  • Fortunately with tropical pitcher plants about three quarters of them have almost identical care requirements that helps keep these guys thriving. Nepenthes alata alone has several different colors and looks to just this one plant alone. Be sure to watch the entire video to learn the care that this broad genus takes to keep your plant both happy and healthy for years to come. Don't forget to always Plant Prudently!

    That was a great video. I bought one of these plants because we live in Texas, and it seems to me that every time we open a door, a few flies come in. I'm hoping this plant can help me out. I hope you’ve had better luck! Nepenthes that aren’t creating pitchers are generally lacking adequate light and humidity. Mist your plant often and put her in a spot with better light. My brother showed me that as until now he was the one with Nepenthes.

  • @Thunderwolf1989

    I got a small alata over a year ago (to see if I could keep these guys alive), and this year got myself a sanguinea companion. My alata spent the spring till autumn outside (though I got it too much light once, so a lot of the pitchers dried up and some leaves got burned. It's still growing from the top and a new side branch is growing the tiniest pitchers I've ever seen.
    The sanguinea I've kept inside and is doing well, so I'm learning. I find these carnivorous plants to be quite easy and forgiving as long as their basic requirements (humidity and temperature) is taken care of. I only water them once or twice a week with some rainwater I collected in a spray bottle. I don't give them any extra light (my grow lights I use for my (sub)tropical trees like starfruit and cherimoya) and the light they get from ~2 meters away from the window in the living room seems enough to keep them alive and growing (slowly) during wintertime.
    A small addition I think worth mentioning is that the pitchers shouldn't be filled up with water too much or too often, as the enzymes the pitcher plant uses to eat the insect will get diluted and will make the pitcher rot.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sanguinea is one that I plan on buying next. Then I want to get a lowii. Yes as long as they get ample humidity, and bright shade I think they're good to go. Yes I agree about the water though it is also very important to make sure they don't dry out either. Often times our homes are kept hot and bone dry around this time of year, if you're in the northern hemisphere like I am. Sounds like you know how to keep them taken care of!

I have mine hanging outside on my porch in a shady spot that gets shade most of day but gets some sunlight towards end of day 4-7pm. It seems to be doing well, but the only thing I’m concerned about is possibly getting fungus mites as you mentioned.

    Again, so grateful for your help! I just started with Carnivorous plants. My first was a jug shaped ground guy, Sarracenia Purpurea. He likes to sit in a tray of water constantly. It sounds like the moisture in the pictures are not made by the plant but by catching moisture in there? I didn’t realize, very helpful! I just ordered one of the hanging ones and was wondering how I could hang it while still keeping it in that bog type super moisture. Sounds like just a lot of distilled watering and misting. Luckily, I have the humidity.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so it is possible to over water some of these guys. Most of the American ones are more bog type plants but a majority of the tropicals don't need as much water. I mean with mine, I give them both about 3-4 cups of water every 3 or so days. Now, as the heat index goes up the water intake levels need to increase too. Be careful giving the pitchers too much water. If you give them too much you can throw them off with their digestive fluids. What I do with mine is hang them up in a tree or on the porch, some place that they'll get ample morning light and then protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Typically when they are outside they will get the right amount of humidity as long as you supply them with a steady supply of water.

      Thank you! I really do like making these videos. I've got mine under my grow lights (LEDs) in the winter. In the summer it's smart to place them somewhere that gets ample early morning light and is then protected from the sunlight during the hottest part of the day. On a porch (is where I have mine during the growing season) or up in a tree are good ideas. Yes you should spray the plant with rain water (depending on where you live) or used distilled water bc some additives in tap and filtered water can harm your plant and pitchers. Though you don't want to spray the pitchers too often because you run the risk of diluting the solution in the pitchers which can mess with their ability to digest food.

