Does anyone else think that this musical score is absolutely perfect? It really captures the wonder and majesty of Narnia. This music never fails to bring back good memories from my childhood.
I always fall asleep watching this movie. not because its boring but it was a big part of my childhood and just hearing the music and dialogue is EXTREMELY comforting and relaxing to me
I know what you mean, but it's a tad bit odd that this Edmund comes off as more of a backstabbing traitor than Edmund in the movie. The way he's licking his lips before saying turkish delight.
"And as you are the most cleverest and most handsome young man I've ever met..." Her voice is absolutely DRIPPING with sarcasm there but Edmund doesn't notice it XD
She was absolutely brilliant as the Witch. Clearly sinister from the outset, then putting on a nice act to win Edmund over, but still being brusque and short with him, and all punctuated by manic outbursts of anger, followed quickly by calm and friendly demeanor, but not too friendly. So well done.
Wow. Took me over 20 yrs...and thanks to obscure uploads like this on TH-cam, my vague childhood memories can finally be put to rest ; ) I always remember this "snow queen, witch" character from when I was very little, but couldn't remember what movie, show, etc. it was from. Until now, after doing a little digging. Thanks for uploading.
I'm getting old :/ This aired in Sweden on the morning during the winter holiday. I did not understand much of the show then, but the theme song really brings back memories.
Tilda is a really good actress and really scary in the new films. However, I prefer this witch for three reasons: 1. She's hilarious! 2. She is more like the witch that C.S. Lewis invented. 3. Barbara Kellerman is a really good actress!
Plus, I'll admit, I actually like the look of this witch more than the new one. No offence to Tilda Swinton, but this witch just looks cooler (no pun intended).
What is it with everyone crapping on the Witch’s design in the Disney version? I know Tilda Swinton’s version didn’t look anything like the book, but nobody complained about Frankenstein or Gene Wilder’s portrayal of Willy Wonka or Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch of the West not looking anything like the book description. So why does the look of the White Witch matter more compared to the other appearances of the aforementioned characters on film?
@@hunterolaughlin I don't think it's just the appearance. It might jusy be a point theu bring up veczuse theu don't loke thay version as much. as a kid in the 90s i must have rented this miniseries from blockbuster about 100 times; at the time i never even realized it was based on a book or that it was part 1 of a series, but it was my favorite ever. coming back to it now i never realized this was a miniseries since it was just on two vhs tapes, i just thought it was a long movie.
The intro gives me this weird feeling inside:P It kind of makes me wish I could go back in time...:) I can't remember much of this, but I do remember being terrified of the White Witch!
I bet the actor of Edmund had a lot of fun with Barbara whilst acting this out - Barbara is a wonderful lady, she's so cheerful and not scary at all, I bet she and the actor of Edmund had a lot of fun, especially as Barbara appears so scary here, even though she's just acting :)
I always preferred this witch to the grotesquely costumed witch in the Disney version. She seemed to be a large ham in the books and they really captured it here. (There's a cartoon version of this story made in the 70's that also has a hammy witch in it. I'm sure it's got to be on TH-cam somewhere...)
Jadis was not a hammy villain in the books. Barbara Kellerman’s performance is an insult to the White Witch. I recently re-read the book in honor of its 70th anniversary, and Jadis was a lot more restrained and subtle. For example, this Witch freaks out over learning there are 4 kids in Narnia and her chief of Police being slain compared to her book counterpart who never freaked out and took the information in very calmly. This is proof that book Jadis is not as hammy or over-the-top as the portrayals before Swinton. The differences to how she reacted to 4 kids being in Narnia and Maugrim’s death in the book compared to the miniseries shows a stark contrast in behavior and personality. With how book Jadis takes in the information suggests she is a strategist who thinks and plans her next course of action instead of acting out on her emotions compared to Kellerman’s Witch who overreacts whenever she hears some news that could seem like a threat to her. So, go back re-read the book and compare the Witch’s personality to Kellerman’s.
I love this version. I can't even say it. I used to watch this over and over when I was younger. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I do prefer the old version to the new.
"I see you are an idiot, what ever else you may be!" Haha! I love that line! And I like the queen (and many other things) better in this version than in the new one:P
@@steflondon88 you're correct. In the book CS Lewis says that the candy was enchanted & after 1 taste of that stuff if allowed to do so the schmuck would keep eating it until he died. Lewis also said that Edmund found regular, wholesome food bland, but after his talk with Aslan & Lucy healing him, Edmund was right as rain.
The White Witch here is absolutely brilliant, I didn't think that Disney's White Witch was good enough or scary enough, but the actress here is just fantastic, she genuinely scared the living daylights out of me when I watched this when I was little, unlike the 2005 one.
I like the theatricalness of this. At the end of the day it's meant to target children, so has to be a bit over the top, and the oldfashionedness gives it a really magical feel, I think (:
My Uncle worked on this TV series and Prince Caspian and also the box of Delights 4 years earlier. He worked in special effects, which at the time were a bit different from today.
I remember that, during the original broadcast on BBC - during the scene where Peter & Susan talk to the professor about Lucy, the signal cut-off for a few seconds; the programme resumed with the announcer apologising for the error. I still have that original broadcast on tape, although sadly I didn't record the very first episode, as it hadn't caught on with me & didn't know what it was about. This version is way above the 2005 film version, it just has soul & lots of character about.
Pretty much starch and suger mixed in water with the soapwart as an emulsifier, most modern version don't use it preferring chemical cooking emulsifiers that have no taste at all. Its then flavored with rosewater, mastic or lemon giving it distinctive colors. He's eating mastic flavored ones. If you want to try it and your not in the UK most places sell it under the turkish or romanian names for it. Lokum or Rahat. They make other flavors now, BTW.
LOL, "This witch is gay"! Barbera Kellerman was in all the BBC Narnia stories and this role is her best. I thought she was a little bit scary when I was a youngster watching this.
