As of 2019, Steam is no longer supported on Windows XP. Here’s how to make it work. (Works on XP x86 and x64 along with Vista x86 and x64)

Note: starting approximately 6 June 2020 some people have reported problems. I have tried, but i cannot replicate this. There are reports from others that it is still working, and some were able to fix it by installing a new copy to a new folder.
I'm posting this on the 19th January of 2020 to confirm that this method still works as of today
@@snakwastaken what kind of hotspot? If you mean WiFi: it's possible just look for the WLAN settings.
Does it still update the servers in terms of what's available in the store and game updates? Or is it stuck back in 2018 with what games are up on the store and such

I just bought Black Mesa, and rather than run on my Core 2 duo laptop with shite integrated graphics that has windows 10, I'd rather run on my Vista machine with i3 and a 2 gb graphics card, but was bummed when I discovered all this. Fingers crossed I can install and run it!

Thank you so much!!! I find it extremely scummy of Valve to not let us download and use older versions normally without workarounds like that essentially forbidding me to play Half-Life etc. on my old laptop on which it still runs perfectly.
They should have at least made a legacy branch of steam that only gets absolutely critical updates

It should be illegal to make old steam versions stop working but at least steam isnt actively trying to stop this.

So clicking on steam causes my xp computer to blue screen... This is a fresh install of xp as well. Any suggestions?
Sounds like you have a larger problem... I've never experienced this. whats the stop code?

@@HazewinDog Honestly it is about 50/50 chance if it works. Sometimes it boots and steam starts automatically. But I can't start steam with the shortcut or I blue screen.

As of December 20, 2019, this still works. But the browser was initially disabled, because apparently my Xeon X5670 doesn't support SSE2.
The only workaround I could find was to change a setting in Steam that would issue a prompt to restart it, like enabling/disabling GPU acceleration in the browser. Once restarted, the browser would appear. I have to do this every time I start a new Steam session.
For reference, this was in Vista SP2 x64.

Mostly likely an irrelevant comment: But as I watch this video and use my eyes to scan around the classic WinXP interface, I begin to get a nostalgic rush from 15-19 years ago. Oh how it felt like yesterday. As the future presses on, I've been missing my youth lately. My present is great actually, fantastic. There's just those times in the past I would like to relive again, the world was (to a degree) different back then.

Is this a version that *does not* have that glitch that makes it impossible to download mods from Steam Workshop?
Cause I really need my Skyrim mods downloaded there.

Also, what I found is that the game "Cities: Skylines" is listed in the Steam store as supporting XP x64, but in reality it became impossible to launch it through Steam on the OS starting sometime in 2017.
Turns out it needs to be cracked to run! DRM always giving us NT5 users the short-stick. :/ And that game in Vista/7+ is a glitchy mess with my Quadro FX 3800, whereas it's playable in XP. And such a RAM-heavy game combined with the super-lite XP is such a great combination. Only the newer Windows Server releases and Debian/Q4OS/etc. come close to XP x64's RAM consumption.
Using windows vista, when I click install game it installs fine, but when clicking play nothing happens.
Also comes up with "gldrivequery.exe has stopped working" when starting steam, but steam still seems to work, just the games not playing. :(
I've tried moving the steam folder to documents, moving config.vdf to the config folder, unblocking steam, restarting, uninstalling and re-installing the game, deleting vc redist package (because there was a microsoft vc redist error earlier). Any tips?
For some reason I can log in and have to verify but after that Steam doesn't load it just says it's connecting to the acoount

The 2014 build linked in the reviews here: archive.org/details/steam_201901 Is still able to log in but not download games (content servers unreachable). Maybe somebody could figure it out.
probably because you're on 32-bit and The pc in video is 64-bit. The STEAM BROWSER which is used to browse through games in the server can't work on 32-bit.
Instead of using the WIN XP I tried to use linux it didn't work cause I'm in 32-bit.
I'm still able to login but not browse.
Does not connect. The only way I can play games on Windows XP is if I pirate them.
Mine can't connect. I get a connection error, and after I hit retry several times it gets stuck in connection. Then it needs to be closed from the processes in the task manager.

@@Everette997 I have watched and did everything he said in the video and I've even deleted the newer steam client folder in favor for this old one but I did noticed that the client stopped working for some people but still worked some people including me so it's really been hit or miss since June. Even restarting the old steam client by ending process via task manager helped me so I'm not sure what to say really : / hopefully there are other ways you can get to work and buying games on GOG has been great too for XP :)

I do not believe this works anymore as when I tried to download a game I had previously purchased it gave me an error which said "content servers unreachable"
I am just stuck at the client saying only nothing but "Connecting to Steam account..." And nothing is happening. I am running this on 32 bit Core 2 Duo processor laptop. OP I would like to know how this is fixed since I do have games I'd love to play on XP that work on XP.

Mind you I also have a further problem with Steam that is I just bought a used copy of Skyrim off Ebay and even if I could get XP 64 Bit to run Steam I still can't play Skyrim because the activation code is permanently linked to the original owner and can't be deactivated for someone else to use. This must explain why CEX hardly has any used PC games after around 2008.

