The Erie-Lackawanna Railroad was formed by the merger of the Erie Railroad with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in October, 1960. In this fascinating Two Disc Set by 16mm film photographer Emery Gulash, you will see the very beginning of the merger paint schemes, coupled with the variety of locomotive equipment garnered from the two roads.
Disc one begins with 1962 early generation diesels and post merger paint schemes in the western end states: Ohio and Indiana.
The action moves to the eastern end of the railroad in the states of Pennsylvania and New York with freight action and electric commuters.
Emery then chases a steam powered fan trip over the former Erie Railroad main line to Binghamton, and this is the prelude to continuing action on Disc two.
Disc two continues with the 1973 steam fan trip chase, now runnung on Delaware, Lackawanna & Western trackage. You will see spectacular action and impressive scenes of the Tunkhannock Viaduct and other landmark locations.
More eastern end freight and commuter action follows. The return to the western end in 1974 takes this Heritage DVD to the finale of E-L merger with the formation of Conrail in 1976.

Man, watching this brings back so many memories. Its truly amazing how so many things have changed over the years.
My hat's sure off to the Erie Lackawanna people. Like those great folks at Penn Central, they just kept on truckin', trying like all get out to get the job done, running those trains on some awful track ( notice the rocking, shaking cars rolling over that track ), and the Lackawanna paint scheme was a beautiful one. Also interesting to me was their propensity for handsome F-units and those monster SD45's.
Love those shots at Marion OH! Still a great railfan location and if you get a chance to see a demonstration inside AC Tower you will be amazed. Incredible system for the time.
Fantastic! I remember the big grey EL locos rolling through my town Binghamton NY.
The colors and logo made the trains look so industrial-cool. I miss them!
I enjoyed that. Used to ride my Yamaha CT3 175 enduro on the side of the RR in sussex county, nj from 1973 to 1983 on elevated tracks going through green twp into andover, stanhope/netcong. During this period the RR had stopped running by 1972. Great memories, well done enjoyed🎅🎄🇺🇸👍
My father worked the NEPA NJ freight for many years. Before the passenger from Scranton to NYC. On call for work .... Secaucus, Elizabeth, Northumberland, autos to the Pocono area, Portland Binghamton, Port Jervis. When I was a kid in the 60’s my friends had train sets.....I had real trains!
My dad worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad for 48 years . we saw him only on the weekends.

I really liked seeing Marion, Oh at the beginning. I grew up in that neighborhood by those tracks and train station. That area around the train station up to Kenton Ave and back into the city of Marion, Oh is wayyy different now. It actually looks much better then the run down look in this video.
Great views of Marion ohio.my great grandfather worked for the erie / erie Lackawanna for 53 Years out of Marion. And rode the EL to Chicago
+Jeffrey Radek It is sad how much of the EL is gone especially in my home state of Indiana. Revelation Video (website currently under rebuild) carries a few great EL DVDs that capture the personality of the EL and its history, featuring great classical scores where original audio wasn't available. "EL Legacy" and "West End" are favorites of mine.
This was very nicely made and the music complements it so well. I wish something like this could be made for the Atlantic Coast Line railroad as well as the New Haven.

Having a VHS copy of this series myself, I've seen the end credits and the song used in the intro is credited as "Forget Me Not" by Chappell Music.
But either way, you're telling me that this piece isn't Public Domain?
I have this DVD I promise you won be disappointed its great will make you long for the olde days. buy it !!
The EL could not have survived into the 1980's on it's own. Agnes simply moved up the inevitable. But to this day I wonder if another railroad might have grabbed the west end with it's generous right of way had the railroad survived longer. Marion is just sad to me w/o the EL.
I remember checking this program out several times from my local library. I once had the chesapeake public library's entire train video listing printout! Yeah, talk about train addict!! Green frog has an insane $25 DVD pack goin on where you can get this program and the New York Central Odessey and bonus footage. should check it out. I got the CSX collection which is just stellar in my opinion for the same price. That one has the magnolia cut off and all of the original green frog CSX series
Not seen here, but with EL's passenger service gone by 1970, the road began using it's E8's in freight service. Was this because they didn't have the cash for new locomotives? It was a highly unusual practice to run those passenger units on freights. Would be great if there were footage of that. Didn't a couple of other roads use this same unusual practice - E8's on freight trains?
I'm sure one if the scenes in the intro were a pair of E's on a freight train.
love the old semaphore signals, i doubt you can find any of them today in the usa that are still in service.

I wonder where that shot was at 0:44 it could be Kouts, LaCrosse or North Judson Indiana. Sure looks like it as they had those style semaphore signals on those gigantic brackets.

Yeah that is a mistake (Jaxs C), like Ronnie said EL C424 are #2401-2415 and were delivered in this Black with Gold trim and only C424 were painted this way and the lead unit is also #2402 !!! and the early radiator sides are more flush on the early C424's that is clearly seen on the trailing C424s.EL C425s were #2451-62 and were delivered in Grey, Maroon, Yellow w/Black roofs. Maybe your not into Alcos as mush but all this info is in many books or the web. I have many of these videos and and there are mistakes often. Hope this helped. : )
This is about milepost Q23.7 or so just south of the south end of the yard. I'm not sure when CSX finally pulled out of South Hammond for good. I know they switched a few industries there until maybe 1990 or 1991So the South Shore is going to run trains along this line? How far will the trains run on this line? I remember reading about this elsewhere, but no one was sure if the South Shore was going to expand. All of the tracks in Munster are still there, btw. Cool video. I'm wondering. Did the Erie railroad build the main east west rail line through warren pa?

It was the late summer of '72 when the EL went bankrupt. Or towards the latter part of that year because they just received the new SD-45-2s . I

We had to remove the music on a number of our earlier clips due to copyright restrictions on TH-cam!

I doubt many people rode the Chicago-NY trains on the EL. They didn't look too impressive. Nice to see them though after reading about them in old Official Guides. The right of way through Indiana is mostly torn up
