It’s fine to buy a cheap Range Rover as long as you go in with your eyes open and are realistic about the inevitable repair and maintenance costs down the line. Most people would say £20,000 for such a luxury motor is good value, so if you buy one for £5000 and have to spend £15,000 on it, it amounts to the same thing in the end. I own a 2002 L322 TD6, cost me 13,000 Euros in 2011 with 230,000 km on it and 12 years later I’ve spent about 15,000 euros on repairs including gearbox, air suspension, fuel pump, wiper motor, turbocharger, injector, handbrake assembly, brake pipe, minor bodywork and a few other bits and bobs. 28,000 euros (around £25,000). £25k (half of it staggered over 12 years) to drive an awesome machine like this is good value in my book. From my experience the golden rules, regardless of which version you go for, are: 1. Full service history 2. Maintain a £3000 float for unexpected repair bills 3. Find a reputable independent garage that knows Range Rovers 4. If anything goes wrong get it fixed pronto, even if the car still runs ok 5. Don’t rely on it as your sole means of essential travel, have access to an alternative (second car, partners car or easy access to public transport) 6. Full breakdown cover including recovery 7. Invest in annual or at least bi-annual steam cleaning / anti rust treatment If those things are worth it to you to drive this car (they definitely are for me) then you’re on the right track. We have to spend a good proportion of our lives behind the wheel these days so why not enjoy it to the max. You can’t avoid those inevitable maintenance issues from time to time but the key is to be prepared for them, then you can enjoy this car with peace of mind. Put it this way.. every time you replace something on the car, you can probably tick it that item off the list for another 50-100,000 miles.
@ Absolutely, that’s pretty much the interval between my engine oil changes. Also I have one more for the list (I did mine this year) and that is.. ignore the “sealed for life” gearbox claim by Land Rover, and drain, flush & replace the gearbox oil every 50k miles. The GM gearbox on the TD6 is inherently prone to failure after 80-100k miles but changing the oil will prolong its life. My gearbox was replaced 50k ago, hence the recent oil change.
@@justinneill5003 Oh yes, good point. Change the gearbox oil. Every 50k miles sounds like a really good interval. I'm changing mine again when I reach 200 thousand km.
My guess is that the likes of Harry’s garage and jessa are bigging them up on line as well as other influencers to drive the demand up (price rise) so they can off load their own L322 for a better price so they can upgrade to something else that is euro 6 lol
Congrats mate I’m sure you’ve heard the horror stories, but if you’re able to maintain it yourself it’s a great experience, you know it’ll cost you money but it’ll take you anywhere because I’ve been to a lot of magical places in mine, I travel from Kent to Scotland every year although its not frugal I’m not bothered, my road tax is over 700 and I have to pay for the ulez which is quite annoying.
Goregous! Congratulations on your L322. Keep her. I have a, since new 2004, L322 with 217k miles, Epsom with Ivory, lux. I love her. You have the lux package as well, the best seats ever. Your mpg is better than mine. My best hwy is 17/18 mpg. Worst city is 11mpg. Average around 16 mpg. 2003-2005 have proper glass lenses for the headlights. Great video, I look forward to your future posts.
Best looking Range Rover. I've got the same model and paid just over £3k a year or two ago. As long as you're good with the spanners, a MIG welder, and a multi-tester, you'll be fine! 🙂
I own more or less exactly the same car as this one, BMW V8 model year 2005 (made in late 2004) in the same color. I really love driving it, I've never owned a car that I almost find excuses to drive. But it's old, so maintenance is super important. Oil changes, super important. Owning one of these classic L322s is a rare luxury these days, but they age gracefully. They are surprisingly easy and simple to maintain, compared to later generations of Range Rovers and are fundamentally the last of the "old school" SUVs. Rust is the main enemy, rust at the tailgate, rust at the rear wheel arches, rust in breaklines, etc. Nothing unusual, but after 20 years there's going to be rust somewhere. It can be costly to fix, but ultimately worth it. You didn't pay much for the vehicle, so try to set aside money to maintain it. Waterpump should be changed, perhaps radiator, definitely change the fluid in the gearbox. In fact, change all fluids you can. Go nuts. Learn as much as you can about the quirks and ins and outs of the vehicle, there's a plethora of knowledge and videos out there to help you along. That's my advice. It's a damn good car, overengineered and robust, but with age everything decays. Oh that reminds me, everything made out of rubber is going to be very tired after 20 years. It may take you a year or two to get on top of everything. And yet, this is such an underappreciated model. The BMW V8 sounds like nothing else. Lovely.
Had my 2004 l322 4.4 v8 petrol for nearly a year now. Perfect weekend vehicle for family and golf. Just had a new alternator which packed up after 500 mile round trip. For such a big car its amazing how agile it is at low speeds and parking. My friend has offered me his 2006 3.6 tv8 but now sure i want the worry of turbos going etc. MPG is around the same and petrol is cheaper at the moment 🤔
Nice car. I bought a 3.6 diesel 4years ago and still love it. You’ll have some ups and downs with it, but be tolerant, remember it is now quite an old car. Which means it’s probably close to the bottom of its depreciation cycle.
Hi mate nice vid , I’ve had my 2004 l322 petrol vogue for 4 months now it had 15000 and there was so much wrong with it , but driving it was awesome so I decided to purcever with it and almost all done now and now I enjoy it more 👍
L322 are not unreliable. They are actually quite reliable with alot of bmw design. If you maintain it correctly then they are very reliable. If you don't maintain it correctly then like Any car they become unreliable. You do know that's the bmw v8 under the bonnet?
Remember , these cars were built in haunted houses , which is why sometimes the repair bills scare you and quite often you get ghost error signals coming through and sometimes they scare themselves into limp mode , usually a quick recycle will chase them away .
Great presentation: got two of them .. supercharged and vogue both petrol black/ black dark bleu/ beige , love them both … better driver position ever comfort , and reliable so far .. ( proceeding to services on time .. ) why L322 seems to be “the “ model of reference ?? Somehow between the old generation to the new L405 : maybe because is the last classic square one shaped ?? is the new defender don’t really symbolise the defender the true one still the older version in my opinion ?? BTW I replaced my radios by a 10.”2 multimedia screen which fit perfectly and gives a great interior look !!
Hi there! Looks like you did well! you didn't say!? but I assume the dreaded air suspension works has it should with no hesitation I'm thinking about getting one myself I don't do many miles I'm semi retired max miles a year about 4/5000 from what I've learnt from TH-cam and autotrader things can start going wrong around the 100,000 miles mark I think if I do get one I'll make sure gearbox /suspension/ turbos have been sorted they can be the biggest strides around ya ankles jobs I'll keep watching and see how you get on cheers dave from Somerset
Id rather buy a cheap RR because its a v8 petrol, rather than its cheap cos its got issues, if that makes sense. You could be onto a winner here at that price. Time will tell I suppose. Good luck!
Great video that I enjoyed. Yes they are awesome vehicles. Is that grill original ? ( not saying it isn’t but most L322 of that era have horizontal slats ) Keep the content coming !

That's really good advice. I'd like to add point number 8. Change oil religiously at 8000km and use a premium 5W40 on the petrol BMW V8.

This is a carbon copy of my first car..well, mine was a 2005 with the updated screen. 4.4 BMW m62, Bonnati grey, and the gorgeous tan interior.
Ditch the side bars and put the original grill on. Will look way better. Powerful UK sell grilles
They're ok, but they are definitely a good compromise of luxury, utility and comfort.
We had one of these in 2011. After about 3 years we had some serious issues with the engine and entertainment system 😩
