    I do enjoy your rigid approach to testing. I frequently reference your tests on P365 forums for those asking for a short barrel capable round.

    From all of the research that I've done on the barnes tac xp for 9mm velocity matters greatly. If it is going 1050fps it will expand sometimes through 4 layers of denim. If it's going over 1150fps you will have no problems with the denim plugging up the hollow point as in this test with the 95gr. I would much rather have a bullet that preforms like this one regardless of grain weight. The FBI standards are not what people should go by for self defense. If a bullet penetrates over 12 or 13 inches it is going to pass through. Not what you want unless the bad guys are standing in a line. So a bullet that penetrates 8 to 10 inches is all you need for self defense. At least that's my point of view.

    • @northernninety7
      @northernninety7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you know it will pass through? Ballistic gel is softer than the body. If it doesn't penetrate well in the gel, it won't do well in a body.

    • @stevencarnes7790
      @stevencarnes7790 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually ballistic gel isn’t Softer than the human body. Other than bones slowing the bullet down your skin and vital organs are not very tough. If you could draw straight line from your chest to your heart or lungs do you really think it’s more than 8 inches? Just something to consider when picking out self defense ammo.

    • @northernninety7
      @northernninety7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevencarnes7790 You do realize the 12 inch minimum in gel is not because they think the body is 12 inches front to back right? Gel penetration translates differently in a human body. Skin, organs, bone and thick blood are not nearly the same as gel.

    You do absolutely great work! I would like it if everyone did as good a job of testing ammo as you do, but then you wouldn't be the best, which you are now! I usually choose the cartridge you vote as the best, for the ammo I use in my carry piece. Thank you very much for the excellent job you do in testing carry ammo. I am not usually this effusive in my comments but you deserve it. Thank you for the great work you do.

    So please let me get everyone's opinion. I own two pistols at the moment. I own a Glock 26 and Glock 34. Right now I have Federal Premium Low Recoil 9mm 135 grain hydra-shok JHP in my Glock 26. In my Glock 34 I have two different rounds in two different magazine sets. Two of my four magazines have Hornady Critical Duty 9mm 135 grain +P FlexLock and in the other two I have Hornady Critical Duty 9mm 135 grain FlexLock. What do you guys think? I just would like opinions due to barrel lengths and such. Thanks! Awesome who you do ShootingTheBull410! Keep up the great work!

    (Pardon the punctuation and grammar I voice typed this )I was shot by a 40sw CorBon DPX in a break-in someone was trying to shoot around my feet to scare me because they saw I had a loaded gun on the table because I was actually doing private security & working for brinks at the time and I just got off work(so i had just taken off my "duty" belt and took my M&P out snd put it on the table) and passed out on the couch. He then broke into the house but when they shot at around my feet instead of hitting the floor like he later said he was trying to do they said they "had seen it in movies" and thought it would make me not reach my gun...but he accidentally hit my foot because he didn't know s**t about guns which is obvious if he's doing s**t he saw in movies which is obviously like a criminal thing to do
    The bullet almost blew my f*****g foot off it blew half of my tibia(ankle) bone off and about a quarter of my foot off just below the tibia(the wound or rather hole
    was about the size of a soft ball. It was like someone threw a soft going 2000 miles per hour at your ankle and hit it like 60% of my ankle. I had to get 27 reconstructive surgeries just to be able to walk again and have my foot they wanted to amputate it and five of those surgeries out of the 27 were just cleaning and debridement surgeries meaning that they had to pick out the pieces of metal and bone that many times they said it was much more than normal but they said they wanted to amputate which is why they went through such effort normally with that kind of damage they would amputate and they wouldn't go through that much work to do that but I freaked out about having my foot amputated off and I'm not going to lie I basically cried for almost a day not like straight throughout the day but you know when your foot's about to be amputated and you're in the hospital full of drugs you definitely become emotional with that kind of stuff so for about 2 days maybe a little more I can't remember I freaked out and was extremely emotional about it and eventually they said that they could call a plastic surgeon outside of the hospital and have him perform surgery on my foot to say that and my adopter father being a doctor himself actually freaked out on the hospital because he said they could have done that right when I got there they knew they were going to have to amputate it if they didn't call him and they could have made that choice long before that and possibly done better than they did and would have had a better outcome but because of their delaying we'll never know if it could have ended up being much better sadly I wasn't able to shoot the guy who hit me but I did have Windows security camera that was pretty well hidden and caught the guy coming into my apartment and leaving it and with that along with my description of the guy they actually caught him about 6 weeks later the crazy thing is is the gun he shot me with was one of the guns I had it wasn't going to carried on a daily basis he shot me with a sr40 Ruger and I carried a M&P 40 Smith & Wesson I actually had the exact same gun he had and after I got shot I just got rid of the gun I couldn't stand having the same gun that shot me for some reason it just really freaked me out inside it was almost like a PTSD every time I handled the gun or even shot the gun I would almost go into severe panic attacks I don't know what it was about it but just knowing that I'm holding the gun that was responsible for me losing the ability to walk for almost 2 years and almost losing my foot for some reason just really psychologically f***** me up and since then I've never bought another Ruger and gun I bought some Ruger rifles but I will never buy another Ruger handgun again because of that incident not to say it's much of a loss Ruger isn't known for their handguns they're known for their rifles more so I'm not a big fan of the Ruger handguns they're revolvers ain't bad but they're handguns in my opinion have awful triggers they're too clicky
    But because of being shot by that bullet I can definitely say that I now have a round that I'll probably use for the rest of my life and beside the federal HST the DPX is probably my favorite hollow point bullet I use both DPX and HST for almost every single handgun I have and probably always will I've try the number of different rounds tested them with Ballistic tests and just other types of tests as well and watch many of the videos this guy here has made but I don't think I'll ever find bullets better than those two before I was shot I really was into Hornady and their I think it's xtp round

