    Got 'lucky' with my disk 14 years ago. After 6 months of incapacitation, I got a cortisone shot and felt 85% better. One relapse in 2011 but otherwise 'ok'. Never quite the same but functional

    This was an amazing video. I stumbled across you guys today by accident and have been watching your videos for a few hours now and really enjoying them. I actually live in the Philippines and am the representative for a US Flight Simulator Manufacturer, although Im Australian and Canadian dual myself, and I was going to get a cat to sail around the islands with my Filipina wife and kids. I’ve had back issues for years and they’ve only got worse since the COVID lockdowns here and a motorcycle accident I had a couple of years ago. I got a compression fracture in my spine but it’s my lower back that just kills me now. An MRI at the time of the motorbike accident showed a lot of disk damage to my L5, S1 and L4 region. I’m nearly 60 and am trying to take nothing stronger than Tramadol, and trying to do a bit of yoga and weights to strengthen my muscles, but it’s got to the point that I can barely walk or put weight on my right leg when I get up in the morning and it takes me at least five minutes just to stand up straight. That’s great news that your surgery went well and would love to know who your surgeon was and what you had done. Im thinking that sailing might be a bit much for me now, so maybe a trawler style boat would work so I can still follow my dreams with a bit less strain on my spine. You guys are living the dream. Cheers!

    I have similar problems with my back for 10 years now and need another operation. I sold my mono to buy a cat around the time i got injured, but the reality is i don't think i could maintain a boat in my condition. The closest i get these days is watching video's like yours. If i was guaranteed a morphine prescription at my port of call i would think about it but am crippled without it. Watching this gave me hope. Thank you. Stay safe out there.

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Geez Bob... that's sad news... That was my 2nd op on the same disc... So far, it seems to be better.... I only get sore if i'm too lazy... I really need to keep moving... Walking is best (if we're not in quarantine), but planking or push ups or squats keeps the supporting muscles stronger... I hope you find a solution, and get out on the big blue...Cheers

    • @scottwheeler2494
      @scottwheeler2494 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bob, take this not as advice but a warning. I know this only because of my own back problems. There will come a day when the morphine no longer works... and it will reach a point where they can no longer raise your prescription level. For me that was 500 mg per day. It’s unlikely they will let you get that high today. At that point you will be faced with stopping the opiates. I had to come up with a different path. Sooner or later you will be faced with the same decision. Just a heads up - and the sooner you do it, the easier it will be to get off of them.

    Glad to hear your surgery went well and you are back at the boat in record time. Hope you heal well. I've watched just a couple videos of yours. The first was a kind of tour of the boat. You mentioned an aluminum hull and how that afforded openness and space. I was instantly intrigued. I love the open feeling of your boat. But the condensation on the underside of the deck/ceiling... I'm a contractor and have dealt with that on numerous metal buildings. Some buildings will make you mad. And yet I've heard if you are going to colder Northern seas, get a steel or aluminum boat. I hadn't thought about that. Or what you could do to minimize it. Any thoughts?

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, thanks for watching!... That condensation only happened during our winter time in Cape Town.. We would run the blow heater (in marina) to make it habitable, then the air chills down at night...
      Has never been a problem otherwise.
      Yes, very pleased I came across this design made of ally... So confident in its strength and stiffness... A great blue water boat

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geez Michael... No i wouldn't... I would prefer a good mono of that length... But I'd suggest 40' is minimum length for a well designed seaworthy cat, for blue water cruising.

    I have really enjoyed these videos and the perspective on catamarans it provides. I was especially interested in your comments on engine requirements. Given that the engines are rarely used at sea, do you think that electric motors with a generator and extra solar would be enough? How much engine power would be adequate? Appreciate your advice.

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure Brian...The electric idea is do-able...although still too expensive from what people tell me... and you would lose some redundancy by only having 1 generator.
      We have Beta35hp... but the designer normally uses Yanmar30's (29hp)

    Your experience with the locals in berthing your boat, is symptomatic of the difficulties we have in South Africa. The locals are untrained and really just provide only labour services. They do however demand above average salaries for their jobs which they cannot do effectively. When one asks the locals why they demand such high salaries, they answer, ‘I need more money because I don’t know anything about this job and I will have to learn’. Actually sickening. There is also a language barrier. Most of the locals in The Republic of Hout Bay only speak Afrikaans, and it’s a hybrid of the language. It’s very difficult to understand especially if you are in a quick moving situation. As a South African it’s never comfortable to see a visitor struggling to get something done. Ah that we all like the coffee shop guy??

    9:19 "Why so wet??" As a dog behaviour trainer I can answer that question for you!
    Look at the video leading up to that point. The way you greeted your dogs is how it happened. Your 'excited energy' got them too worked up and they urinated. I would suggest next time trying talking in a voice that isn't as high pitched, and actually, try to ignore the dogs when you first arrive. Don't even look at them until they are calm. It is hard because they are soooo cute, I know. But once they are calm, what you will be doing is rewarding their calmness with your affection instead of the excited, peeing behaviour. Which is what you have now.
