- The Quintessence Saxophone Quintet in its quintessential line-up plays J.S.Bach's Fugue in G Minor. This arrangement of a famous Bach piece ist the lucky charm of the band, giving them great success. It is indeed a fine showpiece of musicianship. At last you can enjoy a up-to-date version of the fugue, recorded last year at the CD release party for the "Vivaldi's Five Seasons" in April 2008.

This has convinced me that I NEED my own bari...
I'm crying
Our musicteacher showed us this in school. Love it! Fave.
Masterful arrangement. I love how you guys alternate saxes from one register to another. Brilliant.
The best non-keyboard version I've ever heard of this. Really great!
I must say I've watched this close to about 19 times and i must say this is quality work! Great enjoyable music to listen to :)
Quelle merveille !!!
Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor is my favourite song, and I'm pleased to say that you five did it more than justice.
Who says that baroque music can't be fun?
p.s. The alto sax nailed that entrance, and the bari plays my absolute favourite voice of the fugue. Superb performance, all five of you.
p.p.s. Were you trying to rush through the piece, or was the tempo alteration during the piece unintentional? :-)
this is the best thing i can say.
Its on the favourite list!!!
Amazing... I've been playing sax for 6 years now, and it's great to hear classical arrangements for it!
this is really inspiring i wish i could play like thant some day
@QuintSaxtet
you should come to London. It's very bad that so much people can't enjoy your music in this city!
You're brilliant
Well guys! I'm still here and playing the bari part, so everything' cool. Soon our new site will be up and running so if you fancy playing or learning the piece and playing it for us on TH-cam, that's where you can get the sheets. Thanks again for all your interest.
Hi, I can't remember what type the one that looks like a mini alto is, please could you tell me? :)
Edmund Scott Hi there, it's a bent soprano. It has a slightly different sound to the straight one.
Anatole Leopold Gomersall Thx, I was wondering what it was called, I want to buy one.
Anatole Leopold Gomersall usually the bent ones are more difficult to play in terms of intonation and stuff like this.
***** yes, why not? Great to hear that we inspire you to compose music. For obvious reasons it would be important to make clear that we are just the inspiration for your work. Thanks for your interest in our music, keep us informed.
That was fucking amazing. I might just watch this 10 more times before i go to bed.
The ONLY criticism for this video is that the baritone player came just a tad fast, other than that, perfect would be an understatement to describe this performance! I absolutely love this!
the tenor sax's sound is godly. Aaron
Wow the guy playing tenor on the far right was one of our judges for the k.88 jazz festival last march :)
these guys are incredible. i would LOVE to see them in concert. the bari sax player has an incredible sound
Dramatic performance!
Magnificent! Great tone from all the saxes, thanks so much!
My sax quartet at school played an arrangement of this fugue, and our style was inspired by you guys. We got a standing ovation. You people are hundreds of times more awesome than we are, though. Especially the bari. You're awesome.
Wonderful music, awesome saxophone quintet!
fantastic !!!!!!!!
Holy crap. I was stagnating in my practicing and desire to get better at playing my saxophone. Thanks for the attitude adjustment, fellas!
You guys are amazing. At my school, we put together a sax quintet and just purchased this song the other day, and we all can't wait to play it. We are all some of the best high school sax players in the state, but I'm not sure how well we will do at a piece this challenging. Thanks for the amazing example for us to follow, and I hope we can sound even a little bit as amazing as you guys. Quintessence rocks.
GLORIOUS!!
love it
Thank you very much, mitchmuz. We're be preparing a special version of this piece that is really unusual- should put a smile on your face! Watch this space...
Wonderful!
I just love the part that starts at 1:37. Just the amount a power and energy that Bach put into it. Just totally get's me pumped lol
What an amazing group of players. Well executed, I could hear every instrument as they entered. That vintage Selmer Tenor Sax with very little lacquer is absolutely gorgeous also!
My idols !!!!!! You're all great.
Fantastic...... Super....!!!
Amazingly tight, crisp sound! You guys play exceptionally well together and you all have great tones!! I like the curved soprano. Glad I found you on You Tube!!!
como mola este quinteto!!!!^^
Wow! This is wonderful! I can't stop listening to your videos. I like what you do! You're my idols!
Ahhhh, great tempo! Well done.
Wow that was amazing. Great recording, and fantastic perfomance. Was really a pleasure to listen to. Best regards from denmark
Davvero fantastico...Grandi!!
Esses caras são demais...muito bom!
Show! Muito lindo estes músicos!
Parabéns!!
bravo!!!!!!
You guys are Awesome! regards from Chile!
SUPER GRANDIOSE J ADORE
Wow! This is absolutely mind-blowing. You guys are UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!! :)
perfect!
@mismits4 that is a curved soprano sax. It's tuned to the same key as a tenor sax (Bb) while the alto sax (the next biggest instrument to the soprano) is tuned in the same key as the Bari sax (Eb, largest sax in the quintet). Hope this helps :)
Bravo!
so good
Whenever I hear this, your fudge fugue makes me dance through my living room.
