Hotstart TBM 900 Part 1 - IFR Departure from Glasgow [X-Plane]

  • Part one of the video series looking at the Hotstart TBM 900 in X-Plane 11. We set the aircraft up from cold and dark, load an IFR flightplan from Glasgow EGPF to Aberdeen EGPD then start the engine using a ground power unit. Flying the departure we look at the importance of always understanding what the GPS navigation is trying to do.
    Errors, Omissions, Clarifications:-
    I had a slight overtorque during the initial climb, remember that the power lever is very sensitive and concentrate on flying at all times.
    You can accelerate and deselect inertial separator much sooner than video shows, the delay was to allow explanation of the turn/flightplan issues.

    Has more enjoyment flying this than any other aircraft. I purchased one in Fseconomy and flew it halfway around the world from north Africa to mid USA. Loving every second and how incredible the attention to detail is

      Thanks Steve, sorry for the delay replying - summer has been very busy! Yes I chose to do the TBM series in Scotland because flying IFR in the UK can initially seem quite different from the US system that most people are familiar with. Glad you enjoyed the videos.

    By far the best tbm900 tutorial video on youtube. I am a private pilot with single engine land and sea rating. No instrument rating. Learning to fly with the g1000 is tricky becasue I feel like it is piecemeald with different tutorials, that was until I found your. Extremely slow, thorough, and easy to understand. Makes learning very easy. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Sorry it's under such shitty circumstances. Cheers

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, where do you fly? I was lucky to have about 250 hours on round instruments before going over to the G1000, I did about 130 hours on the G1000 and then went back to a. GNS430 and round instruments for my Instrument Rating. The real G1000 was fine for VFR, but the flightplan was not so easy for IFR, fine for “direct”, not so easy following an airways routing. The addition of a control keypad for it is a big improvement and the GTC 570 touch controller on the new G3000 looks to be even better.

      @@ReflectedRealitySimulations I am born and raised in Minnesota, USA, I got my PPL at a local regl airport (KRGK.) I then joined the US Navy went on to fly in a club in Pensacola, FL. I learned to fly variable pitch and retractable gear, although I never got checked out in it. I had a friend that owned a Mooney. So I got about 60hrs flying that. I kick myself for not getting those endorsements. I then got stationed in Oklahoma, OKC, and went back to flying the 172. I have a total of 250hrs logged flying time. After that I moved back home and havent been flying since 2012. Mostly becasue of work and family. So now I fly xplane when I have time. Trying to teach myself how to use the g1000 for arrivals and departures has proven to be tricky. Do you fly for a living? Are you currently flying the TBM900?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really enjoyed my time in the 172, my wife enjoyed it more than the PA28 as the view was a lot better. I’ve been flying for just under 20 years now. Initially as a Glider Pilot and PPL before making the career change and going to the airlines. I fly the A320 Series, though haven’t flown for over three weeks due to the Coronavirus situation. X-Plane is good for scratching that flying itch. Haven’t flown a TBM though - slightly out of my price range!

    • @VikingsFan27
      @VikingsFan27 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got the charts figured out.
      When do you think you will have part 2 of the video posted? I am currently at FL 150 35NM to ASNUD. I am positive that I need that other video to get this baby where it's supposed to be.

  • @thegood9
    @thegood9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Apparently you do need an autorouter.aero account in order to access european charts, so they do not show up automatically in the TBM.
    The BEST tutorial series you have done thus far, at least that I have reviewed, and that is saying a lot. I really appreciate the detailed instructions and the step-by-step procedures. Thank you once again.

      Yes you'll need a free autorouter account for the charts on the MFD. You can also use Navigraph via AviTab on the yoke.

On that note, I wonder if you might consider making a supplemental video on the additional G1000 simulations with the weather and traffic settings. This is so smooth. We are a number of online couch pilots who can take a plane from A to B, but watching a real pilot do it makes me realize how off I am. I am always overwhelmed, behind and chasing everything. Also I am not sure what I do wrong with the tbm, , but when I go into taxi range my taxi speed just keeps rising and I keep on having to use the brakes and before I get to takeoff I always get the warning that my brakes are too hot and to cool them. Also a new thing I am getting is the prop rpm keeps going above 2000 and torque goes up and down all by itself even though I don't have AP on... Frustrating. I hope to figure it out because if I can ever get close to flying planes like you do I will be happy and consider getting my ppl soon. Thanks!

