In a literal interpretation, I've lived in Ohio all of my life, and I agree with the first verse. I've been to warm beaches and such, but there's nothing better to me than autumn and winter. I love City and Colour, but that verse just always speaks to my little Ohio an mind. :)
City And Colour .. The only man who can release albums that just keep getting better when you thought it wasn't even possible ! This man has no limits !
All of you who take his words in such a literal sense are actually choosing to ignore the truer value of this song. As a matter of fact, I didn't hear the people from Lincoln, Nebraska throwing a TH-cam comment tantrum when he released "Comin' Home." So before you or anyone decide to take offense to the words you hear, remember that Dallas is, first of all very humble, and secondly, has always written songs with meanings that are deeper than the words themselves. That's how he has separated himself as a musician. He's also referencing the common image of California, which happens to be a cultural stereotype that isn't going away. Just something to think about :)
This song describes perfectly the feelings you feel while are you stranded abroad...everything is so highly involving and all that stuff overwhelms you...you keep on walking far from home, but your heart is running toward it...craving to be far from home, searching for something new,the future, while dreaming and desiring the past...
These are some brutal lyrics for such a nice sounding song. When I saw him live and people were cheering for this song I was asking them in my head "do you realize he's actually dissing us?" "Fortune and fame won't save you when California is wiped out by the ring of fire or the great earthquakes... Why is everyone still singing about California" Kinda feel for those in Lincoln, Nebraska :/ I still love you, man u.u
awesome-if you've been to cali, you might understand the lyrics- He poses the question "why's everyone singin' about california?" He answers his own question by singing about a few of cali's characteristics- "sandy beaches...blue ocean water" "people still follow their dreams to [sweet] california" its laid back its beautiful its magic cali
I think you got it all wrong. He also sings it has something he cannot relate to. I think he defines it as shiny and beautiful on the outside, but it has no character. Hence the need to see the leaves fall.
guitarnublet I think you got it all wrong. Sure, he sees the beauty, glamour and glitter of the golden state teetering on a giant fault line. He likes to visit there and do a couple of shows, but he can't relate to the lifestyle because he's a true Canadian boy at heart and he likes the change of seasons, Seems pretty straight forward to me, as to what he's saying.
jagrmari I think he actually answered a question about this song. He said he was constantly asked why he hasn't moved to California yet now that he's doing pretty good or something like that and he wrote this because people kept asking him and I guess yeah the song is pretty self explanatory he wouldn't live here cuz he isn't too fond of it.
He's complaining about people singing about California while singing about California. I don't think irony ever sounded so good. The fact that this song is basically him just poking some fun at the 'Golden State' and it still managed to make me feel something is simply amazing. I guess it doesn't matter what he's singing about he'll always pull something out of me. Whether it's a smile or tears (tears in the good, I needed a good cry, kinda way).
I think that's a custom Martin he was given by Martin, he still uses the old 1944 Martin as well, I saw him a couple weeks ago playing it in Niagara on the Lake
+Kelly Brunt The song is satire - more or less. There's a huge cultural stereotype in America and other countries that says California is one side of a triangle of American stereotypes - you have the liberal, warm, nice, famous people California in the west; in the south, you have... well... the south. You know. All those stereotypes about flagrant racists and KKK members. In the east, you have that gangsta-vibe, mafioso New York culture. These are all, in their own way, half-truths mixed in with myths, and this song's simply poking fun at that. Furthermore, he has mentioned before that he is always asked if he's moved to L.A. yet - emphasis on "yet". As if that's where the only famous people live. My guess is he got tired of the question, wrote the song in satire, but then the music for it took over - there are parts that are meant to be sad and a bit ironic.
+Kelly Brunt The song is speaking about how many musicians end up moving to California and about how he wants to do his music his way and where he he is from. In all seriousness, California is no Ontario in way of seasonal changes; we have hot and humid summers and literal feet of snow in the winters with graceful periods of transition in between.
Why's everyone still singing about California? Haven't we heard enough about the Golden State? I guess if you like sandy beaches and blue ocean water There's something about it, to which I cannot relate I need to see the leaves change and the snowflakes falling I need to hear the call, the wind whistling through the winter pines Why's everyone still singing about California? Haven't we heard enough about the Golden State? And people still follow them dreams to sweet California And from time to time I pass on by, but I will never stay Sure there are beautiful people, in the city of lost angels They're living like they're kings and queens, from some royal age But fortune and fame won't save you, when California Is wiped out by the ring of fire or a great earthquake No, I will never stay Never stay Never stay
All musicians professional or not make mistakes, it's a human thing. It's a shame that some people are too busy picking faults in everything to truly enjoy things in life - most people would have never noticed had you not mentioned it.
I can't focus on anything when I hear Dallas sing/play guitar. I put 100% focus into listening to him because he is just phenomenal.
This man has changed my life! helped me through some serious hurdles in my life!
Same.
same bro, we are victorious!
what I love about him is that any live version of any songs sounds better than the recorded version
First heard dallas in about 2006 still in love with his songs
This is one of the most Canadian songs ever written. " Coming home " also. 🇨🇦
Oh my god, what a beautiful voice

