    2 amazing things in this video (BTW very well filmed) ...
    first is I got the number for Penvose Farm Holidays, and second
    is that there was a heat haze in Cornwall. I didn't believe that was possible.

    After an air day there in the 60s we were in a traffic jam at the end of the runway there when an English Electric Lightning came down the runway rotated almost vertical, switched on the afterburners and disappeared. The sight and the noise was one of the most awesome aviation experiences I had.

    Interesting to learn that Newquay Airport is the old St mawgan. I did part of my National Service at nearby St Merryn.
    Was told that St.Mawgan had the longest runway in Britain and was an ideal landing place for American planes crossing the Atlantic. We used the runway for marshalling aircraft flying off passing Aircraft Carriers.
    My next posting was to RNAS Eglington which is now Londonerry City Airport.

    RAF St Mawgan started out in in 1939 as a couple of Nissan Huts down in the far south west corner of one of its fields, TREBELSUE FARM (TR8 4AN), and grew into one of the largest airfields in the UK. Like Arthur Compton, it has always been of interest to me (a Newquay boy) also having ties. My Mother was a WAAF stationed there at St Mawgan. My Father trained as a Lancaster Rear end Gunner at nearby St Eval and met my Mother in 1942 at a dance organised on the St Mawgan Camp by the RAF staff. Over the years, many Newquay people relied on employment at the drome with constant Airforce personnel from around the World mainly Yanks, all remember this special place .

    I lived within sight of RAF St. Mawgan for 20 years yet initially I dint recognise the place from the video. It looks like the clay tips are just up the road from St. Columb, which they really are. Kernow/Cornwall must really be a tiny little land mass. Newquay to Penzance used to be a day out- now even though my state is the same size as Cornwall that distance is 1/2 an hour jaunt to nearest big town.

    • @551moley
      @551moley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in Whitemoor right next to the tips, the biggest change over the years is that most of the "Clay Alps" have now grown over and changed to green and brown, I worked at St Mawgan for over 10 years the change is quite dramatic.

      @@551moley I haven’t lived there for 31 years and I last visited in 2005. Through the news, family, and GoogleEarth, it’s definitely not the same place anymore. After 100 generations it’s more or less a theme park- unless my American wife expresses a want to live there I don’t think I will ever return. Kernow was my first, biggest, and longest love. I don’t know any more. Not so funny thing- when I was there, there was definitely a feeling of, as a local, I was a second class citizen. Now I live in Rhode Island, a holiday destination, Bowing and scraping for out-of-state dollars, homes being snapped up by out-of-staters- now, as a local, there is definitely a feeling of being a second class citizen.

I moved to Cornwall in the late 80's age 10 and managed to get stationed at St Mawgan for over 10 years in the 90's and early 2000's, I've stayed/ worked in a few parts of the UK but only ever lived in Cornwall.

    Nice to see 'Good ol' RAF St. Mawgan' getting some air time. Had a few jollies out of there in the 70's. Chipmunk, Nimrod and Canberra. Lot to be said for being an ATC cadet.

      There was a 24 hour patrol of Typhoons and possibly F15's just off of the coast at 30,000 feet for the whole three days. You could see them, plus a tanker and an AWACs just going round in hundreds of large circles.

      Air Force one is only ever flown by a special handpicked detachment of the USAF, though there is a RAF pilot on attachment with them at the moment.

    Wonderful to see 'Angel 2', being used as Air Force One.
    To those whom don't know. There are two Angel 747's, 'Angel 1 & Angel 2', numbers, 28000 & 29000. Air force one is an 'Air Traffic control callsign', only used when the US president is on board. It isn't a specific aeroplane. The US president could board a E223 'Doomsday aeroplane', and use that as AF1.
    Beautiful aeroplane. Safe journey back home Joe.
