Good video Chris, I think I'll show this to my potential customers too when they are comparing quotes, I always charge a full day at £300, I get about half of the jobs I quote for but that's fine with me!
Makes me laugh when potential clients are willing to give their money to cowboys, then nitpick when you tell them all you need to do for a proper job.

23:52 i chuckled there... the last batch of EICRs I commissioned was about 4 years ago (due for renewal soon)... the spark (who came recommended and is well reviewed) did a block of 6 flats in less than a day; the building is electric-only too so it's dual boards in every flat with storage/panel heating. great video.

Ditto.... best thing is at my old house my landlord got some dodgy electricians in, but thanks to chris n the gang i questioned everything they did on the sheet n told the landlord they didnt even look at the wires etc although they put down they did a full test inc taking socket n switches off.

Have ever thought about doing the ring test from a socket outlet. It saves disturbing the board and is often more accessible. It's also easier to differentiate the two legs and it also counts as a point of inspection.
I fit a 6mm to outbuildings as a minimum, regardless of the run you never know what the next guy is going to decide to install in an outbuilding it’s always best to future proof especially when a cable is being buried. You did the right thing with that 2.5 top man 👍🏻
Hmm, I install whatever size cable Ive calculated, taking into account Ib and length of run etc
I've been on all sorts of prescriptions for Hayfever over the past 10 years (which for me flares up only in May and June). The one 'treatment' though which I've found works best is Vaseline around the nostrils to catch the pollen and a Boots eye spray.
So true when testing a ring...praying it's complete!!
I feel your pain with the Hayfever...have a word with your GP. They have access to some good antihistamines that don't make you drowsy. Fexofenadine is my current hayfever treatment.
Fexofenadine hydrochloride is very good I agree, but the side affects can be horrible (lower back pain for me).
My GP would only give me cetirizine yold me to take twice a day but it makes me so groggy.
150mg of fexo for me, spot on and never had side effects 10 years in

I was a sparky back in 90s, you are very good at your job. Having a kitchen extension done and needed a reminder how it's wired up. Then had a bit time to watch the rest of your videos.
What I have found is people are willing to pay £500 plus for a guy in a suit to basically make sure the house is there, where he will put down that everything requires a specialist to check, that's a so called survey.
Yet think it's expensive if an electrician turns up and charges £200 - £300 for an inspection. A lot of these people get what they deserve, because they would have phoned several people for prices and gobfor the £50 merchant, I have seen it to many times, and I have no sympathy with them.

The old red and black wiring for the sockets could have a 1mm cpc instead of a 1.5mm buts its hard to see from the video
0.22 x 1.67 = 0.36 expected cpc measurement for a 1.5mm cpc but 0.22 x 2.5 = 0.55 expected cpc measurement for a 1mm cpc, which isn't too far away from 0.59 but again cant really see what size it is

I'm sure you know already but I don't think you mentioned it, BS7671 does indeed say that greater than 1MOhm is a pass, however guidance note 3 states that less than 2MOhm may signify a latent defect. I haven't carried out electrical work for quite a few years now though, so please feel free to correct me.

Great honest work Chris. Meggering will actually cook off any water in the cable or enclosure, when the water cooks off the core to core impedance increases.
Chris, nice to see you’ve changed your opinion on earthing the metal back box to the faceplate. I was watching a video of yours made 2 years ago and you said it wasn’t necessary to wire the box to the socket as the screws did the job.

We carry out a lot of EICRs, the fault on the sockets are common. I would class that as fault finding and is not part of the EICR, this isn't a criticism for you fixing the fault that's a good thing for the client but in a world of tight margins I would leave it for the fault finding after. Fair enough if that was the only thing wrong with the installation to save a revisit but there are quite often more things to fix so I would advise that the testing be carried out and any observations be recorded. Then agree with the customer any additional costs. I do like the videos by the way.. keep up the good work!
A job done thoroughly is a job well done. The hay-fever gets in the way of everything. I have tried everything to get shot of it, nothing stops it 100%.

