I'm from southern California and these guys are our hometown heroes. This song came out after Dennis dennel sadly passed away who was original rythm guitarist and childhood friend of lead singer mike ness. The song debut was at the Dennis dennel benefit show in Irvine California. A song called dont take me for granted was also written after his death and released on same album .

Yeah, this is an uplifting song. And, you're pretty accurate in your break down. But, the whole Angel's Wing Take Us Away, here are my two thoughts. One, it is about death. But, two, and what I'm thinking, is that the Angel's Wings are taking them away from the sadness and depression.

Saw Ness w/ Sociald, he stopped show mid way to take about 4 skin heads out side. He said while we were all around them in the parking lot 'okay come on lets fight...
'mind you him against 4. They backed down.he went back inside and said, lets finish the show! We did and it rocked all out. Ness is the real deal. Some may dislikehim but hes always himself doing what he feels.

i always thought that the Angels Wings was him talking about hope or faith carrying you through to another day. Could be Death but song seems more inspirational than fatalistic.

I interpret the Angel Wings carrying us away is symbolic of how we are supposed to 'die' everyday..sorta like the idea of rapture..I don't literally take it as sucked into the heavens, but more the ability to rise above.
Social D has long been a favorite band of mine..in the comments of so many of there vids are hoardes of folks who claim this Mike Ness and His band had saved their lives.
I'm easily one of them.

Hopefully this will give you an appreciation of why Steve vai is who he is.