    I don’t know what I have! Sometimes I think it’s an alata, sometimes I think it’s a ventrata... I live in Florida, my plant is in a screen in porch hanging. It had several pitchers when I got it a month and a half ago, they were kinda two-toned green and a coral color. The pitchers dried up, I cut them off and suddenly a bunch of new little green pitchers formed. And there are a TON of what look like baby pitchers, but they’re brown? They look dried up? Are they supposed to look like that? I spray my plant every day with distilled water, and water it with distilled about once a week, but now I’m doing twice a week. Also, if you cut a dried pitcher off, and the leaf still looks good, can that leaf regrow a picher? Sorry thanks I’m desperate for answers

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the pitchers start drying up this is the plant telling you it's not getting enough water and/or humidity. Here in Kentucky during the summer I water mine no less than two or three times a week. It's not uncommon for me to water them more than once a day when it gets really hot out. I'm sure with the Florida heat down there yours dries out fairly quickly. The one thing you do have going for you down there is the humidity lol. I have family outside of Pensacola and I know it gets rather humid down there. Pitcher plants enjoy humidty around 60% so along with avid waterings you need to spray it down some too. With pitcher plants the leaves only produce one pitcher. Eventually it will turn old and dry up. The only way for there to be new pitchers is for the plant to develop new leaves or vines. If you want me to see if I can tell what it is send me some pics on insta ytgreenalchemist.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So carnivorous plants like those two have sugary nectar and usually attract insects that like sugar, like flies, moths and butterflies etc. Don't get me wrong an occasional misguided white fly may get eaten but it probably won't put a dent in the population. The venus flytrap will eat any insect that crawls. Instead try a Pinguicula. They are my absolute favorite! If they do become a serious problem blast them off your plants with a stream of water from your garden house. Then you can apply some insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep them at bay. The butterworts should help too.

  • @Yan.Valley
    @Yan.Valley 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My cousin works at a plant shop and she gave me one of these because I have a Venus flytrap but all of the pitchers are brown at the top and I was wondering if this is because it went dormant for the winter and what should I do. Should I trim off the dead parts or cut off the whole pitcher?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind do you have? The tropical pitchers don't go dormant, life basically goes on as normal for them during the winter. The American ones do though. Typically the pitchers start to turn brown and look crispy because they aren't getting the right amount of water. They enjoy moderate amounts of light and higher humidity. I use a humidifier and water it about every 3 to 4 days until the excess water drains out the bottom. Make sure your pitchers have a little bit of water inside of them too. Be careful though because the pitchers are sensitive and can be dried out by the salts in softened water and also succumb to the sediments in hard water. I use distilled water and only fill up the pitcher up a quarter of the way.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yes trim off the dead part of the pitcher. You can trim off the top dead part and place a little bit of distilled water in it still.

    • @Yan.Valley
      @Yan.Valley 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      She didn’t tell me what kind it is but it looks similar to the one in this video. All the pitchers are dead and shriveled at the top half and the bottom is still alive, they are a mix of green and purple color. When I got it yesterday they were all dried out and empty. Btw I live in Utah and it’s starting to get a little warmer if that helps with anything.

    I obtained mine from a colorado nursery that honestly didn't provide the best humidity levels. I can tell because 1) colorado is dry as a desert bone and 2) the tops of a good number of developed pitchers have browned completely into dead tissue. It still grows and produces healthy pitchers under my care but I'm curious if it is advisable to prune away the half-dead pitchers?

      I personally dont have this plant yet, but a buddy of mine does. They are great plants to have but can be a little tricky at times. They enjoy a good amount of brighter indirect light indoors, full to partial sunlight outdoors. They are typically at home in a sunroom or a green house. They just like almost every other ones enjoy their humidity. He also says they can be sensitive with their water so he uses distilled. He also grows them in spagnum moss.

    • @kathyryder828
      @kathyryder828 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sundews tend to grow in boggy areas in nature. They need a very moist growing medium. Nepenthes don't like wet roots. I grow my Nepenthes in sphagnum moss and keep the sphagnum damp but not wet/ overly moist. I haven't tried growing the two types of plants together. However, I suspect the moisture level required for sundews to thrive would be too wet for Nepenthes.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No do not water every day, they can succumb to root rot too. In the peak of the growing season you could water every day but too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. They enjoy humidifiers too. That could help instead of watering every day. I just cut the pitchers off at the end of the leaf. Once dead they won't grow another one. Make sure you sanitize your pruning shears too before use. I like to place mine in an eastern facing window so that they will get ample morning light and then protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Bathrooms work well too if you have a window in yours. Let me know if you have anymore questions! Plant Prudently!

