  • Learn how to get a massive metal bass tone in your mix using amp sims in this tutorial from Forrester Savell using the multi-tracks for "Simple Boy" by Karnivool.
This clip is from Forrester's Mixing Progressive Rock Bass Fast Track in URM Enhanced.
He uses Pro Tools, a bass DI, IK Multimedia Amplitube, Avid Eleven guitar amp sim, Waves GTR, Toneforge Menace, Auto Align, and Time Adjuster, but the same approach will work in any DAW with any amp sim (including any of the free ones).

For those watching and who don't know Karnivool, this song is titled "Simple Boy," not "Deadman."

After seeing Glenn Fricker’s video where he used a real guitar tube amp to record bass with its not surprising using amp sim plugins for a similar result. Stacking sims for overall tone is clearly not a complex concept, but is no less brilliant all the same.
    Great video 👍

Lars Ulrich to producer: "make it so the bass is barely audible, okay now drop it another 8 decibels"
    These guys: "3 bass tracks!!"

I actually worked with Steve Thompson who mixed ..and Justice for All. Of course, I had to ask him about that. Not sure if you were joking or not, but according to Steve that is exactly how it went down.

2 amp bass recording setup I like:
    - Radial Twin City amp splitter
AMP 1: (sort of but not really clean amp)
Sansamp BDDI > Darkglass Vintage Microtubes > Real Amp + mic of your choice (RE20 or 421 for me usually, or a 57) + whatever cab is there.
    AMP 2: (Dirty/Distorted amp)
Marshal JCM800 and standard Marshall 412 + any distortion or OD pedal I might like in front of it. Just tried a Hoof fuzz and it was killer. Love Klon type OD's as well.
Just play around with this setup until it sounds good, record, then dial in to taste later.

You acrually don’t need Auto-align to do that sweep in sample to phase align. Pro Tools can do it for you without any use of a plugin. Just scroll down to the botton of your track where you can see your delay compensation information. Below the sample delay, there’s a +/- signal, you can just click int there and swipe until you find a value that suites your phase correlation.

I always thought it was funny how you would see these DAWs with a screen full of dozens of tracks running on them, with multiple channels for guitars, vocals and drums and in the middle of it all there's a single, lonely track labelled 'Bass'.

Great video. Now it would be interesting to see how you make room in the mix for guitars and vocals. The bass is really huge :)
I also wondered that you didn't eq out the lower mids and highs in the 2 obvious distorted tracks and used the non distorted DI track as a compressed bass - subbass track. Don't you have a massive low frequency buildup when you put 3 bass tracks together without cutting? Or did you process with eq before that video, because after all it sounded good. Cheers

You're probably right. Seems like this section is "guitar-void" or rather, the guitar is in a fairly high register, so it doesn't clash with the low end of the bass, allowing the bass to breathe more. Once the low-tuned notes of the guitar kick in, I would assume some eq automation kicks in

should've stated DI box then. DI could mean the instrument. anyway, it was recorded in 2008 so nobody would answer what box was that, and frankly it doesn't matter one bit. Any modern DI or Hi-Z input would provide virtually the same result if the source is right.