Those '"I'll just fix that, only takes me a minute or so" jobs can escalate badly though!
I spent last week in a place where they specified light switches with neons that illuminate when the lights are off, so the switches are easier to find. Mate told me "One neon on the fourth floor doesn't work, even after replacing the neon insert! Have a look, maybe a jumper wire has come loose!"
Turned out the jumper had been missing in the first place but the whole setup was so dodgy that I ended up spending more than half a day fixing the back boxes and wiring in two rooms up there. Background story: masonry back boxes on the continent are plastic and have been since the late 50s. They're not flame retardant though, so they have no business being near any timbers. Older boxes were metal but insulated with some kind of tar paper instead of earthed since circuits weren't necessarily earthed back then. Nowadays, that insulation is no longer considered sufficient, so all metal boxes need to be replaced. Dry-lining boxes are flame-retardant but only have a 3-mm lip so the holes need to be quite precisely 68 mm diametre.
What I found when I removed those switches was a mix of plastic masonry and metal boxes sunk into huge holes in timber panelling so I couldn't just put in dry-lining boxes. I ended up cutting a 19 mm pine board with holes the right size to cover the original mess. Looks a bit mediaeval but that's the whole point of a castle I guess. I even used hand-forged decorative screws to fasten the boards to the wall.
Ideally the whole place needs a full rewire but since the budget is tight that's not going to happen. We're doing one room at a time in cooperation with the local electrician. Should only take 30 years or so.
As a bonus, in 30 years you'll need to start from the original neons again because they'll be too old...
@@demoniack81 I suspect I'll have to replace them even more often. Most of the current ones are from the 1980s and failing one by one but apparently new ones are a lot less long-lived than those.

Just paid £163 for a sparky to do an eicr on a 4.5 year old flat to renew the eicr. I’m all for checks but the latest regs are crazy and should line up with builders. Our flat is now only satisfactory as it doesn’t have a fire rated consumer box. Begs the question why Berkeley’s didn’t install them.
The 6A breaker in 16:00 seems newly added it didn't had that discoloration like the other breakers. Perhaps for a (temporary) light . Outdoors at the door?

You and I think the same way Chris. So many defects can be nothing worse than creep or wire broken in the contacts in a switch or socket, or where Mr DIY or "Stetson Electricals" (clue in the hat) have had their grubby fingers on the installation to spoil it. But at least your rings were still rings.

Just asking as I have come across a couple of type b’s when testing ev installs.
So with the sockets are you just pushing it in and out and switching it until it works then job done? Given reading was high why not just open it and not faf about with the on off in out routine?
We have always been advised to count double sockets as 2 points. Just saying
1. Bloke won't even test it
2. Bloke will test it and wont do nothing about it
3. Bloke will test it and rectify it
4. Bloke will test it and call up client after testing the whole property to let them know what needs sorting, and if its as simple as replacing a socket he will fix it. Then give them a "satisfactory". If requirements are met
I don't fix stuff without confirming with clients or estate agents. I've been burnt too much, by landlords especially " I didn't agree to that" even if its a bloody c1. Had a landlord scream at the estate agent because i replaced a completely burnt out cooker isolator you could see it from the outside and the agent agreed to fix it before asking the landlord because it was such an obvious thing that needed sorting ASAP the c**t refused to pay and the agents got rid of him and payed me out of their own pocket
hi chris or to anyone else. Should you earth backboxes? i have changed a few sockets in my house to double from single. The single metal backboxes weren't earthed to start with so i followed suit and didnt earth the double metal backboxes. Also the sockets are plastic not metal faceplate ones.

If there's a fixed lug on the back box, no need. But also make an assessment on potential damp or corrosion. Much easier to just earth the back box, its good practice and takes seconds, not worth omitting it.
Another awesome video Chris!!! You do such a fantastic job!! I’m a level 2 adult learner and always find your videos really helpful! I hope you don’t mind me asking and please don’t rip me to shreds guys for probably asking a daft question but was the CPC resistance higher than expected on the end to end CPC test at 4:49mins? If the CPCs were 1.5mm2 the expected resistance is around 1.67 times the value of R1 or Rn (so 1.67x0.20= 0.33ohms) but it looked a bit higher during the testing. I assume this is probably higher due to the way the CPCs have been terminated and the state of some of the sockets but I’m just interested in how high the reading would have to be to raise alarm bells? Apologies if this is a daft question and no doubt a tolerance is given in one of the regs but i just haven’t got there yet in my studies 👍
Correct old terminations over time. Socket condition was terrible and this place is terribly damp due to the basement. I believe this is also a factor for the really poor insulation resistance readings on that particular circuit.