Being from Maine, I couldn’t agree more.
City And Colour .. The only man who can release albums that just keep getting better when you

Fucking beautiful, thank God someone is still making good music.
Oh, man, this song is AWESOME!

People don't seem the look past the literal meanings of lyrics. It's sad.
Well, he wasn't being metaphorical about Lincoln, Nebraska though...It actually is a shithole.
@@martynworsdale4100 what a shit hole is to you may be someones else's paradise! who are you to decide?

The sound of that guitar is mind blowing. Such a warm and bright tone. Voice is awesome too!
Agreed, one of the best tones I've ever heard coming out of a guitar. Very soothing, it matches his voice perfectly.
His martin is better. He recorded the entirety of Bring me your love on it. Its sexy man.
Megapie678 That's actually a Martin 12 fret dreadnought. But you're right, his old restored 1950s Martin is like sex
+WDKSixStringSlayer its actually a 1948 Martin OO-17
this is a www.recordingking.com/guitars
This song, for some reason, is one of my favorites from Dallas. It speaks to me for reasons that I cannot express.
These are some brutal lyrics for such a nice sounding song. When I saw him live and people were cheering for this song I was asking them in my head "do you realize he's actually dissing us?"

Love♥
One hundred percent relate, I moved to cali last year and I did not like it. It never rained where I was and I learned I loved the rain from it.
his voice gets better and better each album

💚💚💚
This is definitely his best album so far..
I think that's a custom Martin he was given by Martin, he still uses the old 1944 Martin as well, I saw him a couple weeks ago playing it in Niagara on the Lake

How I miss my California
Fuck, Dallas is so amazing…so underrated 😢

We have changing seasons in California. Just go up North. California extends beyond LA and San Diego. We even have snow.

Jon D. Lambert I like how you generalize and actually sound racist.
imagine always taking lyrics so seriously and literally as this person
yeah and that's so rare...
is this on an all acoustic album anywhere?
GOD DAMNIT DALLAS. i fucking love you.
i love the irony in how he is talking about people constantly singing about california as he sings about it :p
Why's everyone still singing about California?

No, I will never stay
Never stay
Never stay
This man can't do wrong.

For all you guys who liked Little Hell more
Am I the only one who noticed his mistake at 1:42 ? Anyway, it doesn't really matter.
All musicians professional or not make mistakes, it's a human thing. It's a shame that some people are too busy picking faults in everything to truly enjoy things in life - most people would have never noticed had you not mentioned it.
I don't know if you can really see my com.. I said A-NY-WAY, IT DOESN'T REA-LLY MA-TTER. Don't feel sorry.
