Humpty is by far my favorite vehicle on the channel- it's more than proven its worth despite its size, condition, and cost. Personally, I would keep it yellow for a couple reasons-
    1. Liner did make them in yellow and in fact, it seems to have been more or less the standard color.
    2. It's become part of Humpty's character, especially on the channel.
    3. It just fits it so perfectly as a construction machine, and it makes a good companion for Viking.

    • @lmm

@@lmm pretty much every photo I've ever seen of one is yellow- It's possible Humpty was green from the factory though, and certainly it was that green color at some point. lots of farm and construction equipment manufacturers would let you pick custom colors if you asked for it.

I assembled these dumpers in the mid 60s. As a served my apprenticeship at the factory where they were built. They were built at the Liner concrete machinery company CO in Gateshead north east of England. The majority of these dumpers were painted red not yellow. Regarding the name plate on the back of the dumper they would have been inspected by Jd (Jimmy Davidson). Or Jk (Jimmy king). Hope this information helps.

    HUMPTY HYPEEEE!!
seriously, though I have no idea why Humpty was the thing that earned my subscription. about two years ago, when I first discovered the channel, despite all the far bigger and more interesting vehicles, a small corner of my brain went "I cannot possibly afford to miss seeing this guy patch up the bucket on his tiny dump truck", and as such I have watched the significant majority ever since. That's about 10% of my life. I'm almost sad at this point that the joke of forever waiting for the Humpty restoration video is going to end.
Also, I vote a fresh coat of yellow. Anything else would feel wrong at this point, and I personally think that yellow is just the proper color for any specialized utility vehicle other than a tractor, a lawnmower, or piece of farming equipment.

    That's fab!
The original design of the Petter PH/AV series actually harks back to the late 40s!
Today variants of the PH/AV series are built in India. They are in fact the most widely used small diesel engines in the country, for pumps and small generators etc!
In the search facility type in Kirloskar diesel engine or Vidhata diesel engine and you'll see what I mean! Doug

About 50 years ago, I remember local city council workers (in suburban Christchurch, New Zealand) would ride around the streets in machines that looked similar to this (quite likely a different brand, manufactured elsewhere). They sounded to my young ears, like a lawnmower vs a typical car, they may have been petrol or diesel, but likely only a 1 or 2 cylinder motor. The machine carried 2 operators, and they'd stop regularly, get off and use broom and shovel etc to clean out the roadside gutters, obviously putting the detritus into the forward bin. This obviously pre-dated the local councils owning any of those flash new trucks with power operated street-sweeping bristle brushes.

Humpty is a truly splendid vehicle. He appears to be rather more sophisticated than the very similar beastie that I spent a long-ago summer driving around a building site in Bristol. The labelled, interconnected pedals, and the 2-position bucket weren't present on "mine", which I'm fairly confident wasn't a Liner, although structurally/mechanically very similar. My memory also says it didn't have Humpty's rather sophisticated sprung-dog starting handle, making do with basic, fixed dogs for engagement. Maybe not, though. It was a long time ago, and memory is fickle.
Although physically quite large, I wouldn't think that refabbing the bucket would present any insurmountable problems. It looks to be almost all flat sheets (maybe some single curvature at the bottom) and folded lips and stiffeners. I suspect a couple of sheets of 3mm mild steel and some 40-50 x 3 angle, and a few hundred metres of MIG wire will see you right. I don't know how costs would stack up in the UK, but it might even be worth drawing it up in CAD and getting the bits laser/plasma cut, so you end up with a kit that just needs sticking together.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

You know what, that's probably a better way to go about it

@@lmm What can I say? I'm an engineer by training, always looking for the most efficient way to do stuff. Time is expensive, and cutting the parts is probably the most time consuming element of a job like Humpty's bucket, so it makes sense to contract it out to a machine, which can do a better job than a human could. Besides, I've always disliked the noise, mess and (since getting bitten by a 9" grinder a few years back) risk of cutting metal. Or the effort, if doing it manually.

I suggest converting to a wood flatbed with stake pockets. Wood for ease of fabrication and mods later. Flat or adding sides is more useful for dragging random stuff around. 4 sides for traditional yard of dirt. Maybe one side should be stronger and permanent to protect the pilot. Balance will be an issue, because the original bucket can't change shape that was never an issue. Make the flat plus one side first, and tack weld a mount to test balance. Then add other sides and see how balance when empty varies. Pick a compromise. Whatever the original colors were is best.

I know how solid the generator engine is but don't know much about the mixer engine, other than it sounds quite similar.

@@ZIGZAG12345 I have a Winget mixer with a Lister diesel, its abandoned on a piece of ground where it was last used, about a decade ago, but I mixed alot of mortar and concrete in it. Problem is the Belle mixers are much more manageable to transport and we have a big diesel (Yanmar) in the yard if needed, with working electric start. Have an old sawbench with a Lister as well but that needs selling as its no longer used.
When I was young Dad had two small dumpers like the Liner, one with a single lister, the other a twin Petter, which blew up, I doubt either survived.

I think if you are going to put the effort into fixing Humpty up may as well get him to look how he came out of the factory.
Seeing how Humpty was a limited production I would guess the steering gear and transmission are out of a car of the same or older vintage.
That drive axle looks like a Dana 27 or a Dana-Salisbury 27 axle that's been flipped upside down. That would make sense to reverse ring gear to the pinion gear to get your three forward gears and not three reverse gears with standard engine rotation.

    • @lmm

Yeah, it's certainly just been reversed

Hi I have a liner roughrider 23cwt and I would like to know if the rear rims are compatible to other vehicles. Recently I bought the Hillman 15 inch rims but they are narrower than mine. Thanks and well done for such videos
