Yes you need to set on TDC before removing the cylinder head. And the new timing chain has yellow markings to line up on the sprockets. So its easy for setting up timing
He actually keep the car. The reason why overheated it was a broken plastic pipe near the heater hose, common problem on navara D40 diesel. Its a good car to keep
This engine design is poorly engineered crap and to make matters worse, if the engine is a few years old or been overheated, the MANY hard to access bolts and nuts will add days to the cylinder head removal. By far the worst I've ever seen in 40 years of doing this.

Yeh mate this engine is crap, and your right there are so many hidden bolts that very difficult to access.