R1 Rn test is a good idea also, short circuit currents is a underestimated test imo i like to take my end to end loop readings r1 r2 and divide by 4 for the expected reading i also do a calculation for volts drop of ring lvd=11.5x1000/ib x mvam/4 x ct 1 i use ct 1 correction factor to err on caution this gives me a clue on the length of cable , nice software good call on the socket replacements hope your keeping well mr cjr
What a crap hole! 😂 I see metal clad switches and sockets not earthed with a fly lead all the time. Pet hate of mine. It's prob cheaper to rewire that place than spend days sorting all the dodgy wiring.

On a fig 8 "R1 + R2" test for Ring finals ( CPC (r1) and Line (r2) crossed) on a perfect ring - shouldn't all outlets give the same reading ? ( that is : a fig 8 test effectively creates a "circular circuit" where each test always measures resistance across a diameter - hence the resistance will always be the same - irrespective of which point ( diameter) is under test
Correct if you test behind the socket on the cables but if using a plug in tester you will get various readings due to the resistance in the socket pins

For hay fever a guy I work with says that you should buy local honey, since he started to eat honey pollinated in his area, he’s not had hay fever.
Frazer Telford That's actually true. It takes time, but the theory is that you develop a tolerance for the pollen from which the honey is made. It has to be local honey rather than supermarket stuff from god knows where, because your hay fever will be affected by the local flora.
I suffer a lot with hay fever, but it is exacerbated by other pollution. I found an air purifier made a massive difference, I run it 24 / 7 to keep my bedroom as particle free as possible and it has transformed my life, I no longer wake up feeling like I have been run over.
"This tester is fantastic",(at time 3:35. Yes, it should be at about GP Pounds 1,600 on Ebay. Certainly massively more expensive that my ordinary ohm-meter (but, hey, it does so much more!!!!).

Im not doing it myself reason why im asking is ive had 2 electricians say 2 different things.. one even said he could take it off kitchen supply which i thought be strange
I'm Canadian, NOT UK trained, but a Hot Tub would seem to me to have too high a current draw to be on anything other than a dedicated circuit (ie. it's the only thing on that circuit). Here in Canada (and I believe most/all the USA) Hot Tubs MUST be on a dedicated circuit...

Hi chris when testing a ring circuit on an eicr do you do a figure eight test on the line and neutral. Thanks keep up the good work 👍
Depends what you are testing for, and what sort of problems you expect. If you are only really looking for polarity and every socket being suitably earthed, then no need even to switch off.
The result of the fig 8 test is a maximum R1 +R2 value, that reads the same at every socket that is not a spur, equivalent to (once reconnected as a ring) to the R1+R2 you would have had if you had one wost case socket diametrically opposite the feedpoint. (assuming same cable cross section and not a mix of 2.5mm and imperial )
Its good for finding spurs, and of course checking the ring is not broken. But, unless you have good reason to suspect its been tampered with, then there is no need to do it (though the numbers of wires to be separated is the same if you suspect the ring is broken and wish to check the ring round.)

Hi mate, I’m new to being a sparky, what’s the flux capacitance of them MCB’s? And do you set the phasers to milky on your tester?
The flux levels are set to medium but you can adjust them up to high but be careful of time travel. My tester is set on strawberry but I do believe there is a milky function on the Kewtech kt69plus

I think the KA rating of the MCB is the number in the box on it, 6000 = 6KA. I’m not sure why they give you daft options on your software for it, or am I getting confused with disconnection times?
cumberland1234 it’s to confirm that you have checked the protective device can break the full fault current expected in the event of short circuit without destroying itself
tomorichard Thompson yep, on the video at 2.05 Chris says KA breaking capacity 0.4 which is only 400A. I think it is meant to be 6KA.

What happens if you do an insulation test but miss a spur or plugged in appliance for example, say the boiler or something. I assume this sort of thing must happen from time to time with electrics that have been added to over the years. I know what could physically happen to the boiler or other connected appliance so my question is more relating to you as an electrician avoiding any catastrophes? Any anecdotal evidence of this situation? Is this worthy of a video?
Always start your live and neutral testing on 250v then you will know if you’ve got a hidden appliance still plugged in without the fear of damaging it. Once you get the all clear you will get a reading of hopefully over 200megohms you can then upscale to 500v and hopefully achieve greater than 500megohms
