What a great friend :) As an avid adventurer who camps in their SUV turned adventure rig way up in the mountains, hearing about the bear breaking windows and destroying cars to get in for food was unsettling. 😮
Yeah I guess everyone is getting desperate now even the bears lol… once the bears get habituated it’s hard to get them to stop or go away… I got lucky on this long road trip and left my car in three places where it could of happened and I came out unscathed
Awesome! Having watched all the hikes, it will be nice to see all the logistics. I've never been to Whitney Portal, so it was cool to see that! What a guy Larry is! That's a long drive around to the West side. I thought there was a Ranger Station down in the Valley where you could pick up permits but maybe that's over in Fresno for Kings Canyon. Looking forward to the next episode!👍
You captured some great wildlife shots, and points of interest. Such as a fallen tree tunnel, a weird boulder balancing. All things I’ve seen before and forgotten about. Pismo Paul.
At the beginning of one of my hikes of Mt. Whitney, I saw a station wagon parked directly opposite the trailhead. The back was filled with cardboard boxes, and the top box was open. Poking out of the box was a half-empty jar of peanut butter. I shook my head and said to myself that when I returned in three days the station wagon would be a heap of metal. If I could spot the peanut butter, so could the bears. But when I finished my hike the station wagon was as before, untouched. The bears must have been out of town for their annual convention.
I learned a trick in Montana many years ago. Burn a few matches in your car before closing it up. The sulfur smell lingers for days. My car has never broken into at the trail heads. Though I’ve seen others that were. The bears just peal metal window frames back or break the glass if there’s no window frame.
I love the eastern sierras. Whenever I drive through lone pine I try to make it up to Whitney portal. Such a beautiful place. I’ve done that drive from lone pine to sequoia national park when a friend came from Norway and I took her to half of the national parks in CA. Only ones we don’t hit was Redwoods, Lassen and Joshua Tree. It was an epic road trip. We also hit Big Sur so it was epic and iconic CA. Stayed at a friend house outside of Tahoe and at another friends in lake Isabella. Sequoia is a special national park. It was the first national park I visited after moving to CA in 1985. Went on there on a whim and ended up sleeping in our van cuz we didn’t have any money and we got stranded inside the park n a snowstorm in September. So found a parking space and slept there. Turned out we slept under general sherman tree. So it holds a special place in my heart for sheltering us from harm that night. If you started in crescent meadow, no wonder you saw a bear. It seems there are always bears there when we’ve gone. Enjoy your hikes. I’m sure you did.
Wow sounds like your first experience in sequoia was a great memory for sure! Yes it was crazy to start my high Sierra Hike and see a buck and a bear in not even a quarter mile in. Was a great memory for sure. Thanks for watching and the great comment!

Hey thanks I’ve never heard of that one before… I don’t always have matches but do when I car camp so I’ll try that one thank you!
Great tip! Bears are crazy. If they even see anything inside that resembles a cooler they'll go for it. Glad your car did ok Marmalade!
