Man I hate when TH-cam always has to change TH-camrs videos because it always has to deal with violence, cussing, and real world tragedy. Okay maybe not all of that but you get it. DC's glory days were in the DCAU era (1992-2006). Nothing will ever beat the animated universe's layered story-telling, perfect casting choices, and not being afraid to tackle dark, even taboo subjects, and that's *without* taking nostalgia into account.
Batman has, quite simply, one obvious motivation. Bruce, to the best of his ability, wants to make Gotham a safe place for kids so that no child has to ever experience what he did. That's it. I've only been reading Batman for six decades, I'm retyping what has been said a zillion times. Leave out the fake morality, please.
Its funny that people who wrote Justice League on cartoonnetwerok knew this and had batman become a part timer on the show rather than a full time member because Batman was busy in gotham

I think what killed the DCEU isn't necessarily Zack Snyder per se, but the fact that they jumped the gun, they wanted an Avengers-level film as a second entry into the universe.
not really Zack’s fault nor is it because it was JL he 5th film in the DCEU, considering that they had their own DC universe already with the JL united without any build up and people did not complain.

Justice League’ from the DCAU .. (cause we just won’t even talk about the one from the DCEU) was filled with GREAT storylines and the show was actually deep. Even had some mentions of politics. I honestly think we had it too good at that time with television. The DCAU is golden.

Ultimately it was Warner brothers trying to go in a different direction to contrast The MCU which in turn killed the core of the character of Superman and batman.

@Jakeyjakey there are some really dumb decisions that snyder made with b v s. His vision of lex luthor was one of them. Plus Lex knew both secret identities of batman and superman and in the extended cut knew of the supermans inability to see through lead.

I thought man of steel was good. BvS while it had good moments, the bad ones really stuck out the most, showing it was obviously rushed out to compete with marvel, Suicide Squad was abysmal, Wonder Woman was fine, and Justice League is a Frankenstein’s monster of a film.
I personally don’t think the DC characters are enjoyed on screen as much as Marvel, other than Batman. He’s really the only character who’s had several good stand alone movies before the Avengers style team up. Marvel characters all had successful individual movies where fans got invested first. Those that didn’t benefited from playing off the ones that had already. So maybe DC rushed their ideas a bit. Also DC has leaned to the darker, more serious gritty takes. Where Marvel’s been lighthearted comic relief that didn’t take itself too serious. Maybe that plays better when ya have a bunch of ppl in costumes on screen together. Not taking itself too serious may be a plus. Even Boys which can be vulgar and darker at times doesn’t really take itself serious like DC
That is a good point to make. These past DC movies have had the worst screenplays possible, because they didn't have an identity. Oh, we are super gritty. Oh, now we throw in jokes. Our heroes are murderers or not the least bit relatable. They are also awfully edited, like, wow!
It kinda also shows how more popular (or at the very least archetypical) DC is then Marvel. You screw up a Marvel movie, nobody panics ; you screw up a DC movie and everyone loses their minds
It's the same old story over and over again, in movies and gaming. Make a plan, get the right people for it, execute, and hey, maybe have a backup plan so you don't have to scramble and Rian Johnson yourself. DC just jumped in thinking they couldn't lose, and that's basically doom.
@Thanos 6.0 true. But they also had an foundation and catalog going for them by hitting on their first few films and setting a tone. Even Iron Man had the perfect balance of humor and cynicism, IMO. As a casual fan I remember watching the first few Marvel films and enjoying them while not even knowing that an Avengers team up was in the future plans. It took time, time that I kinda feel like DC didn’t spend. They instead wanted to success of the team up while not investing the time setting it up that marvel did.