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Vasily. You’ve identified the issues most sim pilots have at some point - staying “ahead” of the aircraft, and being able to plan ahead rather than react to stuff that happens. The TBM is a great aircraft to learn that skill with, because you can fly it slowly and make more time to think. You can come all the way back nearly to the reverse range when taxying around, which will help with the brake temperatures. Good luck with your PPL!

    Great video series! I only have 2 major criticisms for the TBM. For all the detail they have added... They still don't have a custom G1000 (something as simple as the essential v-speed bugs are missing). And too many people complain about the propeller torque that they removed it entirely. That green mark on rudder trim is there for a reason.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the nice comment. I agree to an extent about the Laminar G1000, but to be honest the V Speed bugs are not a big deal for me. I can’t remember ever using them on a G1000 before, and the AoA/Alpha gauge is much more useful for me. The flightplan is a bigger thing for me. I remember there being quite a bit of torque on the initial release, but again the problem is one of feel. In a real aircraft you can feel out of balance flight through your body as it feels like you are leaning to the side. That means the yaw control is almost an automatic response from your body, much harder to replicate in the sim so having it tuned down a bit is better for most sim pilots. The DCS Huey apparently has perfect control response, I bought it on launch day - but I found it almost unflyable with my cheap joystick and rudder pedals. It may feel like a Huey, but I just can’t enjoy it. Hope that makes sense?

    Awesome video! Thank you for your clear explanations. One thing I wanted to know more about is why you pressed the TO/GA button before even moving the aircraft? Was that just to get the flight director setup so you knew approximately at what angle and direction to fly on takeoff?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the nice comment William and sorry for the delay replying. Yes the flight directors in TOGA mode will give the correct pitch attitude for normal takeoffs, and also means all you need to do is point the aircraft at the flight director, trim, and put the autopilot on. I do it early as that's more what big aircraft do, but you could do it before lining up too.

    Hi Graeme, during your departure you do a right turn after XETUN but it doesn’t fly towards the the waypoint D299E, it flies a track towards ELBAN and you then have to manually set it to go direct to ELBAN to bypass the waypoint. Why doesn’t the aircraft fly towards the waypoint first?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a problem with the X-Plane default navigation code. The procedure calls for course 046 towards ELBAN and you can see this on the HSI. The aircraft attempts to do this by simply flying a 30 degree intercept which is quite lazy coding from Laminar Research. Because the D299E waypoint is also there for a crossing altitude restriction the aircraft would effectively miss that waypoint and the flight plan would fail to sequence. So I manually resequence the flight plan to ELBAN to fix that. You can see when I activate the leg the course on the HSI doesn’t change yet the magenta line on the map does move - another indication of the Laminar Research navigation code. You will see this behaviour in any LR G1000 fitted aircraft. Whenever you have issues like this, the HSI course is the first thing to look at, X-Plane will simply try and intercept at 30 degrees, that’s why I always recommend having the second bearing pointer set to GPS so you can quickly see if the 30 degree intercept will work.

    Hello Graeme,
    Concerning the activate approach vs vectors to final with a RNP APCH, I know the avionics on the TBM differs from bigger airlines and in some cases is more modern. Is the activate approach and vectors to final the same for all FMS's or does each manufacturer have their own way of doing things?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. That way of working is quite specific to Garmin. On the Airbus the approach phase is more related to performance - it basically tells the aircraft to fly as slow as the config allows instead of climb/cruise speeds. It will activate automatically but is mostly activated manually. The Garmin will not fly the approach phase waypoints without pilot intervention, either direct to or activate approach - on the Airbus and Boeing the approach follows on from the enroute and arrival, all the waypoints are in the correct order all the time, if you don't want to start the approach then a hold is inserted at the correct point. It's really quite easy and I don't really understand why Garmin did it differently! It's almost like there is a bias towards visual (i.e. it's saying "OK, you've got this approach, but do you really need it?") which is understandable given the origins of the G1000, and for a light GA aircraft visual is obviously preferred as instrument approaches often take lots more miles. In the Airbus when on vectors we usually "extend the centreline" by doing a direct-to the final approach fix, with a radial in - this ensures the waypoints will sequence correctly during the approach and is similar to the Garmin "Vectors to Final". Hope that all makes sense!

The TBM 930 looks really good, however, there are so many videos being posted by individuals who have no clue about the aircraft systems and procedures. I think that just as you put a superb series together for the TBM900 in XPlane, you should put one together for the TBM930 in FS 2020 and allow everyone to see how it should be done in your professional manner. You will see what I mean if you search in TH-cam for Microsoft Flight sim 2020 TBM 930. So many videos but little understanding of the aircraft.

