I like the “extended” branding options, like go with The Utah Sting/Stingers, with the arena “The Hive”, and the fan base “The Swarm”. Triple A baseball Salt Lake was once named Gulls. Not a one of these names makes me jump out of my chair. The more I think about it I think Golden Eagles is a name that rises above all these others, and that does not mean in honor of the old SL Golden Eagles, its just a cool name. 2 other names I think need considering is the Utah Lions referring to our Mt. Lion population and the Mustangs for our large herds of wild horse Mustangs roaming the west deserts.
Two new names to add to the list. Since BYU has cougars, some may not like the reference to mountain lions. You're the second on this video to mention mustangs. It's a great team nickname.
Utah No-Name is not what I expected for an NHL Hockey team starting its first year in Salt Lake City! I wonder what the logo will be for the "No-Names!" My point here is...to push for a real logo and brand for our team NOW!
Why only Utah is an option in name. I think salt lake has many good sounding variations. Salt lake Serpents Salt lake Eagles Salt lake Cityeagles (Pigeons 😅) Salt Lake City Canyoneers Salt lake city Utes Utes of Utah The 96ers of Utah. Was 45th state in 1896.
Vegas is a much newer team, not a loyal fan base in Utah. Colorado Avalanche has a much bigger, longer lasting fan base in Utah. I for one won't be jumping ship for a Utah team that may not even last. And am concerned about the Grizzlies. They have a great following but will the richer people abandon them for NHL 🤷 And if the Grizzlies go away, many of us will be priced out of hockey in Utah. Also not a fan of tax payer funded arena.
Thanks for this take. I can see it being hard to switch allegiances. And you're right, Utah is growing, but it would be interesting to see if it can support both teams. As for the arena funding, that is a great topic we should've touched upon. I'm also not a big fan of it. Perhaps we'll discuss that in a future video.
You can be ordinary and pick a name from a pool of usual suspects. OR you can branch out into something more extraordinary and get an American Indian name that works from the American Indian languages in the area. Words like FIRST, BEST, FOREMOST, etc. Seattle, for instance, got cracking and got Kraken. Maybe not exactly indigenous but more OFF THE BEATEN PATH.
Hopefully they'll do something more inventive, but I can see them touching anything with Native Americans to avoid even the slightest hint of something offensive.
Not a fan of Yetis ... Too much like the Kraken and I never liked that. Much of Utah doesn't experience blizzards, not a good choice. Of the patent requests this far, I guess I'd vote for Outlaws, but only as the least worst. But having no name is ridiculous
Makes this ownership look a little flakey. From a buisnes perspective it's an absolute nightmare. Look at the millions these people are losing from Sports memorabilia. They should be selling all this stuff while everyone is in frenzy about the new team.
Or…. Hot take… you get people to buy UTAH HC merch the first year (which could become their eventual throwback), and then the real team merch either in year 2, or mid-season. MAYBE it’s really a financial mastermind move.
What if they went with the Golden Eagle nod, but call them the Talons? Have it look like an eagle flyiny, head-on towards the viewer, claws forward, like it just landed, but it’s grabbing a hockey stick instead of a branch.
Another factoid: The Sting was the first pro soccer team in Utah. They were great with our youth.
