  • UPDATE: Fans of space-based sci-fi games can check out the Facebook group for "Nexus 2: The Gods Awaken" here:
    / 322566457842122
    This is the tech demo for the proposed sequel to Mithis Entertainment's AWESOME space combat game, Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. A few of the goodies you'll see here are planet surfaces so real you could touch them, giant spaceships, fighters doing trench runs straight from Star Wars, and ice cube shields(!).
    A game like this would be like having the battles of Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (especially its awesome-looking Season 4), Star Trek, and for good measure, Star Wars all on your computer, where YOU call the shots and every last explosion. Don't let such marvelous potential be consigned to the trash heap of gaming history!
    Also, the original Nexus: The Jupiter Incident has been released on Steam for paid download! Show your love and make sure others who weren't able to get the game in a box know of this new way to experience one of the best space combat games in recent years. You can buy it here:
    store.steampowe...
    NOTE: This video has annotations added to make it seem like an ingame cutscene (just with dialogue balloons instead of voice clips). To get the full effect, you should watch it at least once without the annotations, then turn on the annotations to expand the experience. For fun, see how many references to existing sci-fi series you can identify in the annotations!
    You can download the original video file (but without the annotations) here:
    www.gamefront.c...
    This video features samples from the Linkin Park song "Session." Many thanks to Sargoth85 for uploading the original file.

    Even if it never comes out, you may want to check out the original. I've found it in a number of surprising places--you may too. More than enough space-operatic destruction for any Space RTS fan, and the combat engine is a breath of very fresh air for those looking to create mods for other sci-fi series, like Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, and Star Trek.
    Glad you wrote!

    It took me few seconds to realize "normal mapping" came in around 2004 so it was still a new thing. (AFAIK nexus still used weird mix of bumps) Anyway nexus left had huge impact on me and showed a new direction of ship control and "really dark epic exploration". I already imported all the models from old nexus into UE4 and really look forward to make some cool videos with ships i love in up to date graphic keeping the spirit of this gem alive...

    Yep, that's why included "trench runs straight from Star Wars" right in the vid description.
    The "Highly Detailed Giant Spaceships" appear to be a combination of Noah and advanced Vardrag technology. The general shape is similar to the Colossus support ship from the first game, and the colour scheme, the drive layout, the hangar gates, and the 3 connected circles symbol on the sides of the ship all speak of Vardrag design.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's called "suspension of disbelief." They had to make concessions to "keeping the viewer's interest."
    Friction on Earth slows everything down--in space a push in one direction will keep you moving indefinitely, but we don't intuitively know that. In the original game ships would keep thrusting at their maximum combat speed to tell the viewer it's still moving (in real life it would not need to keep applying thrust, just drift at the desired velocity).
    The "heat distortions" are another.

    It was for game balance issues that lasers only damage devices. They actually do a small amount of hull damage with every hit (even through shields), and it does add up if you're facing Gorg or Vardrag ships.
    If you're playing with Ghost ships, their laser-spamming can disable a ship in seconds or even destroy it!
    Maybe IP drives or shields make lasers useless beyond a certain distance in Nexus' universe? That's likely why we don't have the enormous laser arrays found in hard sci fi here.

    It's the easy-to-play titles that pay, and it's the money that keeps the publishers alive, so there's often very little incentive to do things that are revolutionary or require a lot of thinking through.

    If it's possible to the weapons fire as momentum sources in and of themselves, then yes, that may happen. Even so, the ships (except for those of the Vardrags) themselves in the original game obey physics quite well--they don't stop turning unless they apply thrust to stop their momentum, they have well-placed thrusters to turn in all three axes, etc.
    They're good at giving the appearance of massive ships obeying the laws of physics.

    Because this game hasn't been released yet, we don't know. The original game used an eye-of-god view, that you could change to any angle. There was no option to have a "bridge commander" view from inside the ship, but you didn't need it to have total control over any ship's components in your fleet--you could turn any device on or off, as you pleased.

    @WishSmack This game was one of the first well-done title to feature fully-3D combat where ships could go in any direction and attack (or be attacked) from any orientation. Not like Homeworld or Haegemonia: Legions of Iron in which every ship had to return to the same vertical orientation, so it was more like playing in a stack of pancakes rather than a true-3D battlefield.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's all the more frustrating when you imagine how much better-looking the battles might be today had Nexus survived to make great sequels.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "Siege Laser" is the most impressive of all the beam weapons, and if all beam weapons did significant hull and shield damage, battles would be over far too soon.
    The main weapons are the Energy Shells and Slugthrowers because they can be dodged or decoyed with ECM more effectively, so as to enhance the epic feel. I frankly find that a conscious (and effective) decision made by the devs rather than reducing the game to a contest of who can focus fire the fastest with the most.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can say that again!
    Its combat and physics engine would be well-suited to many space combat TV shows, too.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Exactly. In Nexus every ship is practically a character in and of itself.
    You can't spam battleships like you can in Homeworld, you won't hear "frigate lost" every few seconds in Nexus, and you better make sure every missile counts, because they can be destroyed real easily with fighters or flaks!
    I miss this game's brilliance . . .