So I start with EGPF, PTH and EGPD on the flightplan, but need to highlight EGPD (the next point after PTH) in order to load an airway from PTH. You’re basically inserting the airway after the waypoint, not on top of it. Hope that makes sense?

      I wouldn’t worry too much about the tables - they are really what performance engineers use to construct a digital model of the aircraft performance. For the climb the procedures section contains this bit about climb power this is what I do too - “For a simplified engine operation during climb, power may be set first of all by torque, using 100 %, then, when the ITT typical value for climb is reached, by indicated ITT, using this particular value. The margin between this indicated ITT and 790°C (recommended ITT limit during continuous operation) will gradually reduce as flight time is performed.”

    Hello Graham, first of all thank you very much for this marvellous video series. I'm enthusiast of TBM aircraft and this add-on is my only aircraft which I keep fly always. So I've build it up and DIY GMC710 Autopilot Box for this plane. This device has carried me one step ahaed. My question is : I have Saitek Logitech Yoke system with its throttle quadrant but could not be successfull of defining TBM's throtlle. My throttle' zero point is starting from end of the taxi zone. I can't do taxi or reverse. When I pull back it jump to low idle. How did you define taxi and reverse zone and what is your gear ?

      I have a simple desktop joystick with a single throttle axis - the flight idle point is about 30% of the lever movement and to get into the reverse range the toggle thrust reverse binding is on a button on the stick and that allows access to the lower part of the axis. I'm afraid I don't know about other hardware setups, but the HotStart Discord is very friendly and helpful - I'm sure somebody there will know.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you are enjoying the videos! So on the U.K. state chart, from the NATS website, it shows an OCA(OCH) of 376(161). That’s an obstacle clearance altitude(height) and doesn’t consider the system minima for a CAT 1 ILS of no lower than 200 above the runway. It’s how state charts should be done as the system minima my be varied by operator or other rules. FAA and commercial vendor charts show Minima, but we must convert the OCA to a Minima. As the OCH is 161 above the runway, we add 39 feet to get to the system minima, 376 + 39 = 415 rounded to the nearest 10 is 420.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Colin, I’m afraid I don’t know much about hardware optimisation - my PC is about 8 years old with a slightly newer GPU, and I have a 23” monitor. That said my instinct is an ultrawide monitor would very useful for visual flying where the extra field fo view would be very welcome. For Airliner flying I’m not so sure as keeping the panel and the view on screen together is much more important - I.e. more vertical aspect required. I see a lot of people with a separate screen mounted lower for the panel view, maybe this is an option? However as I said I don’t have any direct experience. You could try asking in the Hotstart Discord server? There is a hardware chat channel there and some very knowledgeable people.

      It's a great aeroplane. I only have a basic joystick with no advanced throttle and have found the TBM very easy to work with. It’s an “angle of attack” or alpha indicator. It measures the angle of the airflow at the wing and shows how close the wing is to stalling. A very useful device that every aircraft should have. There will be a short “extras” video about this after video 4 in a few weeks.

    The Emergency Electrical Tie switch on circuit breaker board should be properly modeled. But I can’t figure out how did it operate.....when main/standby gen stopped working, I should turn on that, so reserve more battery? Should I put source to off or leave it on battery? • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe this feature may not be quite correct in the current release. You should be able to leave the battery switch on and, I believe, the bus tie should leave the avionics in the same state as when you start up with just the crash bar up. The developer is looking into this, but for the time being look for the Main Gen and Low Voltage abnormal procedure (in the real TBM manual available online) and that explains using ESS BUS TIE. It's also covered in the Electrical section in the same manual. Be aware also that the documentation and the real aircraft behaviour can be very slightly different! Hope this helps.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wayne, sorry for the delay replying. On the FAA charts it's quite straightforward as you simply read the value from the chart. In the UK it obviously has to be more difficult! The state charts publish the obstacle clearance altitude rather than the minima, so for Aberdeen the Category B OCA for ILS Runway 34 is 376 feet, or a height of 161 feet. The difference between OCH (height) and OCA (altitude) is the threshold elevation, in this case 215 feet. However we need to know that a normal ILS approach has a system minima of 200ft - that means the lowest allowable decision height is 200 feet, so to get the decision altitude add 200 feet to the elevation of 215 = 415, rounded up to the nearest 10. If the OCH was greater than 200ft you would use that instead. So the approach minima is the higher of threshold elevation+system minima or OCA (which is of course the elevation+OCH). Hope that makes sense? The UK state charts are fairly poor in this regard, IRL a chart service like Jeppesen will provide the relevant minima to save you from having to do the calculation.
