Thank you so much for making this video! I have been searching for a brief but rich portrayal of what sociocultural anthropologists do. Most videos I've found are full length lectures. This will complement my lecture in an introductory class.
Anthropology isn't just the study of "native cultures", at least not anymore. It's the study of all types of cultures and humans. As you saw in the video, there are anthropologist who study other scientists! Anthropology has a great to say about globalization actually.
i am a genetic engineer as far as my bachelors go..i have worked in the advertising agency business a bit but wanted to find a question that would best sum up all of my curiosities as a whole..and that naturally was what are we? what are we doing here? and where are we headed..this brought me to take up anthropology for my masters program..and i hope to use bits of my knowledge from genetics, consumer behaviour etc in this glorious field..this video makes me feel good about my choice..
Anthropologists of course can work for media, schools, govnerment and companies. Some people are already quite successful doing them with anthro degree.
I love anthropology-cultural, linguistics, and archaeology. I'd like to ask anyone: Couldn't anthropologists work for a magazine or a tv show as a travel writer?
Excellent vid! I just did a vid with biological anthropologist Dr. Paula Skye Tallman who worked with the indigenous people of Peru. The process you describe is exactly what she does. What fascinating work! Thanks for the insight!
@@christygreen8245 Omg wow flash from the past. I ended up switching into Psychology, then Cognitive Science at UC Berkeley. Then I dropped out in my Senior year because of mental illness and drug abuse. Later diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenic. Currently going through recovery process, I am a year and a half sober, living in an SLE, and working on going back to finish my degree.
Yes, there are several types of anthropologist. Anthropology is a very broad field of study because it's essentially the study of humans. For examples, there are anthropologists who focus on studying human evolution, others might study how people think about and do religion, some even study how people create communities in cyberspace. If humans do it, anthropologists can study how they do it and ask why they do it.
Hey! Everything needs to be ADA compliant these days and I really like your video and want to use it in my online class, but your video has captions that are auto generated. You might think about have the captions actually done correctly so that we can use it for our classes because what you are showing is great and gives students a great capsule of what actual modern anthropologists are doing today, not what anthropologists did in the past, which is about all that can be found on films on demand. Thanks!
@@spamberlys Thank you soooooo much!! I'm leaving it up and just apologizing for leaving it up. I don't care if I get in trouble. There's not that many words that are off. It just shows such a great variety of fieldwork options for students to see. Thanks again for the quick response!
Traditionally anthropologists get jobs working for Universities or other research/teaching institutions. However, many anthropologists also work for organizations or companies that want to learn more about the people they provide services for. For example, Google has recently begun to hire anthropologists to help them learn how people use their products on an everyday basis.
@MrSmiles4miles Indigenous peoples aren't less modern than industrialized society...the exist n the same timespace we do. And the idea of what a "native" culture is is completely relative. Good point, though. Anthropology and sociology can be really similar at times.
@kriskahn21 Well that is great to know because you are right there is not much for non grad degree holders but that is why I asked because I had only ever really seen or heard of them getting jobs post doctorate at either a museum or as a professor @ a university. I just thought what a waste of great skill & of great minds, & those are the lucky ones who get those positions, what about the rest of them? the ones with good but not phenominal dissertations? I mean it is not like I have ever seen
I think it exists differences between Anthropology and Sociologym I accept they are not strong but exist depending the school that you belong... for example the sociology is more quantitative and anthropology is more qualitative and the anthropologist prefer the fildwork and sociology not much...the culture is the most central item in anthropology and the social interaction in sociology.
This 2008 video is out of date, factually. Consulting spaceweather.com we see that we are entering a period like the Little Ice Age. The Cultural Anthropology of Inuit people will be most useful in the next 100 years.
so you don't like antibiotics, properly vetted social policy, sustainable community development, or ensuring that cross cultural contact remains peaceful and relative, huh? Well at least you have an account on youtube to show how useful you are to humanity.

It's so rewarding to obtain a more personal experience when being engulfed in the subject one is studying. Thanks for making this video and sharing.
You're so welcome!

@ReginaMuse93 that is one of the thing that attracted me for Anthropology. I also think its a good basis for journalism.
I will be studying Anthropology/Ecology at the local Community College where I live. I very ,uch appreciate this information

Interesting to see how I would like to see how the Haitian community has changed in the greater Boston area since the Haitian earthquake of 2010.
im a junior in high school and im thinking about majoring in anthropology for college. and it's such a coincidence that I'm Haitian American!
How's it going?! :D

I'm failing to see how cheese fits in with the study of humans.
If cheese is part of that community's economics, then it is part of that society's culture.
humans make it. Some anthropologists also study animals (bees, cows...)
@minus30outside Anthropologists try to understand the social life of humans from a cultural perspective.

God's face is omnipresent. My channel proves it. The people who use 3% to 5% of their brains have not noticed. Go figure.