one huge problem of the dceu is the fact their second movie was batman v superman, it took marvel 8 YEARS to build up iron man vs cap through many movies like avengers and many solo movies, they rushed to it, no that’s not how it works, you need to build up the characters they didn’t atleast introduce batman in ONE movie prior. especially with justice league, could you imagine how badly the mcu failed if they made iron man, then right after civil war, then avengers right after with NO build up? it would be horrible
Agreed with most of your points. One problem: Most living creatures have a progenitor (or "parent"), but even if Superman didn't, I don't see why him asking Batman to save his "mom" would resonate given the silly "1% chance of a threat" logic Batman uses. The real problem is crappy dialog/inability of the characters to communicate with each other on any level.
I think Whedon gets way too much flak for his cut of the Justice League. Every director brings their own style to a project. If you fire Jackson Pollock halfway through a painting don't expect Norman Rockwell to finish what Jackson started then call it a Jackson Pollock painting when it's done. Also, WB execs put a major amount of restrictions and expectations onto this movie so Whedon was destined to fail. He did the best with what he was given and asked to do but the real failure was giving complete control of the entirety of the DCEU to Snyder in the first place. I imagine the powers-that-be saw Watchmen and 300 and just hired Snyder. There didn't seem to be any planning. They gave Snyder a blank check, let him do whatever he wanted and just assumed all the pieces would fall into place and whatever Snyder came up with could be a repeatable formula. Make a movie about a superhero, drain all the color, throw in some slow-mo and boom, it looks like the same creative talent was behind all of it. It's kind of a shame the comic book movie wars are so one-sided. Not that Marvel hasn't churned out some amazing films but I can't help but think that we might've gotten even better movies if Marvel felt like they had some actual competition. Instead they can release a lukewarm film like the Eternals and still hold their head high that the MCU is still an insanely popular and lucrative franchise of movies and easily the biggest thing to happen in cinema since the first Star Wars and the first Matrix movie.
@@dignerds 2 objectively great film makers…you’re entitled to your opinion I guess, but I have to strongly disagree with your second statement. Being a great film maker doesn’t simply mean you will definitively be great in all forms and genres of film.
The major problem is that DCEU didn't flesh out characters before the JL movie. It felt rushed. The 90's DC cartoons did a much better at building up the Justice League.
It didn't do that because it was meant to be a Superman saga with other DC characters as supporting characters around Superman. Superman was meant to be the main character, but then WB got creedy and ordered changes.
I would strongly recommend to everyone Superman: Man of Tomorrow for an example of how to handle Superman and his supporting cast of characters well. Also Lobo is in it and that's always fun.
I know this is my opinion This is mine: I disliked the movie... the story was delivered poorly... I did not like their Superman... note that I’ve been a Superman fan my whole life and have enjoyed virtually every take on the character... except this one🙃

It all went bad when they decided to kill Jonathan Kent in a way that gave Clark a serious case of PTSD. He's been brooding ever since. BvS he goes to the mountains and talks to imaginary Jonathan. He tells Clark a story about watching horses drown and hearing their cries in his dreams. Clark asks if the dreams ever stop, alluding to the fact he's having his own traumatic dreams. PTSD.
Just look at Ezra Miller run. Of all the stupid decisions in the DC movies, why would you cast an actor as The Flash who runs like he has cerebral palsy?

One thing I want to point out on the topic of Lex Luthor somehow magically knowing Superman's identity in BVS, is that it's more of a fault on the Man of Steel film. In Man of Steel, Lois was able to easily track down Superman, his mother and his mother's farm in Smallville with the resources she had, making it seem pretty easy for anyone to discover his identity if they really wanted to know, especially if they have the resources available.
Unpopular opinion: I thought Man of Steel was a pretty good super hero movie in comparison to half of marvels stuff, but mostly because of the action scenes

Studios have a habit of giving Snyder too much control, let’s just say there’s a reason why barely anybody knows James Gunn wrote Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead remake because Snyder took every joke Gunn wrote into the film and either threw it out or turned the jokes into downer and depressing scenes with zero humour
Yep, Snyder pretty much took Gunn’s script and either ripped out the jokes or recontextualised them into serious scenes. For example Gunn wrote a scene where some of the characters walk around a video store and comically point out the pictures and items with the most annoying celebrities they could find and start talking about how thankful they were for those celebrities to be dead, Snyder saw that and changed it into the scene where the guy in a very downer and pessimistic way says everybody they ever knew in their life was dead

@Greg Elchert they weren't looking for "bible" character, but a "he-man" type. There's so many, and they couldn't decide which one to use. So they used ALL of them. This type of character is a "divine (or holy) ubermensch", meaning they've god like power. The two main traits they wanted were strength & an "outsider" background. They both talk about it a lot in various places. The facts that they both were immigrants and that one of them lost his father to a still unsolved murder are the seed & roots of Superman.

I think what killed the DCEU isn't necessarily Zack Snyder per se, but the fact that they jumped the gun, they wanted an Avengers-level film as a second entry into the universe.

There's multiple iterations of Lex Luthor. The BvS version of Lex was Inspired by Superman: Birthright.
They almost even look similar.