      Just another crazy thing about all that is right when I had gotten hit I felt something but I looked down and I thought he had hit my boots which were still on and thought I was just seeing white cotton from my boots all over my floor and leg I didn't see any blood or anything so I thought it was good so I reached down from my gun and when I grabbed it I felt pain and looked at my foot and realized that what I thought was cotton was actually bone and I screamed oh my God it's bone holy s*** and blood just started gushing everywhere and he realized he hit me right about a couple seconds before I said that and he ran off and I basically collapsed not long after that and crawled out to the parking lot screaming 911-911 at the top of my lungs and this is all going on at like 11:30 or 12:00 at night
      Eventually someone comes outside into the parking lot at my apartments and puts a tourniquet on and calls 911 if they had not put in a tourniquet on and not actually brought out something to prop my leg up I will probably would have died from blood loss due to the fact that they hit all my major arteries and veins there was another person out there with him that I kept trying to yell at me and keep your leg up keep your leg up keep your leg up you got to keep your leg up here you're going to lose too much blood and that guy actually screamed at him shut the f****** and the guy got mad and was like what I'm trying to help them and I remember the guy saying no you're going to put them into shock by freaking him out shut the f*** up and that was one of the last things I remember before I remember getting put in the ambulance where they put a weird padded brace on my leg but not very tightly and they cut my pants off actually when I was on the ground because it was so soaked in Blood and they couldn't get them off and then they cut my shirt off because it was covered in blood and then took me to the hospital and they couldn't find a vein because I had lost so much blood and they couldn't get an ultrasound machine there in time to get me pain medication so they can start cleaning up the wound as fast as possible so they could put pressure on it and start taking care of it but they couldn't do that until then or at least they said they couldn't they couldn't find a vein I wasn't coherent enough to tell them where any good ones were and from what they could tell I didn't really have any most likely due to the blood loss they said and they couldn't find one with a vein finder but they couldn't get an ultrasound down there quick enough so they ended up just going along with the surgery the first one the cleaning and debridement while I was awake for almost about 75% of it and they're digging around with pliers and tweezers and all kinds of stuff obviously not pliers but I just remember for some reason the first thing I said or thought of when I was looking at it was pliers that's why I use the term but you know medical clamps and tweezers and tools and s*** digging around in my f****** ankle and all I could feel was them clicking against my bones and s*** and digging around in my f****** meat and it was one of the most traumatizing and painful things I've ever been through and it's just crazy you know people say like painful things are some of the worst pain you'll ever remember but I can sure say that I'll probably never experience pain like that again but I barely remember it because true horrific pain like truly you know horrific pain it puts you into such a traumatic state that you barely remember it so it's actually not as painful as you would think it's not as debilitating you think it puts you into survival mode and makes it not easier to deal with but it's almost an incomprehensible state of being nowadays I've been dealing with other conditions I now have Crohn's disease Parkinson disease and a number of other things including lung cancer and I can definitely tell you that I have a rare version of Crohn's Disease it's not like the normal one and makes me much more dried out down there than let's just say wet nasty and due to that the pain is much more excruciating and Crohn's disease is already one of the most painful conditions you can have and I also have fibromyalgia and scoliosis and arthritis due to the injuries so I deal with the extreme amount of pain on a daily basis but ideal on a daily basis most people would probably go to the hospital for but it's become so normal to me that you know I don't even take Tylenol for it anymore and I stopped taking painkillers but let's just say that if I were to compare my gunshot to the worst Crohn's pains I've ever felt I would say the Crohn's pain felt worse because of how debilitating it was but that was because my body was in fully usable and technically uninjured condition while when I was shot I the injured itself actually made me debilitated but due to that I was already in a unusable state for my body and not in full condition not in any good condition so the pain was almost secondary due to the traumatization of knowing that you most likely lost a limb or had some other severe injury I've also been stabbed multiple times while living in Philadelphia and working in a really really bad area called Kensington I was even shot in that area too but it was with a tiny 22 and I didn't even go to the hospital it barely stuck into my calf because of how spent the round was it went through someone's window and their car and by the time it hit me it just didn't have much left and I was actually just able to take it out I called my adoptive dad and like I said earlier he is a doctor and I showed him a picture of everything after I took the bullet out and he said no wash it out good make sure you put a bandage on it and wash it out two to three times a day I did so and it healed it very fine the stab wounds not so much the one that's actually the worst is the one where I didn't get stabbed technically I was cut the one of my gut I was stabbed and had to go to the hospital and get I think of his 14 or 16 stitches it was right in my gut about 4 to 5 in underneath my belly button right above my groin and I had another one in my arm about an inch and a half wide and down into the muscle and it actually was so bad that the recovery from it didn't go well and actually basically killed some of the muscle in the process of healing and left a massive scar not compared to my scars from my gunshot wound my foot looks insane I have a giant patch on it and then the skin and muscle they took out of my leg to put in my foot is even bigger it's about 18 inches long and it's widest point because of how it had to be stretched overtime when healing gets to almost 3 in wide so it's pretty crazy but the worst of the stabbing incidents was when the guy was going to stab me I grabbed his wrist when I had seen him coming at me unlike the others who did it out of nowhere or caught me off guard or a day where I wasn't carrying my gun I went to grab this guy's wrist cuz I have extensive self-defense knowledge and right when I went to grab his wrist he had just moved his hand backward and I ended up grabbing his fingers and he pulled the knife out from where I had his hand and the knife cut my ring finger really bad right in the top knuckle Ridge or whatever you want to call it where it bends and it was so bad that it didn't heal for like 6 months because it just really f***** everything up and now it's real sensitive and it almost feels like there's a bone poking out even though there's not but I can't even like drip weights now or anything really really hard without a glove on to make sure that there's no direct contact with anything heavy or rough so yeah I know my fair share of injuries and I can definitely tell you that the CorBon DPX bullet is a very debilitating and effective bullet for self-defense