It make my mother dance as well, by the way my mom´s 86. Take this as a real compliment
this is amazing! i play bari and i didnt think this piece would have the melody for it! you guys did fantastic and i am happy you guys put peace into this world :)
this gave me goosebumps :)
artist...... all is very good
@QuintSaxtet I play on an Otto Link 7* i love it! Just bought a Rovner ligature for it. This arrangement inspired me so much that i spent all day today and yesterday writing a fugue-ish piece for 5 saxophones =] Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift and inspiring me
!
This is so great. So so great. You just made the world better! :-)
Wow! Who knew saxophones could sound good! Awesome work!
My sax quartet is playing this for our S&E this year. Lol I'll be rocking out on the sick bari line =)
@ChairInTheSky Thanks, ChairInTheSky! We really enjoyed playing for you all and hope to have made an impression- WE WANT TO PLAY LOADS OF GIGS IN THE STATES!
Playing this for an ensemble festival in Idaho, I'd have to say it's coming together quite nicely, thanks for the arrangement guys! Hope to send you guys our finished product so you can see the work we put into your piece :)
As a Alto saxophone player I have to say that this piece is GREAT.And the performance was amazing.
Demasiado bueno!
Simply I love you!
Enhorabuena. Muy bonito. Muy limpio.
totally diggin the stash; bari sax player rox
Cool!
can you put more video with your quintet...more about bach and mozart:D thx!!:P
This is sheer genius, and an unbelievably simple and effective answer to a difficult question, how does one make one of the greatest fugues of all time contemporary, new? Most artists change the melody itself, or internal dynamics such as time, but this isn't anything like that. You utilized the different tones of the saxophone to give each of the fugues voices its own personality, based on its role in the piece, without actually changing the piece itself
I will remember Quintessence.
@Soh962 I do too! Bach was such a genius, but I have to say, after clicking the 1:37 marker, you could actually hear the baritone player mess up! He played the wrong note, then quickly corrected it, you can check.
I clicked on this for a laugh - and it kicked my ass! O_O
That's insane. I had a rough time memorizing marching band songs.
Fcking amazing....
素晴らしい!素晴らしい!最高の演奏でした!
Letteralmente stupendo.
@davkilla101 Thanks for your comment and your compliments. As you have perhaps noticed, we all play open mouthpieces and have a high dynamic output. This can be especially felt in pieces such as Summer III. I think it's primarily the collective experience bonus when one plays everything from memory.
damn i wish we sounded like that, playin this for state solo and ensemble, we are playing this for state solo and ensemble
i myself play 4 kinds of saxophones....and i am really happy i found this video :)= I can finally show it to my music colleagues and say sax groups can make good music too ... I really enjoyed it, almost as Presto from Vivaldi-but that is just so fantastic that it cant be reached :)=
I hope you ll play in central Europe soon.
Bravíssimo
WOWWWWWWWWW BRAVOOOO
@builder9165 The line-up is (from left to right) alto, soprano, baritone, tenor, tenor. the first tenor on the right is not lacquered, that's why it looks different.
Perfeito
Man u guys can make the soprano even look cool!
damnnn i've been left speechless..
Anatole's beard is so cool!
@TechRyan88 Nope. Soprano. HIs website said this was his set up.Soprano: Yanagisawa 9930 SC with Bari Hawk II Bahn 8 & Rico Jazz Select unfiled 3M It's just a curved soprano.
I've often regret playing the saxophone in my high school days but you guys always remind me what beautiful music a saxophone can make. If only I could play as beautifully as you guys :(
Why would you regret it?
Quick question, what mouthpiece is the bari sax using? is it a meyer? You guys sound amazing by the way. I am 17 and i play tenor sax, i'm going to college next fall for music education with a concentration in the sax and i write for quartets and such. Great sound you guys have!
I was wanting to purchase this song, do you know where I could get it
Обворожительно! Великолепно!
@xXShadowBlackwingXx hi there. It's a Lawton Bronze Mouthpiece. Were discontinued but the son has taken over the business. Well crafted and a joy to play. I've changed in the meanwhile to a Otto Link 9- it's got more punch and an even fatter sound.
Muito Bom
I wish I could slowdown this a little so I could enjoy more of this perfection.
le bar on dirait un petit diable (suis bari et je l'adore...suis pas grand non plus)
salutations a toi....
is there a cd of these guys available somewhere?
righteous!
Jest sztos chłopaki! Pozdrowienia z Irlandii
Hey Im a senior in highschool and was hoping to play the Fudge Fugue in a Saxophone quartet for solo ensemble this year. We've got a saprano alto tenor and bari. Do you know were we could find some sheat music?
Hi, great performance... Would you be able to share the arrangement with the world for this performance? =_)
BRAVO!!! Bravissimo!!! Damnnnnnnnnnnn!!! lol :)
First of all, Feniminal Job with this degree of difficulty! Are there 2 tenor saxophones? What is that tiny sax?
It's the little fugue! :D
Fudge fugue is the E minor one right? If i'm not mistaken.
