      He was timing the swell, counting the sets, waiting for the right moment. He was very good.,the results speak for themselves

      They were thinking Horsepower was all they needed. 🤷‍♂️🙄 They got SUPER lucky that the first one spun them around. If it had left them still facing out there’s no way they had time for an about face before that next set wave took em out.

    It's cool to watch serious people focused on a difficult and dangerous job, working together without panicking and trusting each other. You can tell from their body language they're really focused on what's happening.

    Skills my friends. 80 ft vessel with an unskilled sailor could end up in a submerged vessel in these conditions. Knowledge the seas will keep you alive no matter what size boat you are navigating. Huge respect for that sailor!

    Just in case anyone is interested, that is a Arancia inshore lifeboat or IRB. They are incredibly capable soft hulled boats that are specifically designed for surf.
    To crew one of these you need to be a qualified beach lifeguard, and hold crew and coxswain quals and renew them bi annually.
    The fact that they are even sat in that boat meant that they knew exactly what they were doing.
    There are times that being on are bar is terrifying. The driver did the right thing.

    Wait for a break in the sets and go through a little white water, works like a charm. Ride back in on the back side of a wave. Whats really scary in a boat that size is cross seas.

    Quite possibly the first BP Rescue IRB that has actually showed a good piece of boat handling. Best way to cross a bar observe, analyse, observe again looking for repetition in the wave patterns then act accordingly.

    Not sure? These are SURF LIFEGUARDS. We are trained to rescue drowning people in the surf in these little red boats. They just didn’t want a sore arse. If they wanted they could have gotten past those waved in no time. Look up IRB SLS Races!

    Nice work boys, it was pumping out there! I beach launch my inflatable in sizable surf everyday and I know that feeling. No matter how many times you do it, you always have some butterflies. There’s consequences to any mistakes out there. Especially when you’re loaded down with expensive fishing gear, haha. Tight work!

    Ive done rescues at Muriwai in around 15ft those boats are perfect for big surf.You ca still pop around 6ft broken white water if driver and crew know how.

    Skied endless summer days off it so much fun.

    Just trying to use the engine power to muscle your way in or out never works. You have to read the waves. When crossing back in you should try to come in behind a wave allowing it to break and subside before it reforms smaller

    I fish out of Cook Inlet Alaska, with My 12ft inflatable, sometimes the rollers slapping the beach are higher than Your head and You definitely have to watch the undertow . Coming in has to be met with precision.