    CorBon DPX are excellent rounds, my only complaint is the price. Sure, price shouldn't be a factor in self defense, but it's difficult for working stiffs to practice with 9mm cartridges that go for $1.30 a pop. 9BPLE is just as good, and far more economical, IMO.

      I agree, I'm just one of those people that prefers to run a box or two of my chosen SD round every 90 days or so, just to recognize the recoil, accuracy, and make sure my weapon cycles the round every time. To each their own, but I'm hoping the price of DPX eventually lowers some.

      Yes and no. Yes I've shot 'em and seen what they do, but no I haven't put up a video review of them yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to approach it, since it's so very different from conventional ammo. The results I got are fundamentally identical to tnoutdoors9's test, and I share his views on it, but I think there's more to test, especially against comparable types of ammo such as DRT or Extreme Shock. So, at some point I may do a comprehensive exotic ammo test, but it's not going to be any time soon...

    What really impresses me here is that the denim had no significant impact on performance. Not many hollowpoints can go through the denim without losing some of their expansion and penetrating extra (sometimes excessively) deep. The DPX really is a good bullet.

    • @ShootingTheBull410
      @ShootingTheBull410  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Golden Saber tests are coming. Testing has really slowed down in these hot summer months, the gel I use is highly temperature sensitive and 100-degree Texas says are really limiting how much testing I can get done in one trip, so... be patient and eventually I'll get those Golden Sabers (124 and 147gr) tested!

