Icon tools 5 piece ratcheting double box end wrench set. Listen! The same company, Kabo tools Taiwan makes this same set for basically everyone under sun Matco, cornwell, carlyle. From Cornwell you'll pay $366 how about the Matco truck, it's gonna be a cool $365 from there but regular price here is $225. Damn, that's over $100 savings for just knowing who actually makes it.

The ICON tools at Harbor Freight are excellent quality. There was a time when I wouldn't spend a dime on a tool NOT made in the USA. But this is a different world than back then. Non-USA-made tools are made better then they were in the day. Even Craftsman is made in Taiwan, now.
Full disclosure: I don't personally own any ICON tools. But I know people who do and they swear by them. I have many of the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh and Quinn brand tools in my box, and they have yet to fail me. And for the price, I figured I couldn't go wrong. So far, so good.
Hell, once I bought a set of Pittsburgh sockets I didn't even need just because there was a sale. They sat in my box for months. Then one day I was replacing the transmission on my 2014 Ford van and I saw a bolt with a spline head. And I remembered that I had a set of spline sockets. THAT set that I had no use for when I picked them up. I practically did a little dance when that happened.

I love these scenarios where one company makes pretty much the same tool for everyone with the only differences being branding. If you don't care about the name thats stamped on it you can save a lot of money. The best part is that anyone can just walk into a store and buy them. I know most mechanics prefer the convince of a tool truck but my shop only gets snap on and that guy comes when he feels like it so it's less reliable than going to a store or ordering online for me.

Their little 12 piece SAE and Metric stubby combo wrench set (Item 97383 or 61395) is always ultra-handy in its rugged little clip-lock case (no more fishing about for the right size), and are my go-to set for tinkering with my elderly hoopties, where the challenge is often NOT giving those fasteners so much heave-ho they'll strip.

I used to do this all the time with Snap On tools.
Sadly not with spanners and sockets, but torches, gas soldering irons and other "kit" tools.
My colleagues would laugh and say "But lifetime warranty" - until I pointed out that the manufacturers usually offer good warranties AND being so cheap, can be replaced 4 or 5 times for the cost of 1 snap on.
My LED Lenser torches might not have had "Snap on" laser etched into it, but at 50% of the price, LED Lenser still gave me two warranty replacements in 15 years on 3 different models 😁
It pays to shop around, or to find the manufacturers name on a branded tool 😉

I just have to spend an hour plus after work, plus my gas to go warranty HF stuff. The tool truck will drop it off within 24 hours, I've almost always got something that will finish the job till he gets there. Plus my local HF, the manager that's always there is a prude. Last thing I warrantied was some Pittsburg vice grips. They opened and closed rough and the set a screw turned rough. She gave me a hard time because they looked fine. Next closest is pretty cool but it's a 45 min drive from home

Manufactures used different specifications for the different OEM specs. Just because two companies use the same manufacturer, doesn't mean they are the same quality.

    • @GarnettTools
      @GarnettTools  ปีที่แล้ว

also doesn't mean they aren't the same quality. Because OEM'S LOVE to make minor adjustments to the things they sell to customers like Matco. Why? Because their processes are already streamlined, any changes that deviate from that will cost time and money affecting the bottom line because now you have to look at almost every step as if it's brand new. Forging, cleaning, finishing, quality control, plating all have to be aware that there are changes with this new different product. IT CAN AND DOES GET DONE, but not in most cases.
Take it from someone who has actual experience working for manufacturers; for example a customer like Caterpillar will absolutely devote the initial time and cost associated with making major changes to a mfg process, they will endure test run, after test run, destroy it all then run again and send their own engineers out to oversee the whole process JUST to make sure this tooth you're making for them, will last on their million dollar tunnel digger.
But your wrenches? They are a polished piece of bar steel, it more likely that a CUSTOMER Like Harbor Freight approaches a Manufacturer like Kabo tools and says "hey we wanna buy the same tools you sell to Matco, Cornwell, ATD platinum, Mountain, K Tool, Carlyle" Kabo says "SURE, so long as you order similar quantity as those guys, we will sell them to you in your trade dress and deliver on this date" THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS 8 TIMES OUT OF 10
I SHOWED Everyone HERE that these are not similar, THEY ARE THE SAME: th-cam.com/video/MCRYwXMXH7Y/w-d-xo.html

So you'd rather wait for the tool truck? Harbor Freight makes some OK tools that will survive. I use the Pittsburgh series as a weekend warrior and they work every time. They have survived me abusing them and they work when I need them. Imagine being honest and telling a customer you couldn't fix their car today because you need to wait for the tool truck so you can buy another $200 rachet that had the proper name on it.🤣 I used "made in usa" Stanley's that were broken every time I went to use them. Most commonly it was the locking lug for the direction. Doesn't happen with the HG one I have now.
Don't get me wrong, though.. there are some absolute dogsh*t tools there. You just have to pick and choose and maybe you don't have to get a home equity loan to buy a full set of tools.