    What's even more blindingly awesome is how well-suited this game is to emulating epic space battles from popular sci-fi franchises like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Babylon 5!
    Search for "Star trek enhanced space combat nexus" to find a great video of a new Star Trek mod for this game. There is also a great new Nexus mod, called "Stargate: The War Begins" as well.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, the "offensive stance" button will take care of everything except mechanoids. They will attack ships without shields with slug-throwers, and divide their weapon attacks as necessary.
    But if you want fine control (such as focussing all weapons on a single target, or using your lasers to disable specific devices) you're best off opening the command panel and assigning the actions yourself while using the pause button.
    This isn't babysitting, it's the fun of having total control.

  • @Mazryonh
    @Mazryonh  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Star Trek: Bridge Commander tried that, and for some reason it was never done again.
    And yes, I agree that the blue battleship looks like a Noah battleship upgraded with Vardrag tech (you can tell by the circular markings, the engine structure, and the overall blue hue).
    Be sure to sign the petition if you don't want potential like this to rot away!

    Actually, there's more fighter action than you might think in the original game. While you can't control the fighters yourself, there's lots of roles they can play. Fighters are for space superiority (against bombers and gunboats), gunboats are for pure device destroying (even through shields) and bombers are for pure hull damage through shields. Pretty chaotic mix, all that fighter firepower.

    One thing I loved in nexus 1 and in this vid is the fact that when the spaceship are destroyed, they don't just "explode"" and vanish. There are multiples explosions, you can actually feel the ship being torn apart. And then, a huge explosion, the ship died in a blow of light, taking away some of its opponent in it's last glorious act.

    @Sargoth85 Good to see you here. I remember seeing this on the gametrailers website and I knew it had to reach a wider audience. Who asked you do to that, anyhow?
    LONG LIVE NEXUS: TJI!

    Actually, you can get a better chance of disabling the ship's components if you disable the ship's deflection/combat drive first, so they have a harder time maneuvering devices out of the way.
    It's true that the weapon and shield generators are difficult to hit (because they have only one hitpoint, whereas the engines and weapons have several). That's why you call your two destroyers to do the job for you. Device-disabling is about weakening the opposition, after all.

    In actuality, the "trace gases" would be almost always far too thin for sound to propagate through. Even being close to an exploding ship full of gas would only result in the faintest of whistling as the gas blows past your ship.
    In BSG, when Cavil "lusts after dark matter," if he were close enough to a supernova, he'd feel a hell of a wind as the star goes boom. A hell of a shockwave and radiation blast too, so if you're within "earshot," you'd likely be disintegrated.

    @Sargoth85 Well, as you can see by the signatures on the petition and the excellent ongoing mods for the original game, the hype is already there. The fans (myself included) greatly enjoyed N:TJI1 and are waiting for news that Nexus 2 is on the way. The ball's in HDi's/Mithis' court now, or whomever their successors are. When/if they're ready, we'll be here to offer our full support.

    i loved the first game, i would definitely pay for a second. Kickstarter sounds like a great idea for that.

    Here's an easier method; on every enemy ship except mechanoids and locusts, you can just set the stance to "Offensive" and just have your selected ship use the "approach" command. They'll tear off in search of something to frag after destroying that enemy, using anti-shield or anti-hull weapons as appropriate.
    Yes, the game won't play itself; that's why there's manual control and why I like it. It's a bit like a puzzle in one of the most beautiful worlds I've seen.

    I know that about the map. The "character levelling" was also rushed just in the sama way. For N2 a system like in Star Wolves (points are earned through the missions, then they are freely invested in various passive or active talents) would be very cool.

    I recently read a book about "Unbreakable Business Laws" that said that you always get "fairly compensated for your work in the end."
    If only that held true in the gaming industry, where quality doesn't seem to matter much, where promising IPs are devoured by larger companies and are never seen again, and where beauty like this rots in vaporware hell forever.
    "You get out what you put in?" Please.

    That's because the Mechanoids are "special case" enemies that you should fight manually. Almost everything else you fight doesn't need those special weapons.
    Try setting your ship's stance to "focussed" (the far right side of the stance buttons) and then after equipping your ships with energy skeeters, set them to "use special weapons" on the Mechanoids.

    Oh my God... I didn't know that second Nexus was planned. It looks fucking amazing! Even the first old Nexus looks great if you set the game resolution on 1680x1050 via regedit.