    • @BigDaddy1957One
      @BigDaddy1957One 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know I live in Texas too, it's been hot. I think the HST is the best, they are so consistent. I noticed they have what looks like a nipple in the middle. Maybe that aids in expansion when going through denim and not letting it get clogged causing it to act like a FMJ. After the HST it's Gold Dots and Golden Sabers.

      About an inch of the barrel in an automatic is taken up by the chamber so the actual length of the rifled barrel is really around 2 inches like your revolver, depending on how large the gap is between your cylinder and barrel it may do just as good

    I realize that terminal effect is the real thing being tested here, but I've always wondered about how barrel time can affect accuracy. In the 3" barrels, probably isn't any practical (or maybe even testable) difference, but could there be an accuracy difference if the lighter round achieves less barrel time?

    • @mytmousemalibu
      @mytmousemalibu 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of the 2 bullets of different weight fired from the same barrel, the time spent in the barrel isn't going to matter really. The barrel's rate of twist would likely make more difference in accuracy. Certain barrel lengths and twist rates will tend to favor a certain weight of bullet more than other weights. There are many, many other variables to consider though. With a little 3" barrel, a 95gr VS 115gr, probably not much if any difference in accuracy on paper at a practical distance. In a longer barrel, perhaps.

    • @nathanatramp
      @nathanatramp 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I forgot about twist rate. I guess those little pocket 9mms are designed for use with 115 to 147, but I'd suppose that they'd do better with the lighter bullets, given the shorter barrel, no? Maybe that's why the 95s still worked OK.

    What about tissue damage via cavitation of the faster 95g Vs. Diameter of the slower 115g? Which is more important to you? Which causes faster blood loss?

    • @ShootingTheBull410
      @ShootingTheBull410  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, handgun bullets aren't really capable of causing damage via temporary cavitation. Damage via temporary stretch is usually the province of rifles, and doesn't generally happen with handguns. You generally need around 2,000 fps velocity or faster before the temporary cavity begins to exceed the elastic limit of most human tissue. In general, the temporary stretch cavity stretches out, then contracts back to normal size, with either no damage done due to stretching, or minimal bruising happening. There are a few organs in the body that may or will be damaged by the temporary stretch -- some of the tissue is inflexible (such as the liver) and the temporary stretch would damage it. But in general, the temporary cavity isn't really a factor in handgun bullets. In rifles the temporary stretch cavity becomes so large that it becomes a potentially major wounding factor, especially when combined with fragmentation, but that's really something that generally only happens with rifles, and that's one reason why rifles are so much more effective manstoppers than handguns are.

    Sir, I did not know they made the DPX in the 95 grain. The round I originaly wrote you that I have is the 90 Grain not a 95. This was a great video, and I will buy some of these. I was shocked at the price. The 90 grain is a standard JHP rated at 1600 FPS from a four inch barrel. This is even faster than the DPX you tested. I see you have a video on the corbon web site. I will be calling corbon, and paying for them to send you the 90 grain for testing . This should be easy since they have all your info and will not invade your privacy. Let me know when you read this, and if this is okay I will have them send you a box and add the price to my order.

    • @ShootingTheBull410
      @ShootingTheBull410  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many people requested the 95gr DPX. I didn't even think about the 90gr JHP. The specs on the website that I see are that it's rated at 1500 fps out of a 4" barrel. That's pretty fast...
      I'm really backlogged on test ammo right now, I've got many many brands here I have to get through. Once I get caught up, I could ask CorBon if they'd want to supply some of that 90gr JHP; that way it wouldn't cost you anything. Thanks for the offer though!

    I recently purchased a SIG P380. Does bullet come in .380?

      Yes, CorBon does make a version of DPX in .380. However, it does not perform quite as well in .380 as it does in 9mm. You can see my test of CorBon DPX .380 here: Ammo Quest .380: CorBon DPX 80gr ammo test thru ballistics gel & denim

    For a 9mm, I want penetration first and expansion. To me, they fail.

    "not 9mm hunting ammo" hahaha. Pray tell, what could you hunt with 9x19mm?

      Varmint at close range.

      ***** Maybe, but that doesn't mean you can hunt with it.

      I have dropped 3 whitetail deer with a 9mm. Now I'll give you that was out of a PCC with a 16" barrel using Federal +P+ 115g JHP 9BPLE rounds, but the deer dropped where they stood. The furthest shot was around 90 yards, the closest around 50 yards.

    Thanks for the video. Well done and informative as usual.
    The FBI needs to update their specifications to keep up with the times. Instead of using denim, just drape a hoodie over the gel block.