For me, Steam works fine. But I keep getting computer errors when I try to open any games I have downloaded resulting in me not being able to play any game. I'm on Vista and the error message is " 'game' has stopped working "
hmmm put it in my program files folder (never put it in their before) I launch and i sign in then i get the connecting bug i kill process then start program and now its stuck on updating steam infomation

(Vista) Steam works when i run it, but when i run a game, it is a white screen, then a black screen. Can you help me?
Few things:
- Still suprised that people use XP
- Your internet download speeds are ~80-90kb/s slower than mine
- If your internet's slow then how tf you upload 1080p vids and how long does it take it to.
-Yes I'm a daily XP user here
-My internet speeds up late at night, so I uploaded the video then... the video was 358mb and took about an hour, not so bad for me.
-and i could have theoretically uploaded this in dial up, nothing says that slow internet prevents you from doing things... they just happen slower lol

As of 2022 it semi works but you can’t download games
I can sign in, Steam is running as a process but no client shows up.
Basically get a new pc sorry idk why im writing this i have same issue and no fix :(

July 2020. Doesn't work just now in a new installation (it worked in my previous system some months ago). It let me log in but then the client never appears. With ctrl+alt+supr you can see the steam client executed in memory but you can't see the icon in the bar and the client where see the games opened neither... I guess that Steam finally blocked this way...

I got it to work, but when I try to login with another steam account nothing shows up and I have to force close steam with Task manager.
Can this get you a VAC ban if you try to play games like _CS:GO_ or _Team Fortress 2_ ?
I don't play those games nor do i know about their xp/vista compatibility, but I can't imagine why it would.
However this claim comes with no express or implied warranty or guarantee.

did you first run the certificate installer and then start proxhttpsproxy_pswitch?

do i have to open the config in a specific program? and what happens after you see the boot strapper? do we just delete it? i can't delete it.
It's almost working in 2024... I'm so close! I can get all the way to entering the authenticator code from steam guard.
Steam for XP and Vista is useless in the year 2024 anyway. You can log in after updating root certificates, but game downloading no longer works. The workaround for a while was too copy games over from a modern computer to the steam folder eo you could at least launch games and play, but in some instances that won't work anymore.
Now you can get the latest steam to work on Windows XP with One Core API (Windows XP Extended Kernel) it is unstable on real hardware, though.
Is it possible to make it stable on real hardware?
@@Paolo_SHN._6._7 I mean that the extended kernel is unstable on real hardware because it is in active development and still in an alpha / beta stage. But if you install the extended kernel, you can run all sorts of programs like the latest Steam build.
The extended kernel essentially adds more compatibility layers to Windows XP. They even potted DirectX 11 or 12 I can't remember which one.

Also you can just pirate games, as most archival game sites usually have most older games like pre 2009 etc, yeah yeah piracy is bad but hey at least it works and you get a crack with it so you wont have to open Steam everytime, its just a future proofing thing.
if you are using Vista dont copy it to program files. Just run it from the steam folder on your desktop (or wherever you unzip it to). Didnt need the config.vdf file at all.

From what im understanding is that if i cant connect to my steam account it means valve took off the servers for windows xp and vista which may mean that people that already have steam connected can login in easy it just if you do a clean install of xp or vista it wont work.
Not sure if it's just me, this December 2018 build of steam does not seem to work anymore on my Windows Vista Business x64 VM even after a re-installation. It was stuck on a modal with "connecting to server" infinitely before uninstalling, but now it simply refuses to show up anything despite executable and service is running on the background.
For XP there's a VM with only 10GB of disk space on my 2015 Macbook Air so I cannot test this...
When it came to final step, I clicked ProxHTTPSProxy_PSwitch.exe and nothing appear on vista 32 bit. May I know any solution?
When i try to launch automatically updates and then it gives the message not supported on vista, what do i do ?

Well, I'd certainly assume valve included them for a reason.
Hi can anyone help, I am no computer person and I have dug out and old Dell Vostro 200 running vista, have followed all the steps, all the relevant files are downloaded, I have added the config.vdf to config file as suggested and I can't get any of the files with the steam logo to load which one is the application? Have I missed a step?

In my own opinion, yes. YMMV
I'd recommend:
-Using an updated browser for general internet access. (Like New Moon or Serpent, available on MSFN or through my installer, i430vx.strangled.net/files/XP/RoyTam%20Browser%20Installer.exe)
-Using a real time antivirus, like Avast, or at least something like clamwin and regular manual scans
-Don't visit shady sites or run shady programs, this should always be followed, not just on old PCs
-Use a firewall. XP has a built in one that's alright, most routers have one built in too
Also, thats a decent video tutorial idea, securing windows xp

it occurred to me: could i use this method and then just transfer games directly to the hard drive from a machine that does work (win10 machine) and then run them in this client??

Unfortunately I'm getting an error message after typing in password to logon - "Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers." :( I haven't used the Proxy thing for the icons because I don't need them but maybe it doesn't work without it any more?!

Windows XP on a Windows 7 PC
Does anyone know if this works on Windows 2000? XP is a bit too bloated for my setup, but it can run games up until maybe around 2003-2004 or so, so I want to play them on appropriate hardware.
EDIT: Got around to trying it. Says Steam wasn't a valid Win32 application. Shame lol