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically leaves turning red indicate the plant is getting too much light, sunburn. This doesn't seem too likely right now assuming you are in the northern hemisphere like I am. A black spot can indicate fungi/bacteria problems. Has anything changed in the past couple of months, watering habits, humidity levels, fertilizing, light levels? Have you looked your plant over lately? Under every leaf, pitcher, and stem? Do you see anything? Do you ever give your plant a shower? This will help humidity levels and keep pests from setting up shop and beginning to infest your big boy. Can you send me some pictures of your plant so I can look him over? ytgreenalchemist@gmail.com

    What are you using epsom salts for? And how do you apply it?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  ปีที่แล้ว

      So plants that typically benefit from adding Epsom salts are plants that have a magnesium deficiency. If not you may end up hurting your other wise healthy plants. Plants like evergreen or even flowering shrubs typically enjoy Epsom salts in with their water. Usually I do one table spoon of Epsom salt to a gallon of water. Rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries, hydrangeas, hostas, roses, tomatoes, and peppers enjoy it. I also use some on my citrus, apple, peaches and plum trees too!

      There are a ton out there that range from lowland or sea level all the way up to highlands of 5,000 feet. Some that thrive at sea level are Nepenthes reinwardtiana, N. ampullaria, N. eustachya, N. veitchii, N. mirabilis, N. smilesii, N.papuana, and N. rafflesiana. Now I probably misspelled one or two of those but check out carnivorousplants.co.uk they have a chart that shows the altitude that every known nepenthes is found at. • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Don't fear though, this happens in nature and your plants know how to correct it. I would just cut off any damaged pitchers (with sanitized pruning shears) because they'll probably die, and until they do they will continue to siphon off valuable nutrients that the rest of the plant could use. Keep him well watered and your plant will make more.

    I have had my plant for about 2 years now. I live in Eastern KS. The first year it did very well on the north side of the house - grew new pitchers . It did well in the house over winter very close to a humidifier. This summer every pitcher that starts to form dries up and dies before it develops. I notice down below - a new baby plant is there with new healthy pitchers. I keep the soil very moist. What is happening here? I am thinking maybe not enough humidity outside for the larger leaves to develop pitchers?

    • @Ryan-yx9kz
      @Ryan-yx9kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nepenthes tend to need two things to pitcher properly that is light and humidity. From what I’ve experienced if there is too little light the plant won’t even try to grow pitchers. If there is too little humidity the plant will try but they often end up deformed or die. You seem to have a problem with humidity so misting the tendrils should help the pitchers develop and misting adult pitchers tends to make them last longer. Avoid misting the whole plant since that may cause crown rot.

  • @nancyswan9547

    how do I know when to repot?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pitcher plants typically have small, shallow roots so they really don't get root bound unless they are in a small pot. The way I can tell it's time to repot is when the substrate compacts, breaks down or just generally looks nasty or not healthy. All of this just encourages unhealthy bacterial growth, not enough aeration around the roots, or just holds on to too much moisture which all can stunt the plant and its roots and just end up killing your plant if not caught early enough. In fact not producing pitchers is a sign of not getting enough light but can also be because the substrate is beyond its prime.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Give it some time. As long as you keep the substrate fairly moist you'll be fine. You basically want it to have the same consistency as a wrung out sponge. With light they need filtered indirect light. I have my larger one hanging in an eastern facing window right next to some LED full spectrum lights. My smaller one is in a south facing window but he's scooted back about two feet. Make sure he gets some humidity too. If you water correctly you won't need to depend on humidity as much. Don't feed aside from the occasional dead cricket/fly. As long as you keep them consistently moist the pitchers will grow and stay hydrated.
