That be a two cylinder ... Couple of rolls of exhaust wrap might reduce the burn risk. You do need to master the decompression levers or you'll reduce the life of engine. Grease the snot out of everything (should be a few grease nipples around). Check the air filter ... looks to be the oil bath kind and not everyone remembers to put oil in them!
You might want to add a citronella candle and a bottle of deet to the starting procedure 😱🤣

Yeah I don't know why I said one... when it clearly has two 😂

He seems clever to, an all round top lad. He should start a YT channel where he does intricately researched documentaries on obscure historical topics.

Thanks, Calum. It's nice to see old machines brought back to life and, before too long I imagine, put to work. Oh, and if you need new wheels take a look outside the pub next Saturday night - bound to be a Toyota or a Landrover or two. Cheers!

It's a twin cylinder engine..I can see the two heads at 7 35.

Ruby and Suby, great combination. Now all we need is a video about the Suby.

This was actually really interesting - not a vehicle I ever thought I'd find fascinating but really cleverly designed. Any chance of seeing the Subaru go for a rally around Raasay?

What a great machine in great condition! I learned to drive on one of these before I had a driving licence. Because of the long stick and sloppy gearbox, rather than grasping around to find it, I got in the very bad habit of driving along with left hand always on the gearstick, something that my driving instructor constantly told me off for later!
You will probably find you can take off in any gear because the engine revs very low without stalling, and it's also possible to crash the gears when moving without using the clutch. The second notch on the tipper lowers the lip, for easier loading with a shovel, just stand/jump on the back of the tipper body (or the handle) to lock it back once it's loaded. The stiff steering is probably down to the back wheels, the originals on these would have had very slim solid tyres with deep longitudinal grooves, to minimize the scrub, but even still quite heavy to steer when not moving. Bigger steering wheel may help. You are lucky with the seat because the original was likely just a pressed metal thing like an old fashioned tractor seat, not the most comfortable over bumps with no suspension!
Not sure if yours is the same but the brakes I recall were fully mechanical (no Hydraulics) with a manual adjuster 'gear' wheel (like a thumb wheel) that you have to poke/lever with a flat screwdriver though a slot on the back of the brake drum. As the brakes wear they need to be adjusted to maintain performance (ha ha what performance?) just wind them up until tight on and then back a notch or two, only takes a couple of minutes once you get the hang of it.

Hi. Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but in Canada they have these types of "temporary" wheels if you have a puncture. In the UK and most of Europe they give you a spare wheel to match your other 4. In Canada and I believe the US, cars are bought with a "doughnut" (name of wheel), in case of emergencies. A temporary measure to get you to the repair shop.

In the US. It depends on the car.

@@meegstomtomTrue, and besides most new cars these days in the USA dont come with any kind of spare at all! They just give you a little repair patching kit and a good luck chuck lol.

You can look up the manufacture date on the engine from the engine No, when starting just start one cylinder, the engine itself will start the other for you.

I just wonder, when you identified two compression valves, how can you say "it's one cylinder engine" :D

The SN started with 53, could that be the year of manufacture?
