Great troubleshooting video, reminds me of one that a former company of mine dealt with where the problem was the termination between sections of the meter Bank and the CT cabinet. If I recall correctly they had to replace the entire meter bank and CT cabinet with covid pricing and lead times.
Good one my guy. I'm sitting here the whole time saying, yelp yelp. Exactly how I do my inspections. Sometimes I think I talk to much to the customers, but I see i don't now. I like them to know whats going on.
100% your are there for 2 reasons. #1 solve the problem #2 make customers for life. Communication is one way to do that. Wait #3 make $$$$😁. Thank Bigmal for adding to the conversation. There are so many in the trade that hate to talk to customers. We all have skillz to work on. Trust me have you seen my panel installs or pipe bending....
I had one that lost a 120 volt leg a few months back. After check it we found a tree stretching the overhead wire going to the house from the pole. We turned it over to the electric company to fix.
@@bruceroberts4831 Depends on the call. Referrals are usually free. Otherwise we have a min $99 service call fee. Guys in Montana up'd there's to $149. Remember for us, this is to qualify the client not to make money. I want the sale and lifelong client not just a 249 for first hr fee etc.
Good video Jeff. Do they not let you cut the tag and pull the meter for inspection there? We cut tags and pull meters here all of the time to check the connections. Here the bottom connections of the meter socket are the responsibility of the customer.
Hey Duff, long time no see hope all is well. No in general most utilities don't want you touching the ring or tag. Same here in Montana as in Los Angeles. However if there is a "hazardous, fire" situation I'm not sure what they would say. In general with power out they will get a crew within the hour to remove rings. Same here with the bottom section. Truth is the entire thing meter socket even the undergrounds feed from the pole/transformer is still the responsibility to the owner. Utility just supply the incoming wire.
Yes, exactly. I did but the issue was it was already back on. I suspect that the heat caused the slight separation and arching, overnight cools off and power back on. Wasn't loose enough for me to hear arcing or feel any hot spots. I should have had the Flur onboard that may have shown up. Good call Tim!
Meter lugs are locked behind the meter ring. Had them call utilities when we figured out it's coming from utilities side. They pulled the meter and found the arc. Needs new bussing and meter socket. No lugs on this GE Mod unit. Basically, there are 2 female clamps between bussing and meter socket.
Jeff good video! I need to know next steps in my contracting company to get a crew of 2 on a van. I have a full time job and looking for tips to make this work. Help me out jeff. Thanks

For anyone thinking about becoming a contractor. Do it! Even if you dont use it that much, you could always make money if you loose your job. Electricians will always be needed and there will always be a homeowner in your area who will need electrical work done.
Yes right on the money, well we are still waiting for final numbers on the section but 2 service call, plus the actual repair (gut and swap) and the back office time to make the calls arrange the disconnect etc. What do you thin? Fair?
I’m curious how much electricians make out in Montana? I’m a California Journeyman but I also got certified in Montana( License #: ELE-EJ-LIC-52782) And in Utah to keep my options open because I want land. Now I’m pursuing my c-10 because I’d like to cut out the middle man out and make some real money and hopefully actually be able to afford a house in California. Theres A lot of paths to take in this field but I figure the more I get certified , the more ready I’ll be for whatever opportunities arrive for me and I’ll be able to create a bright future for my family.
WHY DOES NOBODY SEEM TO KNOW the right way to test for a bad breaker (and main breaker in a main panel): measure voltage drop! In this case, I’d to turn on loads (I bring a hairdryer for the purpose) and measure voltage DROP across service entrance/feeder leg and the load of the branch circuit breaker that is suspect. You should never see anything about 0.5V. If there’s any arcing in any part of the panel between where your measuring voltage drop, you will see it. The same goes for testing main breakers, MCBs, meter sockets, contactors - anything that makes a connection that can be bad. Same thing with service drop crimps: don’t measure for voltage; measure the voltage drop ACROSS what you suspect. You don’t even need to take anything apart except for the panel cover. You don’t need to untape split bolts cut off heat, shrinks, and barrel cramps or any of that. It’s such a sensitive test we even use it when we do maintenance checks on panels and other equipment. You’ll find a bad breaker BEFORE it fails or starts causing noticeable flickering of lights. It must be said, though, with the advent of LED light bulbs, every little issue shows up as flickering as there’s no filament persistence as there used to be in the incandescent lamps. 45yrs of chasing sparks

Actually the meter wasn't set properly. Clamps missed the bussbar. Not sure how, either manufacturer error or meter installer didn't pay attention. Now we need a new bussbar/4gang selection replaced. Just found parts after 4 months of searching. I'll have a follow up video I'm sure. What you said about loads would be correct if this wasn't an engineered already built building. Those calcs were done when they build the thing.

Great video Jeff. I love these real world experiences. Thanks for taking us with you!
Thanks for the support, means a lot. It's easier then it seems. Where you tuning in from
Hi Jeff, excellent diagnostic of finding the root cause of the problem.
Thank you, I'm glad you didn't find any code violations on our job...🤪
I had one that lost a 120 volt leg a few months back. After check it we found a tree stretching the overhead wire going to the house from the pole. We turned it over to the electric company to fix.
Yeah some times it's not a money maker. Did you charge a service call?
Where did you get that little service van from
Rangerdesign, our van sponsor. Link is in the description.
How much you charged for coming out the first time?

Do u think u might have found a possible problem on first call by just wiggling the meter ?
Yes, exactly. I did but the issue was it was already back on. I suspect that the heat caused the slight separation and arching, overnight cools off and power back on. Wasn't loose enough for me to hear arcing or feel any hot spots. I should have had the Flur onboard that may have shown up. Good call Tim!
Did you still charge for that Sunday service call??
I don't charge extra if they do the work (per say) if it was one of my guys yes emergency calls are charged.
Why did you not check the meter lugs
Meter lugs are locked behind the meter ring. Had them call utilities when we figured out it's coming from utilities side. They pulled the meter and found the arc. Needs new bussing and meter socket. No lugs on this GE Mod unit. Basically, there are 2 female clamps between bussing and meter socket.
