This is a video compilation of our English Cream Golden Retriever puppy from when he was 8 weeks old (2 months) to now when he is almost 11 months old.

He did go through a skinny awkward stage for a few weeks. The vet said he was healthy.

Now he is 73lbs.

He is so cute!!!!! Was he more of a naughty puppy? Was it easy to potty train him? Did he chew everything in sight? Sorry for all the questions! I am thinking of adopting for my 15th birthday, just trying to get some opinions from puppy owners!
We got lucky. He has always been really mellow and relatively obedient.
He was house trained after just a few weeks. Although we still had about 10 accidents in the house over the first few months.
He didn't really chew anything besides his toys. Be sure to have plenty of chew toys, bully sticks, deer antlers, etc for your puppy to chew.
I didn't sleep much the first month or so since he was 8 weeks old when we got him. I took him outside every hour or two during the day and every few hours at night which really helped with the house training.

We just got the news yesterday that a breeders puppy just had a litter last week, and she want expecting such a big litter of 11! So there was enough room for us! We are going to choose our puppy in 5 weeks (6 weeks old) and brining it home in another 2 weeks! We are thinking of calling him Bently :D

Hi Paul, just wondering why you cut his hair down so short, does he have the dreaded Golden skin allergies? I have 2 Goldens one has allergies the other does not. Your boy is beautiful, such a good idea to journal his growing up. Well done!
Hi, I'm assuming you are talking about how he looks around the 4:00 minute mark.
That was just his "awkward" stage around 4 to 5 months of age. He got tall, lanky and skinny all of a sudden even though he was eating plenty. We have never cut his hair or shaved him. I just brush him frequently.
At around 6 months of age, he started filling out and looking like a regular dog instead of a wet rat. :)
Luckily, he doesn't seem to have any allergies. We had been feeding him the Wellness Large Breed Puppy and then switched to the Wellness Large Breed Adult at 1 year of age. He also gets Milk Bones, the Wellness soft treats and an occasional Bully Stick.
He is 16 months old now and I plan on doing a new life time recap video.

My golden retriever also got skinny but now he's getting better within time.. I hope so... And I think he has less fur as compared to the other goldens of his age.
Hi Tanishka, I wouldn't worry about your puppy. A lot of puppies go through that skinny awkward phase where they start growing taller before they fill out with muscle. Don't be tempted to over feed your puppy. There is lots of information on the Golden Retriever forum about the slow growth plan. Cute puppy. But just a few observations:
3:05 Don't leave mirror unsecured - it might fall and shatter on top of your dog.
3:18 Be careful of chords. Dogs can get tangled up in it and get strangled.

We had just moved in and the mirror was mounted to the wall the next day. Besides, I was standing right there by him.
Our puppy was never unsupervised when outside of his crate. But yes, I do also recommend that people tie up their curtain cords to keep them out of reach of their puppies.
I think the most important tip is to use a crate. If you aren't actively supervising your puppy, it should be safely confined in its crate.
Our boy will be two years old in a few months and doing great. :)
I just moved out to live on my own in my condo. I am in battle with the decision whether to get a golden retriever puppy or not. I have never had a dog and i don't know how hard it is to raise one. You all seem to be able to do it, but am sure its not that easy...
Hi Sam, He was definitely a lot of work the first few months and I didn't get much sleep.
But he has brought lots of joy in to our lives and all the work was totally worth it. He makes us laugh every day, keeps us active and we've met lots of new people because of his magnetic personality.
Do you have a flexible job or can you work at home?
If not, you'll need a dog walker or day care which can get expensive (about $15-30 per walk/day).
Another issue is whether your condo association will allow large dogs. Having a big dog really limited our options when searching for a rental. It wasn't impossible, we just had to either settle for something less than ideal or spend more.
So if you've got the time, patience for training, and you can afford all the expenses - I say go for it! :)

The problem though is that i work 40 hours a week and i work at a data center and at unusual times like night shift and so.. I am trying to convince my brother to help me take it when i go to work... I cant wait to have my "Oskar" haha

My golden didnt sleep first 3 months after that I have decided that I m not going to have kids! :D but...except this they are amazing and all they need is your love and attention. because this dog is so kind that you dont need to train him so strictly.other dogs can be dangerous if they are not trained but golden is not. Charlie is also my first dog, now he is 8 years old still completly crazy but the best choice of my life
If you have time to accompany the dog then absolutely you should get one they are playful easy to train highly intelligent and they adapt to environments easily but if you get a puppy train them not to bite retrievers are known to bite alot
i agree completly..the most he needs is to be with you. after he is the most happy in the world..even if he usually doesnt care what you are saying to him it s not dangerous...my 8 years old golden retriver is like that..and he is 8 and i m still alive too so... :)

Hi Paul, i recently got a a 2 month old golden retriever (purebred) and i was wondering, when you first got your doggy (he is adorable by the way) did he happen to have "liquidy" poop? i am not sure if it is his diet... and the first days you had him did he weep? or whine? my Tyson did, we think it was from that he was missing his mom, dad, and siblings.. Thanks :)
Hi Alexa, Yes, we definitely had plenty of poop problems when he was little. From what I've read, all puppies have those problems as they are growing up.
Two products that I found to be helpful are "Purina FortiFlora Probiotic" and "The Honest Kitchen - Perfect Form".
They are both powders that can help stop diarrhea. Although I think the Purina probiotic does a better job of helping an upset stomach. I still use it sometimes to get his stomach back to normal after a day at the dog beach when he drinks some ocean water or chews on gross sticks.
Maybe your puppy was just a bit nervous getting used to the new surroundings. I'm sure he'll be fine. :)
For food, I would recommend a high quality dry food such as Wellness Large Breed Puppy. I've also heard & read good things about Blue Buffalo.
There are a few sites that rate dog foods.Check out the "Dog Food Advisor" site. Try to buy a 4 or 5 star rated food.

Most people over feed their puppies which can lead to health problems later in life. Just like some human kids, puppies that are NOT over fed go through a tall lanky stage until they start to fill out.

No problem. :) Yes, dogs can eat apples, carrots, bananas, blueberries and also broccoli (in small amounts). Our boy prefers his fruits and veggies frozen. He goes crazy for frozen broccoli.
Just avoid chocolate (I'm sure everyone knows that one, but why not mention it) and also avoid grapes and onion.

Does your golden ever eat things he's not supposed to? My golden keeps trying to eat things such as twigs, coins, pebbles, etc. It may be because he's still teething or because golden's are meant to retrieve everything. Did your golden do this as a puppy?
Hi Matt, Yes! When our boy was a puppy he would try to eat rabbit poop, rocks, grass and anything else he could get in his mouth. One time I had to pull out a rusty push pin from his mouth.
Just keep an eye on him when he is outside and provide him lots of chew toys (with supervision) while in the house. He will eventually grow out of it.

I had a golden/lab pup and that's completely normal. You've got to keep a close eye on it so it doesn't eat anything it's not supposed to

+Kammyland Hi, I did all of the training myself. I just read browsed some pet training books at a book store, watched a lot of TH-cam videos and read websites to learn how to train him.
We recently took him to some agility classes just for fun now that he is 3 years old.
