i have ran normal wheels and bead lock wheels. i honestly have never popped a bead running 10 psi on my jeep with a normal wheel. the tire shops are less butt hurt around here when you need something, and I carry the means to re-seat the tires in the field if I ever de-beaded a tire. when i had bead locks on my JK, they were a massive PITA to balance, and are so heavy it affected the braking of the jeep.
Correct - it’s a wheel, I worked for a gentleman who owned an aftermarket off-road parts manufacturing company , if you called it a rim you’d get a pop upside the noggin.
Only bead locks for me. A couple friends have the Hutchinson rims and hate them. Plenty of regular bead locks to choose from. Regular wheels are fine for your mall crawlers and lite off road. Enjoy whatever fits you.
Nice video...the weight difference is also noticeably different. I switched from kmc machete crawl beadlocks to Black Rhino nonbeadlocks and saved 20lbs per wheel...was noticeable when braking and accelerating.
I have 'fake' beadlocks on mine - thought they were dumb when I bought the jeep with them but the way they are set up are that the fake ring functions as a rock ring (so my valve stem is incredibly well protected). I air down to 12-15 psi in my milestar pats and I've never heard of anyone popping a bead with my use case (light-med rock crawling and general trail riding) so I don't really have use for stepping up to beadlocks. However some of my friends are doing med-hard trails and they definitely need them for that because I've seen plenty of popped beads, especially with certain brands
You forgot to mention most bead lock wheels are not DOT approved. And that little fact can get expensive if you get stopped. Hutchinson Rock Monsters are one of the only bead locks that are. Plus bead lock wheels are heavy which is something you have to consider. Method seems to me to be on the right track for a all-around street legal wheel that's great for off roading. With there trail series wheels.....You might want to check them out.....I've been impressed by mine. and no Method didn't pay me I was just looking for lighter alternatives to bead locks....
Enjoyed the explanation on beadlocks. I sometimes wonder if I should’ve gone for beadlocks but I went with the Teraflex nomad wheels. If I did go with beadlocks I think I would’ve gone for spiderlock but I would probably do some more research. Again thank you for another awesome video!
They were most likely mounted like that because some beadlock wheels come with a "D.O.T. street legal option". Its probably a liability for them to mount the tire using the beadlock.
The most bad ass motorized vehicle i drove was a Honda Insight, but just before he told about the inner bead lock i was like "and the inner bead??".. not too shabby
Two weeks ago i knew nothing about bead lock wheels but Matt's Off Road Recovery fitted a weld in bead lock kit to his XJ Cherokee & now my suggested video feed is flooded with related content.
beadlock prevent the tyre to go out from the rim when you are turning rigth or left all the weigth of the vehicule is on the outer side of the vehicule, so we dispose beadlock only this side. There is no chance the wheel will go out of his rim from the inner. If u dont have beadlock and run deflated tyre we advise to always drive slow especially in virage to avoid the tyre going off..
So anytime one needs a new tire , that has a beadlock over the rim, the beadlock has to be removed first ? Also can beadlocks be wrapped a different color, if so would it compromise the it's function ?
Some are some aren’t. But I have never seen a law against beadlocks in the states A LEO could cite you for unsafe vehicle condition which is a catch all but that is a non-moving violation ... basically pay the fine and move on I personally have not had an issue with my trail readys and I daily them.... with LEOs pulling up next to me at street lights
I have a duramax diesel and i thought about putting beadlocks on mine. I'm all for show. Im assuming since humvees use beadlocks my diesel is the same way. Is it good? I just want the coolness factor and I'm doing a full build. Im new to off-roading but I'm a Master Mechanic and Aerospace Mechanic by trade. Money is no object. I don't wanna half crap ebay build like most and I'm only seeking the best quality. What's y'alls advice? Humvees have the same lug pattern and i have seen Humvees tow heavy loads using these types of wheel.
Talks about a company that mounted a beadlock incorrectly, but shows a video of a Hutchinson wheel being taken apart that had been installed correctly!
I'm still not getting it why beadlocks are only on the outside. Does not the inside have the same issues as the outside ? Or is it because folks are running the outside sidewall against rocks and such more than the inside.
There is more force on the outer bead when turning. The wheel on the inside is usually just following, not doing nearly as much of the work of forcing the vehicle to turn like the outer one is. Hopefully this helps you understand. That's not to say you can't loose an inner bead, but it is extremely rare.
@@jdofmemi thank you. Now it makes more sense. I of course as a dirt bike rider had issues with the tires spinning on the rims. So our version of bead lock was to install screws through the rim into the tire bead. A bit differant !
Man it's gotta suck for you jeep guys to have to get beadlocks added to your rigs. Real offroad rigs come with *dual* beadlock wheels from the factory :P
@@Exodus4x4 Man you Jeep guys get touchy real quick. :) I guess my sarcasm "raspberry emoji" didn't get picked up :P It's ok. BTW, HMMWV != H1 but oh well. Thank you for your service!
Really great content, thanks for making this, good explanations. but can you please publish as an actual video. TH-cam 'shorts' lacks all the features of fast-forwarding and rewinding, screen size also sucks.
Excellent breakdown. I had so many questions. They have all been answered.
i have ran normal wheels and bead lock wheels. i honestly have never popped a bead running 10 psi on my jeep with a normal wheel. the tire shops are less butt hurt around here when you need something, and I carry the means to re-seat the tires in the field if I ever de-beaded a tire. when i had bead locks on my JK, they were a massive PITA to balance, and are so heavy it affected the braking of the jeep.
They are heavy. You are right
You are correct sir, its a "wheel". A rim is a part of the wheel that keeps the rubber from sliding off the edge of the wheel so it can hold air.
Correct - it’s a wheel, I worked for a gentleman who owned an aftermarket off-road parts manufacturing company , if you called it a rim you’d get a pop upside the noggin.

