Never leave home on a wilderness adventure without: 1) Filing a flight plan with specified check-in windows with trusted neighbors, friends, or family. 2) A cheap 7'x7' tarp. They are small, light, pack well, and can be cargo netted to the outside of a backpack. They offer seating, shad, rain water capture, shelter, and wind protection... This is probably the most versatile and innocuous thing one can carry. Go ubiquitous Walmart item or super-smart one-side thermo reflective. 3) 30 to 50 feet of paracord. Know how to tie a trucker's hitch and prusik at the bare minimum. 4) A magnesium fire starting block and associate sharp pocket knife. 5) A signal mirror or old-school CD-ROM. 6) Sew a very short lanyard and rescue whistle to the shoulder strap of your backpack... Make it a permanent installation so it's always there. 7) Sew a marble-sized ball compass to the shoulder strap of your backpack. Once again, making it a permanent installation. So many day hike exposure fatalities could have been avoided by being prepared with so little...
