Chinese Mythology has a bird-shaped creature called "鳳凰 Fenghuang" which is fire-related(some maybe fire bending), but they don't revive from fire.
Also, like Dragon(龍), 鳳凰 doesn't be restricted to a certain gender. They both are very high-class spirits.
In Chinese history, only nobles or the royal family members can equip the emblem of a 龍 or a 鳳凰.

VIto, I’m a Chinese, and i can tell you, what you are saying about Chinese cinema and audience are very very correct, and you said it in the nicest way possible. As a filmmaker myself, china doesn’t really care about film anymore, the audience goes in to the theatre just want to see something they don’t see in their real life. Tiktok is taking over the media in china anyway, and there are no sign of that trend slowing down. Keep up the good work buddy! Love your content :)

I have Chinese friends and I took them to watch Jungle book adaptation, which arguably is the best remake the Mouse did. Then we went to Chinese Wall movie and they absolutely loved. The poorly written movie where the freaking marching scene takes god damn 5 minutes.

Chinese Canadian here, and no, the phoenix makes no sense. FYI the witch is played by a famous Chinese actress, that's most likely why the character was even inserted into the movie in the first place.. Obviously to appeal to the Chinese demographic. The majority of Chinese audience don't really care about characters or plot. What they want are famous celebrities and spectacle.
If that's true, that's a sad mindset. Or, at least, a very disappointing one.

The phoenix represented here is indeed one of the worst aspects of the movie because it represented a Western Phoenix and tried to pass it as the Chinese Phoenix (the idea of it burning and resurrecting from the ashes is the Western Phoenix).
The Chinese Phoenix is an extremely holy and respected mythological creature that represents the very essence of Chinese values (eg: High Virtue, Grace, and the union of Yin and Yang). It's various body parts and even its colors all hold significant and deep meanings. It was even used to signify a new era or the approval of the next Emperor of China.
So no, Mulan 2020's phoenix is not even the Chinese Phoenix so the answer to your question (6:53) is... It ain't the Chinese Phoenix and I have no clue why its in there. I can tell you though, those who are superstitious or respect Chinese culture will find this insulting.

Funny thing about the grandma-sister switcheroo, that is to keep tradition.
Mulan being great in this movie is a exception to the rule instead of being an icon of girls being as capable as boys. The sister wasnt born with mystical, bullshit chi, so she gets to be married off while Mulan gets to be a soldier....instead of getting offered a position among the emperor's advisors or being her personal advisor.
I think this gotcha thing is pretty overblown, it was fun in TLJ, but that was a spontaneous action and shouldnt be replicated too often before it becomes lame.

If you made a GOTCHA of The Last Airbender, that would literally be the best thing ever. And no, I'm not gonna specifiy whether it's the movie or the cartoon, because you already know the answer.
The sad thing is it isn't even edgier than the cartoon. I *felt* something when we saw the dead camp and their captain was promoted to general because of his father's passing in the animation. They got us to *care* about the characters first, which meant we then consequently *cared* when bad things happened to them afterwards.
When that witch dies, are we supposed to care? Why?

As a Chinese-Canadian who was really looking forward to a more realistic take on the Mulan story situated within the Wu-Xia genre makes a lot of sense! HOWEVER, I agree with most of your points Vito. The thing is though - cutting Mushu and Cricket the way they did was something I agree with. The respect towards Dragons makes a lot of sense because Dragons are indeed a sign of auspiciousness in Chinese culture, so the Eddie Murphy dragon if represented in live action in the comedic way that he was represented would've been disrespectful or at least inappropriate. There's much more I can say - however just needed to clarify this bit about the dragon you made. In fact - the Chinese people are otherwise referred to as descendants of the Dragon, so dragons are to be respected much more than they are treated than European Dragons. European Dragons are considered signs of bad luck whilst Eastern Dragons are considered signs of good luck.

i'm torn on this video.. one one hand it's perfect.. and using the "Gotcha" moment from the TLJ review is a smart way to spinoff a series of videos. But a part of me feels that the original segment - and the fact that it was so spontaneous, and perfect and just flowed naturally FROM the review at the time - will never be equaled.. will knowing that the video will have the "Gotcha"s in advance make it funny? Yes, just not AS funny. It's the same reason why Plinkett cans till be funny while doing the same schtick every time.. and why Jeremy is still funny.. oh wait, he is rarely funny anyway .. Well, Vito.. it's a great idea for a series. As a Patron supporter.. I approve

Now, he knows that everyone pulls that segment.. and watches it on it's own... and he uses the same voice.. but it's not quite as organic. That said.. this is an AWESOME video... and am glad Vito found his own unique take on reviewing films
The first 'Gotcha' series I watched was from the Rise of Skywalker. Granted, it was my first experience of it, so I found it hilarious and unequaled. ;) New viewers strolling in all the time, so it's great either way. I personally love this segment and want him to do it many times over.
It feels like Disney got mad at how people hated the original, so they took all of the hated stuff out as revenge.

All or nothing, huh?
Yes, I know that in the US military, there are rules to prevent officers from dating enlisted personnel, but this story is not the US military.
And the funny thing is, if I recall, he didn't court her or even fall in love with her until after she went back home. For most of the movie he thought she was someone else, then nearly executed her when he learned the truth, then helped in the plan to save the emperor. At what point when she was enlisted did he show he was falling in love prior to the end?

Just because you reminded me of Mulan soundtrack, I decided to go and listen to the OST from 1998. And boy, what a magnificent work it is. I remembered all the feelings I had from it when I was a kid. And I remember being inspired by the character of Mulan, because she was a strong and determened person and had great personality. I don't feel anything when I'm looking at this expressionless Chinese robot they have for the main character.

chinese person here: the phoenix... is the “other” dragon. both fictional creatures are the yin and yang of eachother, kind of reflecting a marriage. it is kind of ironic here then that they use a phoenix to symbolize her spirit cuz the entire length of this movie she does nothing but try to imitate a dragon.
oh one more thing- i’m chinese but not from china- i don’t know what the chinese test audience was on about with the kissing scene cuz we did kiss during mulan’s time period. maybe it’s some kind of conservative cultural revolution bullshit but whatever the reason that test audience was stupid and they don’t speak for the rest of the billions of us
