My mindset was same as yours. But slowly I gain confidence. As I am a self taught artist, no one there to tell me that you shouldn't try Acrylic for portraits. May that was the reason I tried and now it's my favorite medium. It's actually more easier than you think to correct mistakes with Acrylic. Try some small projects. Hope you'll enjoy it too. Gesso is applied for preparing the canvas surface for painting. It's may not necessary for the pre-primed canvas. But you can use additionally for some additional smoothness or some extra textures. Thank you 😊🎨🖌️
I too have to purchase from online. Same case as yours. Hope you'll get it from online. Any canvas or paper will work. If paper go for 300 gsm atleast for better results. And any brand of Acrylic colors will work. I use Camlin Artist Acrylic colors. It's cheaper and best in India.

O god how you handle acrylic. As I can't handle them I hate them, because they dry very fast and I am unable to repair my faults.
