The First Omen Spoilers: How the Film Went from NC-17 to R-Rated

When it comes to movie ratings issued by the MPAA, it's not always clear to the public why certain titles end up with the ratings they have. It's easy to understand why nudity and violence would elevate the rating of a movie, but what happens when a single but important shot puts your project in the dreaded NC-17 category? During an interview with Collider, The First Omen director Arkasha Stevenson revealed that they had to deal precisely with that situation in order to get the horror movie back to the R rating.
During the interview, Stevenson told Collider's Perri Nemiroff that the cause of all the hassle was ... a vagina.

i was shocked to see a scene of that nature in a movie theatre, more coming from a mainstream studio horror film. Arkasha really took a risk and did something that's honestly quite transgressive considering this is a high-budget, wide release horror movie being made by 20th century studios. You usually watch scenes of such daring nature in indie horror being made by self-funding filmmakers, in this case they dived all in thanks to Arkasha's vision. I'm positive it will do a lot for the way mainstream horror tackles taboo surrounding the female body in the future. Loved it

She seems so genuine and cool, what a great director!! Can’t wait to see what she does next. Sucks to hear about this rating battle, especially in such clear terms like this. It’s obvious what they think needs to be censored, which is sad

That was a pretty wild scene, maybe we'll see an alternate cut on bluray or just the deleted scene, either way it was a pretty great movie

It is sad and funny you can show internal organs spilling out, but not a female body part.

R? How obscene. I'm glad the film is only rated 14+ in 🇨🇦, or at least BC.
Most 14 YOs probably have already watched porn, and some even younger, so I don't see why that scene caused the MPA to clutch their pearls.