I thought man of steel was good. BvS while it had good moments, the bad ones really stuck out the most, showing it was obviously rushed out to compete with marvel, Suicide Squad was abysmal, Wonder Woman was fine, and Justice League is a Frankenstein’s monster of a film.
I personally don’t think the DC characters are enjoyed on screen as much as Marvel, other than Batman. He’s really the only character who’s had several good stand alone movies before the Avengers style team up. Marvel characters all had successful individual movies where fans got invested first. Those that didn’t benefited from playing off the ones that had already. So maybe DC rushed their ideas a bit. Also DC has leaned to the darker, more serious gritty takes. Where Marvel’s been lighthearted comic relief that didn’t take itself too serious. Maybe that plays better when ya have a bunch of ppl in costumes on screen together. Not taking itself too serious may be a plus. Even Boys which can be vulgar and darker at times doesn’t really take itself serious like DC
That is a good point to make. These past DC movies have had the worst screenplays possible, because they didn't have an identity. Oh, we are super gritty. Oh, now we throw in jokes. Our heroes are murderers or not the least bit relatable. They are also awfully edited, like, wow!
It kinda also shows how more popular (or at the very least archetypical) DC is then Marvel. You screw up a Marvel movie, nobody panics ; you screw up a DC movie and everyone loses their minds
It's the same old story over and over again, in movies and gaming. Make a plan, get the right people for it, execute, and hey, maybe have a backup plan so you don't have to scramble and Rian Johnson yourself. DC just jumped in thinking they couldn't lose, and that's basically doom.

one huge problem of the dceu is the fact their second movie was batman v superman, it took marvel 8 YEARS to build up iron man vs cap through many movies like avengers and many solo movies, they rushed to it, no that’s not how it works, you need to build up the characters they didn’t atleast introduce batman in ONE movie prior. especially with justice league, could you imagine how badly the mcu failed if they made iron man, then right after civil war, then avengers right after with NO build up? it would be horrible

Agreed with most of your points. One problem: Most living creatures have a progenitor (or "parent"), but even if Superman didn't, I don't see why him asking Batman to save his "mom" would resonate given the silly "1% chance of a threat" logic Batman uses. The real problem is crappy dialog/inability of the characters to communicate with each other on any level.
I think Whedon gets way too much flak for his cut of the Justice League. Every director brings their own style to a project. If you fire Jackson Pollock halfway through a painting don't expect Norman Rockwell to finish what Jackson started then call it a Jackson Pollock painting when it's done.
Also, WB execs put a major amount of restrictions and expectations onto this movie so Whedon was destined to fail. He did the best with what he was given and asked to do but the real failure was giving complete control of the entirety of the DCEU to Snyder in the first place. I imagine the powers-that-be saw Watchmen and 300 and just hired Snyder. There didn't seem to be any planning. They gave Snyder a blank check, let him do whatever he wanted and just assumed all the pieces would fall into place and whatever Snyder came up with could be a repeatable formula. Make a movie about a superhero, drain all the color, throw in some slow-mo and boom, it looks like the same creative talent was behind all of it.
It's kind of a shame the comic book movie wars are so one-sided. Not that Marvel hasn't churned out some amazing films but I can't help but think that we might've gotten even better movies if Marvel felt like they had some actual competition. Instead they can release a lukewarm film like the Eternals and still hold their head high that the MCU is still an insanely popular and lucrative franchise of movies and easily the biggest thing to happen in cinema since the first Star Wars and the first Matrix movie.
The Quentin Tarantino and Zack Snyder comparison was absolutely perfect.

I would strongly recommend to everyone Superman: Man of Tomorrow for an example of how to handle Superman and his supporting cast of characters well. Also Lobo is in it and that's always fun.

One thing I want to point out on the topic of Lex Luthor somehow magically knowing Superman's identity in BVS, is that it's more of a fault on the Man of Steel film. In Man of Steel, Lois was able to easily track down Superman, his mother and his mother's farm in Smallville with the resources she had, making it seem pretty easy for anyone to discover his identity if they really wanted to know, especially if they have the resources available.

Yep, Snyder pretty much took Gunn’s script and either ripped out the jokes or recontextualised them into serious scenes. For example Gunn wrote a scene where some of the characters walk around a video store and comically point out the pictures and items with the most annoying celebrities they could find and start talking about how thankful they were for those celebrities to be dead, Snyder saw that and changed it into the scene where the guy in a very downer and pessimistic way says everybody they ever knew in their life was dead

It was a perfect adaptation from the comics while being completely its own thing! Snyder was the worst person to helm this universe. Why didn’t they get Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) or Chris Columbus (Harry Potter) to do this?! You think that would be a no brainer.

Yes Snyder is an edgelord and is overly gratuitous with his dark visions but that quote is being taken out of context, the context was that if Snyder was do make Nolan's Batman movies and Watchmen-ize it, that's the level of dark we'd get.