The proper name for them are cylinders of expeditious rotation.
Lol
Nice video...the weight difference is also noticeably different. I switched from kmc machete crawl beadlocks to Black Rhino nonbeadlocks and saved 20lbs per wheel...was noticeable when braking and accelerating.
Yeah definitely. Every pound matters on the corners
I heard a guy had black rhino brass beadlocks. Is that bad for the wheel
I have Hutchinson Beadlock 3pc wheels on my TJ. Air down to 6lbs for sand without any issues.
Just about the only legal beadlock to use on roads.
I have 'fake' beadlocks on mine - thought they were dumb when I bought the jeep with them but the way they are set up are that the fake ring functions as a rock ring (so my valve stem is incredibly well protected). If your a diesel i wouldn't worry about weight. Lol
Props for using the ultra tef-gel. Super important.
Where can I buy those chrome wheels
Yea
They aren't chrome; they're machine finished. They could be KMC machete and grenades. Both are beadlocks with slightly different styling.
Good explanation of a beadlock. Thanks.
Method Beadgrip is the way to go!

Curious, why spider locks?
@@JWard2 no particular reason. I have read some reviews that they were some good beadlocks but haven’t seen them up close.
Thanks for this. Excellent info
I'll stick to running my poor boys beadlocks.......aka." factory 7.5 inch wide rims with wide tires mounted" works good for me. 315 70r 17's
They do make a beadlock wheel that can be mounted the both ways.
They were most likely mounted like that because some beadlock wheels come with a "D.O.T. street legal option". Its probably a liability for them to mount the tire using the beadlock.
Dual bead locks? Outer and inner what would be a good brand for that?
Every off-road rig should have bead locks, mine all do.
And a gear vendor reduction case and supercharger mine all do
The most bad ass motorized vehicle i drove was a Honda Insight, but just before he told about the inner bead lock i was like "and the inner bead??".. not too shabby
Keep your ride light. 2dr JL on methods 24lb. Duratracs. 315/70r17 60lbs.
84lb 35” can drive at 10psi all day
What wheel brand carries that silver hybrid beadlock wheel?
Very helpful. Thank you

Very informative and helpful, thank you.
Nice Video. After watching a number of vids, yours was the most comprehensive and thorough. Thanks! Wish I still had my FJ 🥲
Always informative.
Great information thanks!!!
This is a dumb question. What keeps the inside bead from coming off at low tire pressures? Seems like you should lock both beads.
I have the same question. I think double beadlocks exist for that.
beadlock prevent the tyre to go out from the rim when you are turning rigth or left all the weigth of the vehicule is on the outer side of the vehicule, so we dispose beadlock only this side. There is no chance the wheel will go out of his rim from the inner.

So if these were to be mounted on a ford e350 weighing more than 11k lbs, would bead lockers be better fit?
So anytime one needs a new tire , that has a beadlock over the rim, the beadlock has to be removed first ? Also can beadlocks be wrapped a different color, if so would it compromise the it's function ?
Lol,the wheel is the whole thing the tire is mounted to but the rim is the part of the wheel that you see from the side view.
Whats the rims on your right 15seconds is? Thats very nice
In what part of this video do you compare the pros or cons?
are beadlocks DOT approved and are they allowed to be driven on the road or are they just for off-road vehicles only?

I missed it in the video, why do they say they are for off road use only? What's down side of running them on road?
Safety. Someone got hurt once and now we have to bubble wrap the world.
My only issue, is I need to buy a damn air compressor 🤦♂️

Hutchinson Rock Monsters
A tire is a tire and a rim is a wheel. 👍🏾
Why do you have a beadlock ring on only the outer part the rim? Seems like a 50% solution to me, (if you even need them.)
What's your honest opinion on factory truck beadlock wheels? Such as the ones on the Power Wagon.
Great video! Still debating on which to go with for my future build. Also, what lift did that red Gladiator have in the video? Love the stance. Thanks
I believe that’s a 4.5” lift

What vehicle?
@@Exodus4x4 05 TJ
I’d think it would be just fine.
But why a bead lock on one side of the wheel, but not the other?
Long term I want to eventually run headlocks. With them being heavier and issues balancing wheels for highway driving?
you have to remember most bead locks aren't DOT approved. Hutchinson are.
Not really, you just have to find someone that can balance them correctly
What would you recommend for a tire that I can drive on road and but have fun in the sand snow or mud on the weekends in the 35s range?
Nitto Ridge Grapplers
Awesome
Weight of the vehicle??? Airing down,.... Good Topic this would be a very good topic for someone experienced to discuss.
Wut?
But, if you bought it out of impulse, would it not be called a whim?
😂
Remounting an Undamaged tyre , that has simply been knocked off the Bead just needs " Aerostart and a Zippo " . Whoompff .
Nice!!!!!
What backspacing do you prefer on a JL with a 3-1/2” lift?
Minimum of 4.5”

It is a wheel. A rim is NSFW.
Lol, but it’s still a dumb argument
Oh by far. But then what would we waste our time on between part installs or shopping for parts. Psshhhh
It’s a wheel, not a rim. The rim is the area of the wheel the bead seats against.
It’s a dumb argument either way.
it is really necesary to airdown more than 15 psi? on 35
Nah
Depends on the diameter of the wheel and what you are doing
