appears to be a common problem per the postings I've seen. This video shows how to get the bugger out. After over an hour of frustrating attempts and searches, I figured this out. I've got a new GoPro, and thought I'd share to help others avoid this mess. It's not hard!...but adds another 40 minutes. If the extraction keys don't work for you, give this a shot. Of course...it's easier if you add another set of hands. Good luck!

You, my man, are a genius! I too was getting highly pissed off trying to use those extraction tools. After defeating the removal process (thanks to your video), the remainder of the installation went smooth and quick and the sound is awesome! Thank you for sharing your experience.

I had bought the removal "tools" but they didn't work. Used your method and worked fine. Thanks! I was then able to repair my disappearing display digits.

Thank you!!! I've been working and cussing at this for 2 hrs and Crutchfield says the DIN tools will work with a little finesse. Such an easy fix!!

Thank you for sharing this. I was about to take a large drill to the old radio and start mucking around just to get in there. Looks like taking the dash apart will be a bit easier.

Thank you!! I too am changing the radio in 2004 for my daughter. What I thought would take 15 minutes took a few hours, because the tools I got with the stereo did not work..

I also had this issue! I ended up taking two long screw drivers and sliding them into either side of the radio, then prying it out. Not the best way of going about it, but it got the job done. I used a Metra harness adapter and single-DIN to double-DIN adapter for my Pioneer head unit afterwards. Beware of the Metra DIN adapter though, because there are no clips to hold the single-DIN unit into place. I ended up duct taping the metal plate that surrounded the new head unit to the plastic DIN adapter. Wire nuts would also be a good choice for matching the harness wires up to the head unit wires. I used butt connectors, and they were a pain in the butt (no pun intended).
Hope all went well with your installation!

Thank you. I fought it for almost an hour before I searched TH-cam and found your video. I bought a set up from Crutchfield also. They made it look so easy.....lol

Thank you for this video! I mistakenly thought the old radio removal would be the easy part. When I couldn't get it out I came back to TH-cam and found your video. Removing g the dash was easy.. The rest went well except that the frame is pretty loose so I may
need to go back and use screws or duct tape and make it more secure.

better videos are available. the removal tools that everyone is referring to a NOT the easiest to use, but if your inclined pay close attention to the pressure after inserting them if you do not feel the spring pressure then they are not in the correct location. I personally used 8 small Allen wrenches. I inserted each one in place of the 8 legs supplied by 4 "tools" . Using individual wrenches allows you to manipulate each one independently so you can feel the spring pressure being released as the wrench finds its proper place. once you have placed all 8 the unit virtually drops into your hand. you will notice that the pressure is not equal on all points but you will feel the spring action. if you don't feel this pressure tilt the wrench in towards the radio as it enters the holes for best alignment.

I wish I found this video before. The only way I could pull this thing out was carefully poking a flat screwdriver from both sides and push the pins.

I was having trouble using the tools on the right side of my radio. The left side appeared to be perfect since when I had the two tools installed on that side they would spring back if I pulled them outward and let go. The right side tools had no spring to them. What I think was happening is the ends of the tool were on the wrong side of the clip. What I ended up doing is angling the tools in toward the radio as I installed them and that got the tools on the outside of the spring clip. The tools worked perfectly after I did that. Before you pull the dash apart you may want to try this solution first.

I am trying to take my radio out to in my 2001 Mazda Tribune with the 4 tools but they go in all the way instead of clicking so my next question is the two screws at the top of the dash was size ratchet would I use?
