So basically Dad rock is the phenomena of continuing to listen to the acts that you grew up with... while you become a dad, and they continue to make music

Basically. I grew up in the late 2000s eaely 2010s. I grew up listening to Vampire Weekend. Their youthful college kids look was a big talking point then. Now, since 2019's Father of the Bride, they feel like dad rock to me.

I definitely learned about rock from my dad, he reared me on a steady diet of Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Jethro Tull, and as everyone has to go a little more extreme than there parents, he allowed me to blast Manson and A7F through the speakers of the family mini van when I hit puberty. The man understood. He knew I wasn't rebelling, but just trying to find the music that was mine, and he enjoyed quite a bit of it. He's always kept up with rock, while returning to favorites, so nothing ever shocked him or offended his sensibilities. To this day, we can turn turn the radio on to the same stations and both be happy.

It irritates me to see the media still trying to manipulate what people listen to. They still haven't reconciled with the fact that radio is dead. They can't completely control what people listen to anymore but their still trying to dictate whats "en vogue" and what's not.. People are not to be herded like sheep. People listen to what they want. Music is not just made for teenagers, radio is dead and listen to what you want not based on your age, but your ears.

I'm with you. If people were to guess what music I personally listen to based on my age (I'm in my 60's), they would nearly always be wrong. I listen to a dizzying array of stuff that's not only current (the more non-commercial, generally experimental stuff), but also old Cajun dance music, western swing, late-40's bebop jazz, post-bop, and other vintage music that predated my birth by decades or even centuries. Funny how my teenage daughter listens to more of what people would call "dad rock" than even I do (but still doesn't comprise most of what she listens to), and I didn't influence her to! In the '80s, a good friend simply told me that I have "left field" tastes (which, oddly enough, seems to be an actual genre nowadays).

The saxophone thing in the '80's was a revival of the saxophone thing from the late '50's/early 60's which came from the late '40's/early '50's paternal line of rock: r'n'b (the maternal line being country/bluegrass/rockabilly). The honkers and barwalkers were the fathers of rock and roll. Rudy Pompilli, Boots Randolph, King Curtis, Clifford Scott, Red Prysock, Sil Austin, Willis Jackson, Earl Bostic, Big Jay McNeely, etc. The list goes on through Maceo Parker, Bobby Keys, Dick Parry, Clarence Clemmons and on to whoever will come to fill their shoes tomorrow.

Beck is trying very hard to stay "in" with the young crowd. Just look at his last two albums. I guess it helps that he looks 20 years younger than he is, not unlike Paul Rudd.

I feel like when most people say "Dad Rock", they mean 70s 80s classic rock like Journey and Steely Dan, or hair metal bands. Alternative rock could get lumped in with it too since 90s teens are around 40 now, but because that sound stayed popular into the 2000s, it doesn't pass as "dad rock" nearly as much to me

0:23 You can tell a kid drew this when they were asked to draw someone in their forties and they thought, “You mean like a retired grandpa?”
And shouldn’t you feel ashamed if you put someone down for having a 20 year career, talking about it like it’s a bad thing? Although, I must agree that writing teenage love songs in middle age can be cringe if you really believe it. I mean, like Meatloaf, I suppose was up front about it being theatrical fiction at least.

30s is too young to be stereotypical "dads". Granted a 36 year old born in 1983 could be the father of a 19 year old (born in 2000) if they got a girl pregnant in high school, but it still seems too young to call them a stereotypical dad. Save it for guys at least 45!

  • @TylerMcConnell

Chuck Klosterman wrote a great essay on how someone is considered ancient in music at 30, but Hemingway told writers to never START until they're 30. Of course, that would mean "The Red Badge of Courage" never existed, but all in all... the cultural ethos backs this notion up. Although I do think it's manufactered and ridiculous. Both of them are. If you make awesome music at 40 or can write awesome literature in your 20s, then who's not going to enjoy great art -- no matter the age of the creator? LCD Soundsystem anyone? Maybe I'm losing my edge...

Nirvana sounded like Dad-Rock to me in Fall of 1991, a preppy rich kid who wanted to be part of our stoner punk group introduced it to us like it was the newest thing. I didn't watch MTV (family couldn't afford cable) or listen to top 40 commercial radio or read spin and nme. DGC couldn't PUSH it's product on me. the Industry couldn't tell me how great it was, so I heard Nirvana with out biased ears and pre-judgement and honestly I thought it it was too grungy ( like the word we were all being forcefed) and stoner rockish and was trying too-hard to be punk and indy (although indy wasn't a genre at that time) they had an overly produced and polished sound without the tightness of punk I listened to; I knew right away Nirvana wasn't for me. I preferred the fresh sounds of Fugazi, Jawbreaker, Operation Ivy, Big Black-Rapeman, Pixies, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf and then I heard Treepeople and realized if any band deserved the Pampered DGC Media Blitz it was Treepeople: Doug's next band Built to Spill proved that. So Nirvana to me is the epitome of old man dad rock now, just as it was then.

I love all this music. I don't get why people are getting so mad! It's just a cute video to celebrate Father's Day. For a few years now I have celebrated Father's Day by listening to dad rock with my dad. It's a great way for us to continue bonding as we get older. Anyway, what was the song at the end? Was it just a track made to sound like Steely Dan? Because if so it worked so well.
